Hello!

Wondering if anybody got their DC a Yoto player for Christmas and was it a hit?

My DD is 9 in a couple of weeks and we are considering it for her. She finds getting to sleep difficult and I think she'd really enjoy listening to stories in bed.

Thanks!

Got our 4 year old one last Christmas and it's been used daily ever since! It's the best thing ever in my opinion...stopped him coming in to us when he woke in the night, now he just puts a story on and goes back to sleep!

Yes! We got my 7yo one as she listens to audio books most nights.

I didn’t like her having a tablet in her room for the audio books, but wanted her to have autonomy.

she also listens to the same ones over and over again, borrowed from the library, so I wasn’t worried about needing loads of new books for it.

she’s loved it. I was worried it would be too young, but it’s not. Plus you can make your own cards.

and there are loads of podcasts and radio stations they can access too.

in fact, you can link any podcast with an RSS feed to one of the cards.

the cards are expensive, but you can get some good second hand deals sometimes.

Hmm... honestly I'd day at 9- no. My youngest DD has one she got when she was almost 3 and has loved it- being able to choose her own stories and all the books like the gruffalo etc. But she is now (almost 5) getting more I to the books her older sisters have on audible (8 and 10). She is able to get alexa to work now, though still uses the yoto and my older children have used audible for a few years. The books are slightly cheaper (especially if you buy in the constant sales) and the variety is wider.

With that said yoto is more portable than alexa- cab be used when travelling and none of the same safety concerns so that may appeal to you.

Been amazing for my DS, but he's only 3. The sleep sounds have been a lifesaver.

Yes definitely. We use the library for audiobooks to put on the cards. So doesn't have to be expensive. It's brilliant.

Yes. We've had the big Yoto in the boys room for 2.5 years, they are now ages 12 and 11. It is used for audiobooks every single night to help with wind down and relaxation. The kids still read too.
Yoto are bringing out more older child material all the time too.
My 11yo girl got a Yoto Mini for Christmas as she had been using the Yoto app on her phone. Far prefer to use the actual Yoto and keep phones out the room at night. She is a fan of bedtime meditations to help her sleep. It's been a staple of the bedtime routine here since we purchased. I use it too sometimes!

I'd recommend it, but I think it depends on the child what age they get into it or not.
We got the yoto when our daughter was 6. She liked the music and daily podcasts but didn't take to the audio books like I hoped. It stopped working and got forgotten. She's 8 now and just getting into independent reading for pleasure so I thought I'd try the mini yoto for Xmas. It has pause and rewind features and we still have lots of audio card, and I thought it would be more mobile. And it's been a hit! She now listens to audio books at night to wind down and seems to be really enjoying that bit of autonomy and sometimes has music on when playing.

Oh I meant to add that our neighbour got a yoto for her 5 yr old last xmas and she was not in the slightest bit interested. I've reassured it may happen when older.

avocadotofu · 07/01/2024 09:00

We got one for our 5 year old and he absolutely loves it and has used it multiple times daily. I wasn't sure how much he'd actually use it and il surprised by how much he loves it.

babbaganoush · 07/01/2024 09:11

We got a mini yoto each for our 5yo and 3yo for Christmas and they've been used every day since. Big hit here and I think the vast range of cards is fantastic. The 5yo also really enjoys the daily podcast and radio.

We got our dd one for her 8th birthday, she’s now 10 and a half and loves it so much she’s had a mini for Xmas, as pp says lots of older stories being brought out. We love it because Yoto makes it easy to use and select stories and it’s cute and portable, reminds me of the classics stories on tape that I played on my Walkman as a child! I think we will be using for a fair few years yet. I have audible on my phone which I use to play stories in the car on the school run, perhaps because we haven’t got dd a phone yet it makes the Yoto more valuable but even when we go down that route I see it as still being used especially as it will probably be an old spec phone for as long as possible!

We have Yotos and love them. You can borrow audiobooks from the library using BorrowBox, and put MP3s onto 'Make Your Own' cards. They love music on the Yotos, too.

For a 9yo I'd suggest a mini as they're so portable. Great value IMO. I have a referral code for 10% off if you want it?
