What Google says about Santa

I know what you’re all going to say, and that if they’re searching it then they already know. But my DD isn’t searching it, it’s other kids at school. If they just told her it said he doesn’t exist, she probably wouldn’t believe them. But they can use Google at school, and if they show her then she will probably believe and be gutted, because well it’s there in black and white. As I probably can’t stop that from happening, what can I say if she tells me that’s what she’s seen? I don’t want to tell her the truth at this point, so please don’t offer that as a suggestion.

If youre adamant that you'll not tell her, then use it as a "not everything you read online is true" lesson! Dont say he's real, obviously, but sidetrack into internet lies etc.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 04/12/2023 22:56

How old is she?

You say other children at school are googling it, has she told you this? So has she already seen the results of the googling?

Museum10661 · 04/12/2023 23:07

these days the common go to response is : Fake news

Lefthandwoman · 04/12/2023 23:31

"I still believe!"

All depends on how old she is really?

Santa ended up getting really clumsy here as didn't want ds still believing at secondary 😁

RiddlePiddle · 04/12/2023 23:32

She’s 7
No they haven’t Googled it yet, I just suspect they will judging by some other things that have been Googled and spread around the class.

Fake news then and you can't believe everything you read on the Internet etc followed with, I still believe!

If fox mulder was a real person thats pritty much what he would be saying at a guess,

I do remember it being a very stressful business that's for sure! Was quite glad when my youngest finally cottoned on, but I miss it now!

OzziePopPop · 05/12/2023 00:31

We went with ‘well some people don’t believe but I’ve always believed because Santa only comes if you believe so it’s a bit risky really not to. I wouldn’t want to risk not getting any presents after all!’ Kids decided believing was safer!

Lefthandwoman · 05/12/2023 00:35

Yeah, another good one!

RiddlePiddle · 05/12/2023 00:53

Yes that’s exactly along the lines of what I do say, so will continue. But Google saying no would ruin that!

I'd be more worried about that! Surely they are not googling unsupervised at the age of 7? My 9yo made a comment a few days ago about a slightly rudely named maths game he was too scared to click on, as the teacher checks their internet history after each use?

I honestly wouldn't worry about this though. At 7, even if they don't believe, they still want to a bit. I think they let a lot of very obvious spoilers slide.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/12/2023 11:26

I've just tried asking Alexa if Santa is real. Santa replies! Google gives you stuff about Saint Nicholas.

Just relax. Christmas magic is what you make of it.

idontlikealdi · 05/12/2023 13:09

It will happen anyway if the kids in her class have older siblings.

I've never told Dts he's not real, but they always knew the santas we went to see where helping out the 'real' one. They're nearly 13 and of course they know, we've just never really directly addressed it.

FrustratedMumofBoys · 05/12/2023 13:15

My 10 year old knew aged 6 as he has very little imagination (ASD) and sees everything in black and white. I told him that Santa IS real but not in the way we tell children. Young children don't understand things they can't see so we make Santa into a person but Santa is really about the joy of giving without recognition or thanks. He has since been involved in keeping the magic alive for my younger son. So he totally believes in the magic of Christmas despite knowing that the actual person is fictitious. My 7 year old asked a few weeks ago how Santa could possibly be real. I told him the same story but he totally didn't get it and said oh ok I'll write my letter then 🤷🏻‍♀️ so guess we've got a bit longer for him. I kinda hoped we could change things this year as we're away for Christmas and it's easier if they know as not so easy to hide presents etc now they're older.
