This is more complex than the title suggests. They have a reading age of 16 plus, done by test at school but are quite a young 11. Likes books like The boy in the back of the class (got the new one) and interested in Geography and Languages.
i just need two more to add to his stocking.
Also my 14 year old is a reluctant reader at around a 10 year old level and likes princesses, fairies etc. any ideas for a couple of books for her would be great. She’s read all the fairy book range with me when she was younger…

What about Enid Blyton for your 14 year old? Malory Towers etc.
I know this isn’t high quality literature! But the series aspect, similarity of plot and character, familiar names and setting, really hooked my dyslexic DD and helped turn the reading corner.

Your 14 year old is certainly old enough to read Terry Pratchett. The younger one might like Bunny Vs Monkey, it a comic style and the stories are only a couple of pages long. My nearly 8 year old (high reading age) loves it and even as an adult I find it funny.

The mysterious Benedict society.
Mine loved them 😻

Face by Benjamin Zephaniah
Z for Zachariah
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
They both die at the end by Adam Silvera
Last one to die by Cynthia Murphy
Looking for Alaska by John Green

I have a 10 year old with a similar reading age. He likes Percy Jackson, Magnus chase, heroes of Olympia etc.

Philippa Gregory the order of darkness series.
Hunger games
Twilight
Michael morpurgo
Katherine Rundell
Young James Bond series
Sherlock holmes.
Skullduggery pleasant
The boy in the striped pyjamas (this one upset him).
The gone series by Michael grant (a bit gory but he enjoyed them)

It's hard finding books that are suitable for good readers who are younger. Mine gets scared easily and that limits his choices too.

I wonder if your 14 year old would like Lari Don’s book of girls in myths and legends - Girls, Goddesses and Giants or Fierce, Fearless and Free - my DD loved them! They are essentially fairy tales from around the world.

Alakazam8 · 18/12/2023 14:28

Just to clarify a bit 14 years has very poor comprehension so she can read the words but limited understanding of what she is reading. She may seem old enough for Terry Pratchett and they are good stories but she wouldn’t understand them.
girls goddesses and giants and those sort of books sound great for her, thanks.
bunny vs monkey would probably suit them too.
I might look at twisted tales too for 14 think they’d like those if not too complex..

If your 14 year old is quite young for her age I wouldn't recommend Heartstopper or the other Alice Osemon books tbh. Dd is 13 and found it too mature emotionally with the relationships and intense teen feelings, I did wonder if it was aimed at slightly older teens? It has an easy to read appearance being a graphic novel, but wasn't what my dd's mature enough for content wise.

She loved Mallory Towers for a while, we liked watching the BBC series together and I I talked about reading the books myself when I was about 11/12 I think. So bought her the first 3 books which she enjoyed, though she does love history and "the olden days" as she calls it! So that probably helped as some of the language is very old fashioned British, she found that endearing whereas her friend found it hilarious apparently.

That phase is over now though and she's getting into Manga like some of her friends, graphic novels of the anime shows they're into. I've watched some of the shows with her to get an idea of what they're about, but just reminded myself I meant to cast my eye over the books too.

How about My side of the Mountain for the younger one?

for 14 the princess and the goblin? Terry Pratchett Tiffany Aching series? Or the Dark is rising sequence, not fairies but magic.

Whatdoyouwantforxmas · 18/12/2023 14:56

apologies, just seen your post not TP.

at which point the princess and the goblin might be a bit difficult, although it is captivating when you can follow the story. The secret garden?

look up Raina Telgemeier for the 14 year old x
