I have no idea what to buy my mum for Christmas. I mean, no idea.

I've already got her a whiskey selection box
And an air fryer cook book.
But I can think of nothing else.

She's in bad health so doesn't really go anywhere or do anything.
She has diabetes so lots of easy presents are off the menu.
She doesn't watch TV.
She can't read very well.
She recently sorted her bathroom out and has a metric tonne of smelly bath shit.

She needs shit loads of work doing in her house which I've offered to help with and pay towards. I've even offered to buy her a new house.
She doesn't want these things.

Please, please give me some inspiration.....

The past few years I've got her an Oodie, a new tablet, a Netflix subscription, a YouTube Premium subscription.

FirstFallopians · 13/12/2023 15:39

Some lovely pjs would always go well for me…I almost mourn my Ted Bakers no longer fitting due to weight loss!

ChateauDuMont · 13/12/2023 15:42

Bouquet of flowers subscription?

Restinggoddess · 13/12/2023 15:54

Would she like to have her nails done / spa treatment? Might boost how she feels if she has been unwell

Afternoon tea - with yourself? This gets her out and about

I like the idea of a flower subscription

Best of luck - many of us in the same boat

Feel your pain. Just schlepped found town for hours looking for something for my difficult and ungrateful mother. Ended up getting a boring jumper from M&S. At least she can swap it.

givemushypeasachance · 13/12/2023 16:25

Does she like tea/coffee? If so a subscription to some of that. A fancy thermal mug or one of those ones that plugs in and keeps your drink hot.

Anything she has and enjoys that is a bit basic or getting worn out, a new or upgraded version. E.g. if she has a cheap and basic set of kitchen knives, a decent professional one. Or a really nice dressing gown.

If she doesn't go out and doesn't watch TV what does she do all day? Can you get her something related to that?

Bird feeders to make the view more interesting? (When DMIL comes here for respite from FIL she sits on the sofa and watches the birds and is chilled and calm and happy)

Nice warm slippers. I've got my DM a plant she said she regretted not buying at the garden centre recently, but also a fun china mug with a robin on (she likes them), a lovely t-towel with nice characters on them, a mini xmas cake (she never buys one as it'd be too much for one person), luxury chocolate slab and socks with fun penguins on them.

Ohdearohdearohdea · 13/12/2023 16:56

Massage/facial

Speaking as a mum of n adult child, I don’t want any gifts. I’d much rather spend time with my DS.

GranOakley · 13/12/2023 17:02

There are some great suggestions here, thank you.

I should've said in my OP that I live quite far away from her so some things (tea, spa day etc.) sound lovely but would need to be squeezed in to the two days she's visiting me at Christmas which isn't that feasible.

I love the idea of cashmere socks - I'll check those out.

She sleeps on her sofa so I'd love to get her new bedding (because I love fancy bedding) but it wouldn't get used. Because she sleeps on the sofa, she doesn't wear PJs but just dozes off in whatever she's wearing that day. So PJs are out. But I might look for some super soft joggers or similar - any recommendations?

@olderbutwiser What does she do all day? Good question - mainly watches conspiracy nutjobs on YouTube and pops to Tesco to be honest.

My mum has a very strange attitude towards presents. It's difficult to explain but she'll absolutely expect a handful of presents to open when she's here. My company absolutely isn't enough (which she makes very clear, LOL)

I forgot to say that a flower subscription is a great idea, thank you. Any recommendations?

I've done a year with bloom and wild. My friend says they're lovely every month! They come early/unbloomed and then you vase them up and they come alive.

DuesToTheDirt · 13/12/2023 17:15

I struggle greatly with presents for my mum. She often doesn't like them and will tell me so! (I couldn't eat those biscuits, they were too hard... ooh that's a lot of soap, I'll never get through it... I've read those books before) Hmm.

One success the last couple of years has been photo calendars from Boots, with pictures of me and our family on. It feels a bit egocentric, but she has really enjoyed them.

Stanislas · 13/12/2023 17:19

I have AC who have in the past given me a different gin every month,a book every month tailored to my tastes, macaroons every month, flowers every month, candles every month. This is very generous but birthday and Xmas together as they’re close. What I would like is a trial run of something like Gousto to see if it would be worth it for my lifestyle,a day with a declutterer,an alpaca pashmina to replace the thirty year old one that is almost transparent from use( the warmest thing ever),a metallic bird table type of thingummy which is squirrel proof.
no need to thank me ladies.

GranOakley · 13/12/2023 17:24

@DuesToTheDirt I'm glad you've found something that's worked out!

@TallulahG Wonderful, thank you!

@Stanislas I go to my mum's every year for her b'day and say "You have me for two days, put me to work" and she uses me as a declutterer, a tidy-upper etc. She loves it and I can definitely see how this would work well. Unfortunately, I don't think she'd tolerate anyone other than me helping with decluttering. Or else, they'd just murder her!

Ridiculous post, you've got some presents. Its not a cabbage or drop situation.
