Any suggestions for a board/card game for Christmas?

Playing with 10 year old, and parents and grandparents.

Something not too long to learn, game length of between 20-45 mins?

Last Xmas got 'Big Money' which is superb, hit the spot for the above players and got played a lot this year, but we want a change

Thanks - ideas appreciated

Labyrinth

Uno flip

LenaLamont · 21/12/2023 17:40

Villainous, Pandemic, Forbidden Island/Desert, Blockbuster are all good.

Have you played No Thanks!, @CheCheChe ? it takes about 5 seconds to understand, can move quickly and is an easy multi-generational game.

Scattegories - each get a list of things to name. Roll an alphabet dice for the letter. Timer while you list all the answers with that letter. You only get points if no one else gives the same answer.

CheCheChe · 21/12/2023 17:42

No, not tried that....I'll check it out on Amazon now - thanks

Dobble - a card is laid face up with an assortment of images on, and someone will have a card which has am image which matches, they call out the image and put their card on top, and that becomes the new card for everyone to match something too. Keep playing till someone gets rid of all their cards.

Today we’ve played Forbidden Planet and Carcassonne with kids age 8 & 6.

Also like game of life, uno flip (although can go on and on and on), shut the box (probably too easy/simple)… Cranium is my fave!

The point with Dobble is that EVERYONE will have a symbol on their card that matches. You've just got to make your match before anyone else makes theirs. It’s magic!!

Another good one which doesn't need purchasing is Spoons.

Everyone sits around a table with a pile of spoons in the centre (one less spoon than there is people).

Deal everyone 4 cards. Someone starts off and picks up a card from the leftovers, then discards a card they don't want, to their left, and the person on their left picks that up, and again discards one to their left and so on. The aim is to get 4 of the same card (4x 5s or 4x queens etc). As soon as someone has 4 if the same, they should SPOONS and everyone has to grab a spoon. Whoever doesn't have a spoon at the end is either out or made to do a trick/dare/forfeit.

Articulate is always a winner with us. I think there's also a kids version.

leafinthewind · 21/12/2023 17:47

Doomlings. Quick to learn, easy to play, feels like it uses skill but is actually mostly luck!

Cluedo is pretty easy, and the older generations may remember it from first time round.

Ticket to Ride is traditional-type board game - quite an easy set up, straightforward rules, lots of fun.

CheCheChe · 21/12/2023 17:48

I love 'home-made' games like that...absolutely brilliant thanks. (I am an ageing old hippy though and like the idea of not buying/consuming any more of the earths resources than we really need, and have often made up such kind of games with bits of paper and stuff ....but I think the kids and grandkids might want me to get a 'proper' board game. But either way - I will use the 'spoons' game. Thanks for idea

Ticket to ride is a brilliant family game. Games take about an hour

SecondUsername4me · 21/12/2023 17:51

Articulate is an excellent game.

leafinthewind · 21/12/2023 17:52

I played yesterday with my teenager and it took about half an hour. It's slower with more people, especially beginners - probably 40-50 minutes. It doesn't drag on because once you've played your trains the game is over.

OddityOddityOdd · 21/12/2023 18:02

Linkee. 5 questions on a card. One word answer to each question, find the theme. It's quick, no complicated rules and you can play as individuals or as teams.

Letterbix · 21/12/2023 18:05

Codenames
Chicken! (Dice game)
Scotland Yard
Poetry for Neanderthals

These are our current faves ☺️ I have a Christmas edition of Articulate for Christmas Day 😀
