Digital watch, but not a smart watch

I am trying to find a watch that basically looks like a Fitbit but does not track activity

It needs some of the functionality of a smart watch (clear display, plain strap, streamlined design, vibrating alarm if possible) but must not track steps etc

Any ideas? I can find digital watches that look like something from the 80s, but nothing with the sleek design! I would compromise on a kids watch if it isn't too in your face!

Could you get a Fitbit and just not connect it to your phone? I don't know if that's possible but worth considering. I have a Samsung Galaxy watch and it still works if not connected to my phone.

Depends on why OP needs it - for example anyone working in a prison must not wear a watch with tracking or Bluetooth capability etc. You can apply for special permission but it's a PITA, so
in reality you just go get a cheap alternative for work!

There will be a Casio watch somewhere that fits the bill. I rather like the 80s or 90s looking watches. They are something a bit different to the imagination free flatscreen digi watches most people buy.

I came on to say Casio. I think they're really cool and I have done since about 1987.

But then I read about no fitbits or trackers in prison and and I want to ask why not.... I'm not doubting, just wondering what the logic is.

TheLocust · 10/12/2023 13:40

@weekfour maybe because they can be used to make phonecalls? @CornishPorsche ?

CornishPorsche · 10/12/2023 14:16

Yes, exactly that. They can be a huge issue if prisoners get hold of smart watches which can be used for illicit communication. Visitors are not allowed to wear any watches at all when they come to visit with a prisoner.

Also an issue for staff for two reasons - corruption eg they are bringing it in for a prisoner or their movements can be tracked around the prison for nefarious reasons and it also leaves them open to prisoners trying to get it off them through threats or violence.

Illicit communications are a huge problem.

But OP may be nothing to do with the prison system! Lots of other locked down / secure environments (research, some governmental departments, sneaky beaky in many different business areas) will have similar rules for different reasons.

I suppose that's very true. Thank you for the explanation. You learn something every day. Sometimes two weeks after the original post.

So OP. Did you get a watch? Let's have a look....
