I'm completely stumped this year and I'd really like get my mum something special. I lost my dad earlier this year and I'd really like to get her something nice. My mum is in her 60's likes to read, she likes fiction books set in the past, she likes to dress nicely and like to have nice toiletries. I am however completely stumped! I have asked her but she keeps saying she doesn't want anything!

What's on your mums list or what have you bought your own mum?

I've sent boxes from Tea leaves and reads before www.tealeavesandreads.co.uk

But you could make up a box for her yourself with a book(s), sachets of her favourite tea/coffee, wee miniature of Baileys/wine/what she drinks, some nice biscuits and snacks. Could pop a nice throw in with it too.

A voucher for afternoon tea with you. Your time is probably very precious to her right now.

It’s difficult because it depends so much on what type of ‘in her 60s’ person she is. I’m 66 but I still work full time, don’t think of myself as ‘old’ and can afford to buy the things I want. If I was retired I’d probably appreciate different sorts of treats. Lovely things I’ve had recently and appreciated are a voucher for a facial at the salon I use, items of my preferred skin care range, seaweed eye masks, Victoria Beckham eyeliner pencils, refillable perfume atomiser for handbag, books, cashmere scarf, jewellery, cashmere dressing gown, theatre tickets. This year I’d like Birkenstock slippers, some bits from Lululemon, some Chalk earrings and I know I’m getting tickets to go to the ballet with my daughter after Christmas. I don’t want a hamper, speciality teas or an afternoon tea voucher, but you know your own Mum.

My mum is 65 and not old lady 60's she likes to dress well and likes beauty gifts but at the moment she's very much like what's the point in looking nice.

Thankyou for your replies there are some good ideas there

What’s your budget? Can you afford to take her away for a weekend? Holidays are very hard after losing a husband.

And I’m very sorry for your loss

I sometimes get my mum an antique or vintage ring from ebay - she’d never have thought to buy real jewellery for herself, and you can get amazing things for sub-£100.

Are you anywhere near a theatre. Sometimes time doing something really special is appreciated.. I have bought my mother really good theatre tickets to something I knew she would like to see. Even though the outing isn't until March she will look forward to seeing it and the time together. Special lunch/afternoon tea on its own or with cinema tickets have also worked in the past.. or those special shows at cinema where you watch a theatre production live on the big screen. Have seen some great London shows at local cinema that way.

wee miniature of Baileys/wine/what she drinks,

Seriously? Why the jeff wouldn’t one buy her a full size bottle? Or better still, a case?

If you’re going down the beauty route, something from Hermes or Gucci would be gorgeous.

Books? I’m sure she’s open to more than just historical fiction? Why not as many of the Booker shortlist as you can manage?

Clothes are harder. I’m in my 60s - and my clothes are beyond all but the fondest gifting budgets. And I prefer to choose for myself, anyway. Is there a particular designer or shop she favours? You probably could find something suitable if you put your mind to it …

In almost the exact circumstances last year I got my mum a flower subscription (Arena flowers) and a lovely bouquet delivered regularly was well received! I also bought her a super luxurious sheepskin wool hot water bottle cover from Ciora Scotland too.

mumonthehill · 03/12/2023 19:15

Book subscription would be good. Fabulous beauty box, I have got my mum one.

I take my mum away on holiday every year in the U.K.….I let her choose from her bucket list of places…..she’s 87

I've gone with a special gift of a visit to the phantom of the opera in London.
I don't think soaps/perfumes/socks are always 'special enough' sometimes.
She asked me for a 'bed jacket' I let know her I had already gotten her gift and she tutted. I said when you open it, let me know if you want to swap it for a bed jacket Hmm I've got her a few small bits like hand cream so I'm planning on when she opens that, to say 'see would you want to swap that for a bed jacket!?'

I've seen some beautiful hampers from Fortum & Mason so I'll probably do that next year.

Thankyou all for the lovely suggestions! I'm going to look into some of them.

I just feel like I need to get her something different to usual
