MIL is the HARDEST person ever to buy for. She doesn't really have any hobbies, doesn't like food presents (have given her a hamper of home made food and drink last year and no one has looked less impressed at anything...!) and has an incredibly minimalist house so doesn't like home gifts. She doesn't like going places she hasn't been so a restaurant/theatre voucher wouldn't be used.
Every Christmas or birthday she kills me! Anyway I have got her:

  • Fluffy slippers
  • Gel eye mask that can be kept in fridge or warmed
  • Small box of chocolates
  • Make up bag
Does this sound ok?

My mil likes winter warming things such as foot warmers, hat and scarf sets she also likes bath presents, make up or jewelry.

Although last time i bought her a dress and she was over the moon!

I’m 65 and would love

some fab pyjamas
afternoon tea voucher
great chocs
nice facecream ( happy with number 7)
an Amazon voucher for my kindle habit
a coffee table book
a ‘made up’ voucher for lunch out with DIL
nice jogging bottoms for lazing
voucher for salon to get nails/lashes done
any type of good hamper/box
spa day

In short, things that spoil me. Sod practical.

adriftabroad · 14/12/2023 13:13

Buyvher exactly what you would yourself.

Slightlyboredandseverlyconfused · 14/12/2023 13:13

Neals Yard shower and bath stuff. The gift of beautiful smells!

Ramalangadingdong · 14/12/2023 13:14

What a lovely DIL you are. Wish I had a nice thoughtful DlL. I would be grateful with whatever she got me.

Seriously, this is such a ridiculous question and thread. You can’t make generalisations based on age!!

As it's proven by all the generalised answers 😏

No. She if she is between 50 and 60 she is polite.
My sister is 52 with a 5year old.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 14/12/2023 13:17

Foot spa? Face packs, foot gel packs, hair masks. I'm in my 50s and I love a pamper sesh.

Toastcrumbsinsofa · 14/12/2023 13:23

@GotMooMilk I would swap the fluffy slippers for some fluffy socks. Slippers are tricky to buy for someone else. Seasalt have a nice selection and they are very comfortable. I’d also swap the eye gel mask for a good quality sleep pillow spray.

Pifful · 14/12/2023 13:29

If she likes wine then I wouldn't give it any more thought. A decent bottle or two for every present.
I'm 65 and I dearly wish my DH or DC would actually ask me what I would like instead of being inspired. I want things that are boring to them but not to me, things for my hobbies, but if not then wine or chocolate is always welcome.

BungledBundle · 14/12/2023 13:30

I sympathise, OP, I have someone who's similarly difficult to buy for.

I am 51 and would love White Company home fragrances - pretty much any of them - candles or even better diffusers as you can set them up and leave them. Or lovely shower gel from Jo Malone - if shower gel then it doesn't matter if the fragrance isn't quite right. Something useable as you only need so many slippers and make up bags. Cashmere bed socks are also a luxury.

Cantbeardarknights · 14/12/2023 13:31

50 and absolutely wouldn’t want any of them,
would prefer

candles and diffusers from white company etc.

Nice lipstick or eye make up from Mac / Bobbi brown / Charlotte tilbury / VB

bottle of whispering angel

blobby10 · 14/12/2023 13:37

i'm 54 and the gel eye mask sounds great as they are supposed to be brilliant for dry eyes caused by peri but the others are a bit 'meh'. I would LOVE some/several pairs of warm fluffy socks to wear around the house - our local garden centre had some with those plastic areas underneath so they are not slippery. I dropped lots of hints to my DS(25!) but don't think it went in.

How about a silk pillowcase? Also supposed to help with sleeping if peri?
I love candles but have developed an allergy to all scented stuff - thanks peri! NOT! - so would never use them.

Would she use on of those smartish cross body handbags? A mid-size handbag for going out for the day?

Gettingbysomehow · 14/12/2023 13:43

I don't like any of these things as I have very specific hobbies and interests and prefer to buy my own things - I'm 62.
My best christmas gift would be gift vouchers for Amazon.

Boredandbitter · 14/12/2023 13:43

Go online to Oxfam unwrapped and buy a goat for a family on her behalf.

Yes, ignore people saying 'my MIL likes' as invariably they are very different to what the MILs themselves are saying!

adriftabroad · 14/12/2023 13:48

I need ideas for a 40year old.

🙄

SingleMum11 · 14/12/2023 13:48

Get her a make up session at a store or a voucher for nice face cream.

I think slippers and make up bags, unless they are really lovely, are things you already have or choose for yourself. Also don’t get the gel eye things.

You clearly hate your MiL

Theoldwoman · 14/12/2023 13:49

It sounds perfect OP.

Seeingadistance · 14/12/2023 13:52

Menopause has brought me the "gift" of very dry eyes, so I'd be delighted with the eye mask!

adriftabroad · 14/12/2023 13:55

Honestly, people.Reread in 10 years.

A goat from Oxfam?
I have a young teen and a need for sex and alcohol.

My MIL is so hard to buy for so I dont bother now. We have bought her so many presents for her birthday and Christmas over the years and she has never used them, lost them or just didn't appreciate them.

Real pearl earrings, she loves pearls but all fake. She never wore them.

Clothes from the shop she buys her clothes from, right size and the same as the clothes she wears, brought them back because she was planning on losing weight and didn't want more clothes, it was literally two tops. She never did lose the weight.

Dermalogica set - asked what skincare I used and requested a set as a gift. Never used it. Didn't even take it out of the gift bag as I seen it gathering dust on her landing dresser.

Tickets to a concert of a singer she called my DH after. She went to the concert but left halfway through as sound was apparently bad, it wasn't.

More tickets, said performer was miming and made a joke about stupid people not noticing. Myself and DH were also at the concert.

Luxury hamper with specialised foods as she had recently diagnosed food intolerance. She said she wouldn't eat anything in it as she was staying away from the free from food. Her press was full of gluten free products.

Voucher to get nails done after she admired mine and enquired about getting them done. Let the voucher go out of date and then said she could do a better job herself, she couldn't.

Designer sunglasses, left them in a hotel bathroom.

Camcorder, left it on a table in Croatia.

Vouchers for many shops didn't use them.

Specialised runners that were recommended by her podiatrist. She had other footwear from the brand but not runners. She wanted to go walking so we bought them. Never wore them.

Designer bag, gave it to a charity shop as said she didn't think it was real, it was.

Lots of other stuff. DH now gives her cash which I hate but she loves. Sorry op just needed to get that of my chest.

Ooft. I'm sorry you've had to deal with this x

Pomegranatecarnage · 14/12/2023 13:56

Doesn’t like going anywhere she hasn’t been? Bloody hell. Surely there has to be a first time for everything. I am 53 and would like bamboo socks, really nice lotions or shower gels, books or alcohol.

Pomegranatecarnage · 14/12/2023 14:00

That’s obviously a passive aggressive response. Sorry, but she sounds deeply unpleasant. I admire your patience for keeping going for so long.
