Christmas food shop - when to go?

Assuming you haven't got an order in /collecting an order - not relevant Xmas Grin

I'm thinking I will have to go first thing on Saturday morning, but hoping not every last man/woman (and their dog) are also going on Saturday morning.

Have most people already done their 'big' shop?

I've had a lousy cold this week and been at work/basically not been motivated to brave Aldi or M and S yet

I normally do the 23rd first thing no matter what day it falls on, but by first thing I mean out by 6.30 and at the shop for 7.

Stressedgiraffe · 21/12/2023 18:58

I'm going tomorrow afternoon if I get to finish work early. We only need meat. We have sides and dessert. I also need to do a normal shop too. Hopefully it won't be too busy.

dothehokeycokey · 21/12/2023 19:01

We went today to get non fresh stuff and will be going really early on Xmas eve morning again as picking adult dd up at 6.30 am from somewhere so killing two birds with one stone

littleblackcat27 · 21/12/2023 19:03

@ICANTSPEYK when you go really early like that - does everyone else have the same idea?? (sorry if that's a dumb question)

We have two food orders booked (a Tesco and an Ocado) for today and 23rd.

We popped into Waitrose today around lunchtime, and it was surprisingly normal. Obviously it was busier than an average Thursday, but no worse than a normal Saturday - so, it might not be as bad as you think.

We did it today, were planning on going the 23rd as we usually do, but went to get petrol and saw that the car park wasn't too busy! Everything had long dates on so did a shop for the usual weekly stuff and Christmas Dinner and a few nibbles. Will just have to get bread and fresh stuff nearer the time. I usually go really early on the 23rd but I do think lots have the same idea; maybe evening is better and many shops have deliveries throughout the day over Christmas so probably won't have bare shelves.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 21/12/2023 19:06

Tomorrow, local Aldi 11am

tiredandolderthanithought · 21/12/2023 19:07

I've done it today. Everything will last so made sense

DGPP · 21/12/2023 19:08

I’ve done mine in M&S as the use by dates were until the 26th/27th!

AnnaMagnani · 21/12/2023 19:08

Thankfully have done 80% already.

However went into Tesco to get some lunch today and found a queue of 20+ trolleys all lined round the side of the shop.

Dread to think what it will be like on Saturday so will do the rest tomorrow - and take a basket not a trolley!

Ladyj84 · 21/12/2023 19:09

Going tomorrow and whatever is there make do lol

clary · 21/12/2023 19:09

I've got quite a bit but I need things like cream, green veg, salad stuff and fruit. Soft fruit for 25th, salad for 26/27 ideally.

Finish work early tomorrow so may raid monster Tesco at 2pm ish. Or else Morrisons Sat pm

No, it's busier than it normally would be at that time but completely bearable and no kids everywhere (why it takes 2 parents and all 3 kids to do the Xmas shop I'll never know!).

I write my list in the order of the shop too and just whiz through normally.

I booked a Sainsbury's slot early.. had it delivered today.
All good.. only one item was substituted and that was loo rolls.
Got absolutely everything.. all long dates.

YES! I went after work on Christmas Eve last year, arriving at Sainsbury's at 7am. It was as busy as a busy time on a normal day.

I've been really lucky I've just ( in the last hour) looked at Sainsbury’s and booked a delivery for Saturday and I'm over the moon! Didn't bother to book a slot when released as I was planning on doing the shopping myself but as luck would have it have come down with a bad cold. Only £1.50 charge as well.

Tulipvase · 21/12/2023 20:05

We went today. Turkey is being delivered tomorrow. We went to Waitrose, Tesco and Aldi and they were all relatively quiet. Tesco was the busiest.

DelilahBucket · 21/12/2023 20:17

I find tea time is usually quietest where we live. Went to Morrisons at 5pm today, didn't have to queue more than a minute.

Willmafrockfit · 21/12/2023 20:19

i am going tomorrow after work so 5.30 ish

Titsywoo · 21/12/2023 20:23

About 9pm tomorrow

Brontosaurus · 21/12/2023 20:26

I did mine yesterday at Sainsbury's. The only thing I couldn't get in date was raspberries. But all the meat, pigs in blankets, desserts etc are all dated until at least the 26th. I got there for about 7:15. Wasn't busy initially but by the time I was leaving it had picked up.

PumpkinPie2016 · 21/12/2023 20:37

I'm going tomorrow- I finish work at 1.45pm so will go straight there.

I went to the butchers on my way home this eve so that's sorted.

Hoping I don't need to brave the shops until after Christmas once I have done tomorrow.
