TooManyPlatesInMotion · 01/12/2023 20:38

Hi - my DC (Reception and Y2) would like to make their teachers and TAs a little Xmas gift (4 gifts to make in total).

I am hopeless at this stuff. Any ideas or inspiration?! Ideally a kit as i have zero skills in this department!

Thanks.

How about a little tree decoration? Can be as simple or complicated as you want.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 01/12/2023 20:52

They could just make a card. It’s always lovely to receive one made by the children.

Or you could get them to make an origami box and put a couple of chocs in each one. Really don’t spend a lot!

Phineyj · 01/12/2023 20:56

How about bookmarks? My 10 year old likes to make the kind that slot onto the corners of the pages and they're actually quite useful! YouTube tutorials will show how to fold them.

Or good old fashioned strips of card with a fringe cut at the end.

Write "You're my favourite teacher/TA because..." on and job's a good-un.

I'm a teacher. Love stuff like that. Even from year 11 😂.

ShipshapeShore · 01/12/2023 20:57

A bookmark would be nice. Get some card, colouring pens and maybe some some stick on gems or sequins and you're away!

ShipshapeShore · 01/12/2023 20:57

@Phineyj great minds and all that 😆

Christmas tree decorations are a great idea. Hobbycraft sell those card ones (in bauble shapes plus loads of other designs) - just give the kids paint / tissue paper / glue / glitter etc and let them get on with it! When finished you could write something on them in Sharpie if you wanted to.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 01/12/2023 21:04

What would THEY like to make?

if you want kits hobbycraft usually have inexpensive easy ones or Christmas shapes you can paint etc.

I just tried to explain how to make simple tree decorations but it was too complicated, best to Google making Christmas tree decorations!! Making Christmas cards etc but hobby craft do sell loads of precut shapes in felt etc. cheap & easy!!

Thanks for the inspiration!!

My elder daughter has suggested decorating a paper wreath, which I think we can manage....

Love the idea of bookmarks!

I've had some lovely handmade things over the years. The most thoughtful include

  • edibles (fudge, cookies, lemon curd)
  • Christmas tree decorations ( they go on my classroom tree every year)
  • handmade card with a written message inside
  • book mark
  • Hama bead magnet

Hot chocolate stirrers! That is what we are making for my 4 year old's preschool teachers. Chocolate, marshmallows and disposable wooden spoon in a mould and left to set, wrapped nicely.

Nothing edible. It will honestly just be binned.

Something small and useable like a bookmark is perfect, or just a handwritten card. They are kept forever.

twirlywoop · 02/12/2023 08:01

Just make them a card or a bookmark. Something that can be thrown away easily. Remember they get like 30 of these things a year

maldivemoment · 02/12/2023 08:07

@twirlywoop 😆
Thats the spirit! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Well there's nothing worse than getting something a child has out hours of effort into and then you're faced with the dilemma of chucking it away

Multipleexclamationmarks · 02/12/2023 08:15

Pen holder. Empty jam jar with a bit of ribbon tied round it, they can draw a picture on in glass markers.

Combusting · 02/12/2023 08:16

Home made edibles made by children who you see being grubby day in day out - at school - making said edibles in kitchens and homes you’ve got no idea of = Bin.

Please don’t.

mondaytosunday · 02/12/2023 08:19

We used to make peppermint creams dipped in chocolate. Or fudge..

thepresureofausername · 02/12/2023 08:22

I still have a key chain that says 'best teacher' and my name, from someone in my first class 20 years ago. Made from beads on a ribbon.
Must have been very simple and cheap to make but I love it.

user1492757084 · 02/12/2023 08:36

Can you make Christmas biscuits with a hole in them? Thread ribbon through for the Christmas tree.

Make a bookmark or a card each. Write the letters of the name of the teacher and ask your children to think of one positive thing about that teacher that starts with each letter.

Make a card and personalise each card by having your child write their favourite thing (or funniest thing) about that teacher or class this year.

Child draws a portrait of teacher.
.
Buy small pot each (or use recyled cut off soft drink bottles) and plant a herb in each - Basil, Mint, Rosemary, Thyme.

Or give plants for teacher to plant in their garden - like Nasturtiums, Coss lettuce, Geraniums, Sea Side Daisy etc

Phineyj · 02/12/2023 08:38

I've said this on here before but I have kept my favourite ever gift from about 6 years ago: a kilner jar filled with scraps of marbled paper on which students had written personal messages such as "Miss, I enjoyed your lessons. Even though I didn't do any work." 😀

anon2134 · 02/12/2023 09:39

I used to hand in home made gifts years ago but the amount of threads I've read over the years of teachers dumping home made gifts I stopped.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 02/12/2023 19:29

@Phineyj that is an awesome present!!
