Is Lapland worth it?

Is Lapland worth the cost? I just looked it up, for a family of 2 adults 2 children it is €5,500 with TUI for 3 nights.

It would be a once off if I ever do it. DS is only 1 and DC2 isn't born yet so I'm thinking in 6 years so could save in a credit union account.

But it is so much money! Our last holiday to Rome for a week cost us €1,500

I am one for going places off season as I don't love big crowds, but I would be worried that it would need to be near Christmas. Was it not strange to see Santa in Feb? did the kids wonder about that?

Baby no 2 has arrived and is 2 weeks old so I think we are a few years off going! But maybe when they are 6 and 8 would be good. I want the younger DS to understand fully what is going on, but older DS to still completely believe.

Nope, they didn’t find it strange, they saw it as being Santa at home/at work where he is the rest of the year. There’s Santa’s grotto with elves etc and you can book for him to do a personal visit to your cottage (this is in Santaclaus Village or whatever it’s called). It also meant they had something else to look forward to rather than squeezing all the usual Christmas treats into December. I did also weigh up November instead but there was a risk that there wouldn’t have been much snow yet.

When we went, it also made differences such as we could also book longer husky rides than were available at peak times, and no waiting crowds/waiting at the other attractions in Santa Claus village. We had brilliant trips skiing and to the wildlife park and to the museum in Rovaniemi. Spent a lovely week enjoying it all, flights and accommodation booked separately and much less than your quote despite being a full week.

The only thing that might not be so great is say for example the odd restaurant or bar in Santa Claus village that is only open for peak season.

We did Ruka and did a Christmas package rather than Rovaniemi a week before the school break up.

We still did reindeer, huskies, ski-doos and Santa.

It's cheaper. Still Lapland still magical. Just not touristtrapsville to the same degree.

It's a ski resort do options to ski (though at an additional price)

Crystal Ski (which is part of TUI).

My point being, there are cheaper options available.

So worth it, but beware it ruins Christmas forever afterwards! You will not regret a single penny, it is honestly the most magical place on earth.

@Clearinguptheclutter I do wonder that, is it one of those things regardless you'll say it's great because it cost so much. The first person I knew who went was a girl I lived with at uni. Her mum took her for a very long day trip. She said even as both being adults it was magical. I think a day trip would be mental unless everyone is an adult.

We are doing a day with 6yo because its short and sharp, can be done as a surprise day trip a few days before the actual xmas day so meeting santa will be amazing and it gets the main bits done without having to suit up for the cold and dry out gear over and over and and it's the last year we think she might truly believe. Plus I honesty bloody hate the cold 😆

I guess what I'm saying is that if i was going for longer, I'd want to do adult things like stay in a log cabin, go into glaciers, thermal springs, see northern lights, whiskey and wine in the evening, board games etc and so I'd probably be looking at somewhere like Iceland and not over the expensive Xmas period for the full on kids santa experience.

So my advice is have a think about what your must haves are and look at different deals that do all of those things - the day trip covered it all for us, even though it feels like an obscene amount of monry, but apparently tui make their flight super fun for kids as well, so for us the value is in the perfect once in a lifetime surprise moment.

I think this is one of those things where you might get more time for a little more money, which feels like better value on paper than the day trip but it depends if the extra time will be of value to you. 3 days of snowball fights and being in whatni anticipatenwill be a xmas-commercialised town freezing cold is not my jam! But I fully appreciate a lot of parents are more fun than me. I think there are loads if advice forums if you search "lapland at xmas forum" best of luck :)
