Adult child “wow” gift

I always like to get a wow gift for my kids… but this tends to only be the younger ones still at home as the older got that as kids but now have lives of their own and get some cash and stocking/smaller gifts.
This year I have a wow gift in mind for one adult child but it’s nearly £500 and I’m wondering if it would be silly to get it? They couldn’t afford to get it themselves as single mum… they’d use it… but it is a luxury item very much so.
Thoughts much appreciated as I have a tendency to overthink and am driving myself bonkers here…

Ah, come on, you must know the rules. What's the gift?

An x box? An electric piano? A shark vacuum? A robo vac? A handbag?

Yep what is it! Can’t comment without knowing that!

I bought naked Wolff boots for my adult child - they ate £300 and a one off luxury. She has always wanted a pair , so I can’t wait to see her face!!!

Is she a struggling single mum or ok financially? If I was struggling I'd prefer the cash to ease the burden or put on the bills and a lower value gift.

Depends on what the gift is and what you mean by they would use it.

i would use a Dyson air wrap. But I don’t particularly want one because I don’t think it’s worth the money. I would be (outwardly) very appreciative but deep down I would be thinking, I wish they had spent that money on something else for me.

For other people it would be a wow gift.

I would use an expensive hoover but there would be no wow, if someone bought me one.

I love perfume. If you got me PFM Althair that would be completely wow for me and it’s half price that you are planning on spending. But I would be blown away.

If it's a super duper coffee machine then that's fine as nobody should have to drink shit coffee!! 😁

Joking aside, it depends what the gift it really

Do you have more than 1 adult child? If so you really shouldn't buy a big present for just one of them

fourelementary · 10/12/2023 08:19

It’s a Dyson AirWrap

More than one adult but they earn similar amount to me… but I’d give extra cash just not quite as much as the present. They wouldn’t mind at all.

dd manages fine with budgets and money but doesn’t treat herself ever… so this is the wow treat

Have a look on QVC for the Dyson. They often have offers or you can pay over a couple of months. And…you can send it back used if she doesn’t like it.

I would so love that as a treat! I suppose you could keep receipt and say you know it's a lot she's welcome to return for the money. Sometimes if someone is struggling for money it can feel like something like that is frivolous when the money could be better used on essentials etc?

So I would say, is her hair something she enjoys spending a lot of time on.

As a single parent does she have the time to spend on her hair. Which bits would she actually use? The hair dryer bit is meant to dry hair quicker. But curling and styling with it isn’t as quick as people think.

To make sure the curls last (as an example) you need to use lots of products and pin the curls or put the curls in rollers till they cool down. Does she have the time or inclination to do that.

or is this something that would sit in a cupboard that’s only used occasionally? Or something she uses everyday It also takes a little bit of practice to get the technique down.

I think treating her to something luxury is a lovely idea. As a single parent I think the idea is great. But this would be amazing for some people and not others. We don’t know her.

I think it's a lovely idea and you sound like such a kind mum. She's very lucky to have you!
