Need a fresh idea! Fussy in laws are coming so maybe 2 ideas that are easy to do on the morning of Christmas day in a small kitchen!

prawn cocktails

SeaToSki · 10/12/2023 11:42

We skip starters to safe our appetites for the main meal. Also I cant be fished.

If I HAD to I would do something that could be prepped in advance and needed no last minute oven time

smoked salmon with salady bits plated prettily and nice baguette with butter
vichysoise. With baguette and butter

VeruccaSalty · 10/12/2023 11:43

Ooh I am in similar boat with no gluten, no dairy relative. Also needs to be kid friendly.

If you watch Mary Berry's recent programme - I think she suggests serving canapés with drinks and therefore no need for any starter. Can't remember what they were now - but Rylan was on the programme.

Forgottenmyphone · 10/12/2023 12:09

We’re not having starters, just canapés/nibbles:

Caprese skewers
Proscuitto and melon bites

elfintinsel · 10/12/2023 12:24

We are having Brie and cranberry on butteries (Aberdeenshire bakery product - like a really salty croissant. Tricky to describe! Sound awful, taste delicious!
smoked salmon Bellinis, min vegetable quiches
These will be around 10:30 then we will have Christmas lunch at about 1:30. Straight into main course and pudding.
We will have scotch broth around 6:30 with yet more pudding!

Smoked salmon always. We did stray once but any other meat was too heavy.

Smkd salmon with asparagus and bread.

GettingStuffed · 10/12/2023 15:33

Not sure yet but I'm leaning towards tandoori prawns

newnamechangeforthisone · 10/12/2023 16:58

We don't. As we fill up too much on mains.

astarsheis · 10/12/2023 17:03

Prawn cocktail made with Wasabi mayonnaise

It can be made a few days in advance, so then all you have to do on The Day is plate it up. I serve it with some redcurrant jelly and some watercress, plates of (by then cold) toast for people to help themselves.

Or melon slices with a bit of parma ham draping it?

Mary Berry with Rylan did tiny cheese scones with some toasted cheese and cranberry in the top.

We also do canapés with drinks and no starter. Starters = too many dirty plates and prep stuff in the kitchen amidst the dinnner prep.

Tiny tarts made in advance, frozen, heated on a tray / smoked salmon blinis / tiny chicken satay sticks / crab mayo in little gem leaves, anything you like.

Good thread OP. I'm undecided too.

We'll have roast duck with all the trimmings for main
Home made mince pies and ginger ice cream

But starters....I don't know yet. I'd prefer a veggie something
