My kids are well out of this stage now but I have a lot of 0-5 year olds to buy for this year so looking for any brilliant picture book recommendations good to read aloud please and where your children can join in shouting out the key phrases. The newer the better!

Thinking about ones like Shark in the Park, Octopants, Eat Your Peas - thank you if you can help!

Not so new but Oi Frog and the rest of the series are excellent - lots of rhyming words. I also like The Night Before The Night Before Christmas (and the Night After Christmas) although not so much shouting out there.

For little ones Stomp by Jeanne Willis was really lovely.

I don't think any of them are new unfortunately.

My children found DAVE by Sue Hendra to be hilarious, and I've gifted it several times. Lot's to join in with.

MissAmandaJones · 14/12/2023 12:42

I loved reading What the Ladybird Heard (Julia Donaldson) to my children when they were small. Lots of rhyming and ability to join in after a couple of times reading through.

The Book With No Pictures is brilliant

MsFrog · 14/12/2023 13:08

"There's a bear on my chair." My two love it. Better than "we disagree about this tree", I think, which just came out in October. There's also "There's a mouse in my house", which I haven't read

No Matter What by Debi Gilori - used to make me blub. It's lovely.
The Bog Baby is just beautiful.

These aren't new but highly recommended.

No matter what is also a fav here. There are two versions though - the original one about death is my favourite. Her other books are also good with Dragon Loves Penguin touching on adoption.

Another one is Hairy Maclary of Donaldson's Dairy and the rest of the series.

I really do love a good kids book! Mine is now stuck on Star Wars.

stargirl1701 · 14/12/2023 13:31

The You Choose series. There's a new Christmas version out now.

cloudjumper · 14/12/2023 13:31

Tell Me A Dragon is beautiful

We Found a Hat by Jon Klassen

Onionsmadeofglass · 14/12/2023 13:38

All the Chris Haughton books are great. More something I’d but for 0-3 year olds but 4-5 year olds would still enjoy them.
Oh no, George! (Good for naughty toddlers)
Shhh! We have a plan.
Goodnight everyone (great for new parents with a baby)
Don’t worry little crab (good for an anxious kid)
Maybe… (a personal favourite of mine)
Well done Mummy Penguin. (My toddler loved this one)

BurntOrange · 14/12/2023 13:39

Cockatoos by Quentin Blake
Any of the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes or the Mog books by Judith Kerr
The Jolly Postman, Funny Bones or Burglar Bill by Janet and Allen Ahlberg

Onionsmadeofglass · 14/12/2023 13:39

And ´We found a hat’ is lovely. ‘This is not my hat’ and ´I lost my hat’ by the author are brilliant but quite blackly funny

Onionsmadeofglass · 14/12/2023 13:40

Sorry the last one is actually called ´I want my hat back’

VeruccaSalty · 14/12/2023 13:53

Mine loved The Funny Fingers and the Funny Fingers Are Having a Party! Something about a finger wearing a raspberry or cherry tomato as a hat really tickled them.

MiniStormInATeacup · 14/12/2023 14:31

Julia Donaldson - Paper dolls is so emotional to read as a parent.

We loved Slinky Malinky and Hairy Maclairy books.

A great Christmas one is Jesus' Christmas Party. We also liked The Snowman and The Night Before Christmas. Also Stickman and The Gruffalos child seem very wintery/Christmassy

Tom Percival books are great - we liked Ruby's Worry and Perfectly Norman

For girlie girls you cannot go wrong with The Fairytale Hairdresser books they are super twists on fairytale my daughter loved the artwork in them.

Would endorse anyone who said Oi Frog and all that series because again we loved them and they were read a lot!

MiniStormInATeacup · 14/12/2023 14:32

Also special mention to Storybook Orchestra books. They are gorgeous to look at and play classical music from the story. We have Swan Lake and it tells that story with music from the ballet.

heybearx · 14/12/2023 14:33

Not quite a story as such but You Choose - Christmas is a great book.
And obviously the jolly Christmas postman, brilliant childhood memories

GrumpyPanda · 14/12/2023 14:44

Gilles Bachelet, My Cat, the silliest cat in the world. About an elephant who thinks he's a cat and behaves just like one. Cue insistent kiddies: "But, but, he's an elephant!!" Also plenty of in-jokes for the grown-ups.
