Something like Warhammer (to build and paint) but for a 6yo?

My 6yo has asked for some sort of model she can build and paint and start to collect for Christmas (looking enviously at her older brother’s Warhammer).

She doesn’t want to play games with rules with it, just to build and paint it and keep it on her shelf. She’s very good at painting even small things but would need it to be something that doesn’t involve all the pressing out and gluing of Warhammer. And ideally of course no gory or violent theme!

Does such a thing exist? I suggested Lego (which she already has some of) but she usually breaks that up to make new things, and of course she wouldn’t get to paint that. I can’t find anything else that seems to fit the bill.

Thanks very much for any ideas!

Airfix kits?

Catabogus · 03/12/2023 13:28

Ooh, thank you! I did wonder about Airfix, but aren’t they are bit tricky (and gluey!) for a 6yo?

Mould and paint kits are fun and come in lots of different designs, animals, Disney princesses, dinosaurs, whatever takes her fancy. They are simple to make ( just mix, pour and set) but she gets the fun of creating the model and then painting it!

I think they come with different levels of difficulty, eg https://www.amazon.co.uk/Airfix-A55006-Starter-Set-McLaren/dp/B0BT4RSYVK/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=airfix+kits+for+kids&qid=1701610341&sr=8-8

Ooh is this with plaster of Paris? I used to do these as a child and loved them. I’d forgotten all about it.

Yes, that’s the sort of thing! And it hardens overnight and you paint it. I’d forgotten all about these. Hours of fun as a small child.

How about a plaster of Paris mould and paint kit?

They do them in all sorts of designs, my DD (5) is getting a princess unicorn one.

Catabogus · 03/12/2023 13:36

Brilliant ideas - thank you!

Plaster of paris kits are good too, but she will need to be supervised with the model making due to the exothermic reaction.

I know you're probably looking for bigger but as a more stocking filler type I found one of these in a shop near me https://www.egmonttoys.com/en/products/wooden-push-up-dog-to-paint
I thought it was great!

Both my 6 year old and 8 year old daughters paint Warhammer.

My son does Dungeons and dragons figures- he’s in a club at school! The head of year 8 sounds like a very cool dude.

He’s 11 but his dexterity is probably the age of 8, he has dyspraxia.

Mad Factory Automata Kits
The mad factory do lots of wooden kits that move and can be painted (and interesting gifts).
I loved the plaster of Paris kits too at that age, a great suggestion!

My six year old has his own Warhammer, if you go into store they’ll give you one to paint for free, my husband gets the Warhammer magazine and it has models on that to build each week, why not just buy a copy of that or one of the small £19.50 sets if she wants Warhammer nothing else will compare!
