Help me with a gift for DSs GF

LarkaSwyft · 30/11/2023 18:12

My DS has a relatively new GF, they started dating in August but it's got quite intense quite fast. She won't be spending Christmas with us as she is going to her family in Canada. However my parents have organised a bit of a gift exchange and lunch out the Sunday before as they also are going away for Christmas. My parents, my brother and his kids and my husband and I and our two sons will be there.
DS has asked if he can bring his girlfriend and we've all said yes but now myself, my sister in law and my mum are all struggling to know what to get.

My mum and sister in law have set budget at £50, I've set mine closer to £100.
She is 19, studies fashion management and marketing. DS says she's a bit of a minimalist doesn't like being overwhelmed by choice. She is also very well off, so she wants for nothing. Apparently she loves sustainability and hates waste and doesn't really drink at home or eat much chocolate etc.!!

I'm thinking she's impossible to buy for !!
My son is getting her tickets to see a show in Brussels in march, plus some things he knows she wants to unwrap. He's said he has used all his ideas and she wont care if we don't get her anything.
My mum and sister in law are saying they will get her something and can't just not get anything. I feel the same.
We try to avoid vouchers and money (especially as money is no object to her I think £50 in a card would mean very little to her).
I'm totally lost on what to get and what to suggest to my family to get her. She's a lovely girl and I want her to feel welcome in the family.

Any ideas for a 19 year old sustainable fashion advocate who has everything and wants for nothing?

For tea you could get a nice gift set from fortnum and mason.

Would also recommend a vegan scented candle - perfect gift for women you don’t know very well

I'd also get your DS to do a bit more leg work - have a nosy at what brands of toiletries, perfume, make up she wears and let you know. My family think I'm fussy about what I put on my face - but it's mostly that my mum would be outraged about what I spend on skin care, and I favour make up brands that she would find a bit pricey. If you know what she uses, might help find something that would work as a gift.

Is she into exercise or fitness? Something from lululemon or sweaty Betty?

Just messaged him asking to have a nosey in the bathroom cupboards and see what he can tell us!! Hes just said "I'll look now but I swear it's all French or something, she's at the gym".

I'll get back with a list ... if he gives one.

I'm useless with skincare and make up not a clue (so glad I had boys!!)

😂😂 @LarkaSwyft

But if she's a gym goer, that's opens up options too!

Ohhh goodness I feel worse off having received the list. I'll just copy his message in

⁃	La Mer
⁃	Augustinus Bader
⁃	Elemis
⁃	Dior
⁃	Aesop
⁃	Biologique Recherche
⁃	Dr Barbara Strum
⁃	Chanel
⁃	Armani

There’s more in the make up drawers so if you need me to look let me know. She really won’t care if you don’t get her anything she isn’t like that.

I'll be honest I haven't heard of most of those ... eek. Quite proud of him for actually looking though 🤣

She does go to the gym but I'm not sure if it's a frequent thing.

elemis have lots of nice gift sets in your price range

hby9628 · 30/11/2023 20:08

If your budget is close to £100 you could easily afford a nice perfume from one of those brand
Elemis isn't too pricey if you find an offer...I would expect there will be gift sets available at this time of year

How about vouchers to a nice cinema? Near me we have the Everyman which feels like a real treat to visit as you can get food & drinks too
Neom stuff is lovely. I don't think you can go wrong with that or Jo Malone bath oil smells divine.
Oh one more! It's a moisturiser that I was given as a gift...I would never have spent this much myself but it is amazing. The smell lasts for ages so I would recommend definitely

www.aesop.com/uk/c/kits-travel/gift-kits/

uk.elemis.com/elemis-x-vieve.html lots of other options

www.lauramercier.co.uk/products/ambre-vanille-honey-bath?variant=44611312156968 (really nice too, out of stock but try John Lewis etc.)

Neom stuff is lovely, would suit someone who likes those kind of brands.

As she gets her nails done, a hand cream from one of those brands could work well?

PieAndLattes · 30/11/2023 20:22

A neutral Chanel lipstick or lipgloss and a nail polish or mascara. Alpaca socks. A plant or something like a bay tree if she lives in a house. Window sill herb box. A really good hair brush. A fancy hair clasp. A Le Crueset / Chillies water bottle. A Hot Diamonds necklace (they’re really minimalist and come in at around £70-£100). Russell and Bromley slippers. A Rituals dressing gown, silk pyjamas.

jocktamsonsbairn · 30/11/2023 20:36

Sounds like she dies a fair bit of travelling - what about a lovely jewellery roll, packing cubes or really nice toiletry bag?

caringcarer · 30/11/2023 21:06

I'm getting my DS's gf
Dior Hypnotic Poison Eau de Toilette (her favourite)
Turtle doves fingerless wrist warmers.
Cats jigsaw puzzle
Bottle pink Prosecco
Lego flower bouquet
Lindor chocolates
Wash bag and hand made vanilla soap
Large pack of Love Heart sweets with personalised name label.
Faceasks
Chocolate orange

For her birthday at the beginning of January I have her a 9 carat gold garnet necklace.

