Book help!

9 year old dd has thrown me this morning by saying that she really wants a book that tells her where words come from and why things are called what they are if that makes sense!

It's a book not a toy so I don't mind getting one last thing and it's her birthday in February so I may save it for then.

Trouble is I don't know any books like this but there must be some out there!

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks.

No worries. My younger son was also fascinated by etymology and he had some books. I couldn't find the particular ones but these look similar. Hope she loves whatever you get.

In my 40s and the entire bound Oxford English Dictionary still tops my imaginary wishlist! I did get Chambers (considerably smaller) Dictionary of Etymology last year though. Love that there are great resources for dc too.

Suzie Dent has written a couple of children's books, Weird Words and Roots of Joy, and explains things beautifully.

Ha ha! Are you me? OED was always on my Xmas list. When I got to uni I realised how big it is...
