It's Christmas.....you have known about it for a year, why are you ordering gifts last minute or food on Christmas eve?

Genuine wonder.

Because I think there's loads of time and then there isn't.

Because I've forgotten something or DC have added/amended the list.

Because going shopping just before Christmas often leads to discounts and carollers make it feel super Christmassy and I love it.

Because some stuff needs to be purchased close to the date.

Because I live life on the edge and enjoy pissing off judgemental pricks who feel superior because they knew it was Christmas and just planned better.

It matters to those who have to work because the customer demand is there rather than them having family time I guess.

Most people have to work though…

No most places are shut

I didn’t finish work til yesterday. It’s been a very busy three months with many other things needing organising and paying for. I’ve struggled to know what I want to buy.
Why does it matter to you?

If you don't demand it then I don't work is why it matters lol 😂

one present didn’t turn up (ordered a while ago, tracking kept promising delivery that didn’t happen); seeing an extended family member unexpectedly and don’t want them to feel out when others opening gifts

Sounds reasonable

  1. ADHD. I find it very hard to focus until the deadline is imminent (for everything in my life, not just Christmas. It's a shit way to live, lurching from one near-crisis to the next). Also other executive dysfunction such a poor memory and organisation makes it a difficult task to approach in a sensible way.
  1. Payday, I only just got paid - although I have been using credit this month to be fair, so I could have got it all done before now if I was more organised.

Because it gives someone something to start a thread on

Islandermummy · 25/12/2023 04:59

I used to love Christmas shopping for presents right before Christmas: quieter shops, maybe wear something festive, have a drink while you're out, feel Christmassy! (Also I needed to get paid...)

Now I'm older I think there can still be a similar vibe for getting a few last food bits. I'm also one of those people who doesn't put decs up until well into December... somehow the season feels more special/magical to me if it's short and concentrated! Rather than working through a list in November. (I wouldn't leave non-negotiables like the main meat dish so late though if I could avoid it)

Islandermummy · 25/12/2023 05:15

Aside from if you need to travel, I can't see working on Christmas Eve is that unfair; Christmas Eve is a normal working day for office workers if it falls on a week day (perhaps with a cheeky early finish if your boss is nice).

Although thinking about it, we (office workers) probably would be allowed to take annual leave though if there's adequate cover, which presumably you cannot if you're in retail, hence your annoyance. I get that, if you need to drive to see family.

And I do feel sorry for people that have to work on Christmas Day.

Went out for a couple of bits this morning and it was dead quiet though!

notsub · 25/12/2023 07:38

I had to laugh at myself yesterday ...walked to the local Tesco for a few last minute bits and moaned loudly to the dog about all the people in there leaving their shopping till the last minute.

Tumbleweed101 · 25/12/2023 08:35

This year because of my workload and busy days off with appointments. Plus less motivated due to bereavement and my youngest going to her dads for Xmas week. I haven’t put half the thought into xmas as I usually do. When kids were younger i was usually prepared by mid Decemeber.

Borris · 23/12/2023 19:08

Some people were paid yesterday

But Xmas has been on this date for 12 months... they haven't been paid for the first time this YEAR.

I got paid on Friday like many people, my shopping was all long done before then.

housethatbuiltme · 25/12/2023 10:50

Yesterday I did nip in Asda for some general snack bits for the kids and the man behind me was buying a dressing gown for his wife saying how he was proud he hadn't left it to the 'last minute' this year as he was buying it at 10am (on Xmas eve) instead of 3.50pm as the shop was closing like he usual does lol.

As someone with executive dysfunction Im the exact OPPOSIT.

I start shopping in July so its all done before Xmas, everything is spreadsheet out with plenty of time so missed deadlines aren't disastrous. I absoloutly couldn't function leaving it to the last minute. The overwhelm would be crippling.

Because I've got ADHD and find it impossible to do anything without the pressure of it having to be done RIGHT NOW.

HTH.

Oh wow, I never thought about it like this, but yes! THIS is why I do everything last minute!