DS has been going out with her for 2 years. I love her to pieces and hope she will one day become my Daughter in Law. She doesn't have a lot of money and spends what she has on her DD. She is a great Mum.

Do you know the gf favourite perfume?

caringcarer · 30/11/2023 21:09

Dior perfume is about £100 OP. Which type? Your son will need to be specific. Miss Dior, Roses n Roses, Hypnotic Poison, Poison, the list goes on.

Aww that's a lovely set of gifts!!

I don't think we could budget her perfume in as this is one of the first things we asked he said
Kilian Good Girl Gone Bad
Maison Frances Bacarat Rouge
I think they are both the £200 range or up which is insane to me!!

OP posts:
feliciabirthgiver · 30/11/2023 21:40

Ah you can get Baccarat Rouge body lotion, soap, bath oil, hair mist, I am sure that would be a lovely present the prices range from £45-£95 for the bath and body collection www.franciskurkdjian.com/int-en/DiscoverAllBathandBody.html

Also as mentioned up threat Bird and Blend Tea's are fabulous.

pinkyh · 30/11/2023 21:46

I have a few similar friends & trust me you can't go wrong with a Diptyque candle.

mcmen05 · 30/11/2023 22:03

Jewellery
Hat Scarf Gloves
I would not be making a difference in what you buy your other ds gf as it will make her think because the other girl has money she gets better quality gift. Get both the same like not matching but get hers pjs instead of oodie..
I normally bought my dd1 bf loads but this year dd2 also has a bf soi won't be doing as much.

Clemmie4 · 01/12/2023 01:01

I second all the sets that WhatWouldTheDoctorDo has linked to above. They are perfect, high quality brands you know she already uses, fit in with the information from your son.
Just one high end set using the full budget rather than 2/3 mid range.

I wouldn’t even consider giving a fashion student any clothing items or jewellery.
Plus your son has mentioned she doesn’t care for clutter so that would rule out several other suggestions.

LarkaSwyft · 01/12/2023 01:06

Thanks everyone.

My parents are sorted now they have got her this tea and these gloves

https://www.nearlynewcashmere.co.uk/collections/second-hand-cashmere-accessories/products/new-scottish-cream-cashmere-gloves-1

https://www.fortnumandmason.com/fruit-scented-tea-selection-40-tea-bags?gadsource=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAgqGrBhDtARIsAM5s00m0yjZBFO4bNcDpWKBrUKN0oub85qqgAJVkJnXS-Qu8Y01l3rtrkfMaAgVNEALwwcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Brother and Sister in Law are also sorted as DS had a revolution and sent me towards things she'd like as they were going to bed

A pillow spray and some silk scrunchies

Just us left, I'm thinking maybe this hand care set

https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/The-Art-of-Hand-Care-Travel-Set-3-x-30ml-R406882006.html?utmterm=406882006&gaddsource=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD4IbFEgaE8v85yQ6XvPrBMC-9Arb&gclid=Cj0KCQiAgqGrBhDtARIsAM5s0lDQCbLq1r9UMBqbwsfQqxtdN5BG3vx2ANuC1RNJXFif41KSifgv48aAtL9EALwwwcB

But no idea what else yet. Maybe a silk eye mask as she travels a fair bit and a candle?

OP posts:
Thyme80 · 01/12/2023 01:09

Aesop shower gel, diptyque candle, Stanley cup (in neutral tones) ?

LarkaSwyft · 01/12/2023 01:09

LarkaSwyft · 01/12/2023 01:06

Ohhh or alternatively she uses the hair mists? That go with her perfumes (only know as DH made a joke about her putting perfume in her hair when we met her 🤣), they are about £95 I think so could just do one of those? I'd just feel bad if she was opening less than everyone else.
I'm not worried about her stuff being "higher quality" than our other son's gf. She lives with us and asked for the items specifically, so I feel like I'm just getting them both what they'd like.

RainyonaSummersDay · 01/12/2023 01:13

The very first year DS and his GF were together I bought a really nice make up brush that was an eco bamboo one and a set of pyjamas of something she likes, think favourite animal. I spent about £50.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 01/12/2023 01:54

Nrtft but avoid anything personal ( toiletries/cosmetics) if you don’t know her very well. Someone very into sustainability is going to be very particular.

Id probably personally look at a nice voucher for afternoon tea somewhere rural, maybe a heritage experience given she’s not from the uk.

Could you look for something local that’s a bit different, I’d probably post for help on local groups. Close to us there is a glass blowing company that dose amazing work, very out of the box, I’d look at something less consumeristic like this.

AnonymousMessage · 01/12/2023 04:08

PJs from the white company?
