Adult stocking filler ideas - all year round!

If you're anti Christmas until December or don't agree with stockings for adults, please scroll past.

Our adult children absolutely refuse not to have Christmas stockings, it wouldn't be Christmas without them apparently. Their main present is either something they've asked for or cash. I try to get a couple of other small gifts I know they'd like as a surprise but stockings are here to stay.
I know people have different approaches to stocking fillers, here are the criteria for ours:

Small enough to fit in a stocking (shop bought type not a sock).
Anywhere from 0 - £5 per gift (£0 could be a perfume/aftershave sample)
Must be practical, fun or consumable to avoid wastage.
Can be pre-owned (eg like-new books from a charity shop).
Usual ideas are foodstuffs, snacks, toiletries, DIY bits n bobs, stationery items. All get used but a bit dull, another reason for not leaving it too late to think of things.

I keep a 'Christmas note' on my phone and note ideas all year round. Generally I won't buy until later in the year, it's the ideas that are difficult. I sometimes pick up on things in conversation and add to the note to buy later (eg DS1's girlfriend mentioned how much she loved a certain chocolate bar - now in the list).
Obviously if I spot something that I probably wouldn't be able to get again - something unique or a real bargain, I will buy when I see them but don't go actively looking. Sometimes they are things I stumble across (I recently bought a trolley coin in aid of a charity one of my DCs supports when there was a stall in a service station).

Just been ordering a couple of slimline European usb adapters to take on holiday (see pic) and have ordered a few extra as stocking fillers. Which is what prompted me to start this thread. By starting early, collecting ideas even if not buying, I think you do so with a clearer mind and end up with better stocking fillers than leaving the thinking til December when there is so much else going on.
Not sure if anyone else will be interested in this thread but just in case, would be good to share ideas or things that you've seen that are not the usual everyday items.
I'd appreciate it we could keep this thread for adults stockings only please

I can't paste a pic, sorry.
A backpack/rucksack that folds into a little bag that will fit into the palm of your hand.
E bay and Amazon have them at £4.95, but for just a little more you can but something more luxurious.

I saw it mentioned somewhere on here recently about a pickle spoon - I’d like one for spooning pickle onions/baby beetroot out. It’s a spoon with holes in it. Random I know!

Ooft yes. I'd love this. Throw in some jars of pickled things.

Love chutneys as well. A few little jars of that would make my Christmas.

This is the best thing I’ve ever read!

@Jimmyneutronsforehead snap! What an amazing idea!

gardenmusic · 27/05/2024 20:19

I think it is called an olive spoon?

Johaanah · 27/05/2024 20:56

Primark currently have Cashmere socks for £5 a pair. Not pure cashmere but nice and soft, I’ve picked up a few pairs as stocking fillers for both of my sons gf’s.

Waterproof poncho. Trespass has free postage at the moment, and has a decent reuseable one at £5.99.
You can buy the dustbin bag type for around £1, but they are disposable.

gardenmusic · 28/05/2024 14:09

Jar opener. From £2.95 in Ikea, and upwards. It's worth a google, because depending on the recipient there are more appropriate versions, and many outlets.
There are some for those with a weaker grip, some for the visually impaired, some that can be screwed to a kitchen unit. Mine is just a Lakeland one with a strap for stubborn jars.

gardenmusic · 31/05/2024 19:19

Cashmere comb/ debobbler
Denner do one at £4.95, Amazon 3 for £5, and Dunelm for £2.99.
Not just for cashmere, will debobble any bobbly clothing.

I love that these ideas are so practical and useful, exactly what I was after from this thread. Thank you!

You are welcome. Bit stuck on 60 year old male's stocking right now.
Trying not to replicate previous years.

OMGitsnotgood · 31/05/2024 19:50

Men are the hardest, well my lot are anyway! A couple of hits with my over 60 male include battery tester (an idea picked up from MN, about £5 from Amazon )
Fairtrade type fitter coffee from Oxtam & got some chocolate from there too.
A metal ruler for diy

@gardenmusic what have you got so far? My DH is a similar age and I would get
Pants
Socks (Both of these are a given in our stockings)
Retro sweets
Amazon voucher for kindle books
Gardening bits and bobs - this year it will be a personalised outdoor mug, a mini dibber and a gizmo for pressing down soil after sowing seeds. I'm also looking at a tin from the Bernardo's sale that has deadheading snips and twine etc.

gardenmusic · 31/05/2024 20:00

Tool station do a pack of 10 carpenter's pencils (graphite, so writes on wet and dry wood, and oval, so it does not roll away)
That's what I have so far for him. He is actually keen on stone masonry, and ordinary pencils do not work.

gardenmusic · 01/06/2024 06:32

Ooh, another one, Nasal Strips. The nose plaster type that pulls out the blackheads.
Different brands vary in price, but you can buy for under £5.
My husband is a mixture of amazed and aghast when I 'do his nose'...
Don't let them open this on Christmas day - they will keep looking at the results.
Maybe I should put this on Sporner Corner.

gardenmusic · 01/06/2024 11:58

Has anyone tried the keyboard/ circuit board cleaning GOO?

I was looking for something to clean computers, and saw this - thought it a bit more 'presenty' than a bottle of cleaning spray. It looks like a gooey gel, and you roll it over the keyboard or circuit board.
I'm tempted, but a bit wary.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/06/2024 15:24

At the garden centre the other day I saw a really cute pack of slate plant labels, I think they were about £3.99 for five? (I can't be certain, I was wheeling a heavy trolley of pea shingle at the time). I might go back and pick some up because they would be perfect for the gardeners in my family.

gardenmusic · 01/06/2024 15:40

Yes, Vroom, I have seen those. Lovely. Might need a light coloured pencil to write on them, though.

Yes, I have. It's quite good and you can use it for things like remote controls too.

DuckEggy · 01/06/2024 23:47

Flower bombs to encourage bees are quite a good present.

Pack of coloured pencils = another stocking filler sorted!!
For SFs that go together like that, I wrap them separately but tie them together with ribbon .

Thanks, DuckyEggy.

Someone is going to get some nice, slimy, green GOO in their stocking.

gardenmusic · 02/06/2024 07:44

OMG,
I do that. Sister in law likes a particular white candle (the long ones)
I tie a bunch together with a ribbon of whatever colour I do that year.
Think I am going dark green tartan again this year.

gardenmusic · 02/06/2024 16:10

This is a weird one, think you would need to be older to appreciate it:

I have collected one of each pre decimal coin for the year of my sister's birth. (spending money, not sovereigns etc)
A jar of old coins was given to me, and I picked these out. They have very little cash value, but they are a talking point.
I think I can do the same for all my older stocking recipients.
Would it be weird to do it with decimal coins for the others?
How should I present the coins?

Boots on line Ted Baker Violet and Bergamot 250ml hand wash was £8 - ish now £2.50.
You can get it delivered to your local Boots free of charge if your order is £15+, so I usually add things I know I will want.
