Eldery dads

I am stuck for my dads this year and it's quite a tight criteria

They live abroad and neither speak nor read a great deal of English so books are out.

As they live abroad electronics are also out.

Dad 1 in his early 80s
Likes reading
in the last year has lost a lot of his mobility so where before he would go on long walks he is no longer able to. Can barely make it to the supermarket across the road and has home help and food support. His appetite has gone down over the years and while before he was a big foodie these days most rich foods give him stomach pains. And he is not very adventurous. (this is the man who ran half marathons for "fun" in his 60s and went interrailing with his late wife in their 60s)
he does not appreciate photos and has very few of them out. Will get a calendar from our brother as that is his yearly present from bro.
Niece buys him slippers
Sister is as lost as I am as to what to get him but at least can buy him Danish books
He is particular about his clothing so clothes are out
He does not appreciate expensive toiletries. Likes his particular one and doesn't want it purchased for him It's also nothing special similar to Old Spice.

In the last few years, I have bought him
Reading light
blanket
gloves
hat
Book mark
photos (they are received with thanks but put away his decorating style is minimalist and he is ocd re tidying)

Dad no 2 (stepdad)
Hunter, fisher and active life. Doesn't read much but will read stuff of interest.

He enjoys tinkering in his garage but his tools are WAY above the sort of budget I can afford (he has thousands of pounds in tools)
He is an odd clothing and shoe size so I struggle to get this right. Thought he would appreciate clothing I would not know where to start with this. (and hard to exchange as again he is abroad)
He does enjoy photos but his and my late mother's home is covered in photos of their loved ones. We gave him a multi-picture photo frame for his 70th birthday of us and the kids and this was up the next day .. I honestly can't see where the photo would go through.
He is also spending his first Christmas with his "not girlfriend" (she is just a woman He likes spending time with😂 )
Will also get a calendar from bro. he would not wear slippers (says they annoy him and also he doesn't sit still long enough to need slippers)

Over the years he has had similar to dad above but also photos in all shapes and forms including a jigsaw. I've given him hand warmers for when out hunting, and flasks for when out
When asked what he would like he said and I quote
"Idk Enko can't you just work something out please?"

Help...

Will add dad no 1 would not like audio books so not a possibility. He does have a kindle type device but doesn't like it says it annoys his eyes.

Winter plants? Poinsettia or similar? Or bulbs maybe?

Just thinking they are nice for indoors but don't last forever.

Danish books seems to be the obvious one for Dad1.

Enko · 03/12/2023 11:13

Danish books may seem obvious but it's near impossible to get for him from the UK and while my sister would if I asked her she already has a lot on her plate and I don't want to add to that (bro too far away to help there) He can not get the shops if I send a gift voucher.

I would not know what to give him he reads at least 6 books a month. (he is great for recommendations though I will give him that he reads widely and not a narrow genre) If I get completely stuck I may speak with niece about this though. .

Plants.. They will have what they want as plants are a big thing in Denmark. I wouldn't dare with Dad no 2 his garden is huge I should have added "gardener" to his description.

Lightweight binoculars and a bird watching/astronomy book?
Magnifying glass with LED light on a stand?
Model making kit, like adult Lego or like this below, lots to chose from on an internet search.

Go consumable? Food, good coffee, Bird and Blend tea, meal out vouchers?

And considering having a frank exchange - I feel like you have pretty much everything you need and unless you can give me some ideas, I'm going to keep it simple this year, and also, please do keep our presents simple too.

TomatoSandwiches · 03/12/2023 11:31

Hankerchiefs, thermal socks and book of crosswords/sudoku.
Liquorice, mixed types, hard boiled sweets in a jar.

Fishing lures/lure box, wood knife for whittling? Waterproof socks/sealskins, head lamp for night fishing, a crystal cut Whiskey glass and or a nice bottle of Port.

Enko · 03/12/2023 11:43

Handkerchiefs are not a bad idea for dad no 1. @TomatoSandwiches

@StarryAnise cancelling is not a possibility nor is reducing and it is not something I would want to do either. I would actually like to get these two men whom I love dearly something they would appreciate. I know that is hugely unusual in the Uk and it's far more normal to say " stuff it" but that is not what I wish to do. Both men also give generous presents for their grandchildren and us siblings. They are simply both stuck on stuff for themselves. As they are in their 70s and 80s they won't be around much longer and I do not have many left to buy presents for. I have those two and dh and my children that is it. I would love to find them something they would enjoy.

@FadedRed I am in 2 minds over that puzzle thing A part of me things dad 2 would love it another is unsure. Ive sent it to dd3 to decide as she lived near him for a year and has a really good idea of what he likes.

Dad No. 2 clothing that doesn't have to fit - really lovely hat, scarf and gloves?

GenialHarryGr0ut · 03/12/2023 11:56

Dad No. 2.
If he spends a lot of time standing in his garage tinkering an anti fatigue mat for the floor?

Funderthighs · 03/12/2023 12:02

Christmas scented room diffuser, mug, engraved/personalised glass, Christmas tie/socks, pyjamas, something alcoholic, luxury hot chocolate, cushion, throw, fun doormat, nice tea/coffee/biscuit selection?

TryAgainWithFeeling · 03/12/2023 12:05

Might not be in budget, but how about one of those plug in photo frames which you can update remotely - so you and any other family can send photos directly and it’ll scroll through them. Nice for family overseas. Single item which might fit in both houses!

Really good socks?

Also following for ideas, was going to get my ddad an Audible sub, but Spotify (un)helpfully added audio books to premium and with those plus podcasts, his listening time is all used up ...

On which note - would either of your dads appreciate a Spotify premium or similar music subscription? My dad loves his & uses it all the time (which at least means birthdays are sorted).

Enko · 03/12/2023 12:21

@TryAgainWithFeeling dad no 1 has one and dad no 2 doesn't like them. He is a bit more old-fashioned with that sort of stuff. Also as they are not in the UK I can't buy them for them and online shopping in DK is a pain to sort from overseas. So I tend to buy here and post.

Amazon do Danish books
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Literature-Fiction-Danish-Books/s?rh=n%3A62%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A405246011

A bottle of really nice whisky?

Music? Nice vinyl records? A dab radio?

Nonplusultra · 03/12/2023 12:46

Heated gillets. Dont have to be a perfect fit. Dad 1 is probably feeling the cold more as his mobility decreases. Dad2 will appreciate it when hunting.

Snowflake760 · 03/12/2023 13:03

Dad presents : leatherman multi tool (check postage rules as its a blade) , trail cam for seeing what’s going on in the garden after dark) , weather station, magazine subscription , coffee subscription, fleecy neck buff for cold weather.
