Luxury dark chocolate

Fil is diabetic and hasn’t eaten any type of sweets or treats for months, and can’t bear the taste of artificial sweeteners. He’s said that he’d like a small amount of dark chocolate for Christmas Day instead of pudding. Any recommendations for a particularly nice brand?

I’d ask him. If he’s not eaten any sweets for that amount of time you want to make sure he enjoys it. My mum is only allowed dark chocolate occasionally for diabetic reasons and she only eats bournville as it has the sweet taste she craves. Some dark chocolate can have no sugar at all or can have such a high cocoa level its really only for people who get to eat other things to fulfill their sweet tooth.

Charbonnel et Walker truffles

IggyAce · 29/11/2023 20:02

Im type 2 and occasionally have dark chocolate usually 85%, hotel chocolate batons are lovely as is moser Roth from Aldi. The advantage of the Aldi one is that it’s 5 small bar, great for portion control.

Defiantlynot41 · 29/11/2023 20:25

Bournville has loads of sugar in it! 60% (60g of sugar per 100g of chocolate)

Hotel Chocolat 85% batons or bars (22g of sugar/100g) - Hotel Chocolat used to do a "less sugar" box which was excellent but sadly discontinued), their 90% or 100% have even less sugar
Waitrose No 1 90% Ecuador 22g/100g
Green & Blacks 85% 24g/100g
Tesco own brand 85% is surprisingly acceptable and very similar to Lindt 85% 22g/100g

AdoraBell · 29/11/2023 20:28

I’ve had Waitrose No 1 chocolate, not diabetic but I like dark chocolate, it is good.

Defiantlynot41 · 29/11/2023 20:59

I am a T1 diabetic if you want to attempt a proper pud, this is my go- to www.kristeninlondon.com/desserts/delias-chocolate-mousse

Made with any of the 85% cocoa chocolates recommended in my post, it works out at under 15g of carb, topped with some whipped double cream its delicious

Mirrormeback · 29/11/2023 21:24

My dad likes Greene and Blacks dark chocolate

Morechocmorechoc · 29/11/2023 21:25

Waitrose no1 bars or hotel choc batons.

Mrsjayy · 29/11/2023 21:29

Dark chocolate is my Favourite and apart from Bournville the next 1 I like is green and Black's its delicious but you only need a little bit,

Nonplusultra · 30/11/2023 15:02

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Loving the chocolate penguin @GetYourBaublesOut
I do t think he has a clue himself @KittyKingdom it was a bit of an off the cuff suggestion. But there’s a good chance he’s thinking along the lines of bournville and not realising how sugary it actually is.
@Defiantlynot41 very helpful thank you. And one that mousse looks amazing. It’s rare to get a really good mousse that hasn’t been over sweetened. I might have to make that for myself.

This ^ the Aldi brand is good, I like Lidl very dark chocolate as it’s smooth

handmademitlove · 30/11/2023 16:59

Lidl do a 70% dark chocolate with raspberry - around 3.6g sugar per square. It is my new favourite!

Bournville has more sugar in it than dairy milk 😂 that's not the right kind of dark chocolate for a diabetic!

MujeresLibres · 30/11/2023 17:20

Divine dark chocolate is my favourite. I have type 1.

A good tip with diabetes is pairing food - so sugar and carbs paired with protein / fat.

I get on really well with dark chocolate with nuts in for that reason.

He might not want that as a treat, but it’s very tasty and slightly better for sugar levels. Lindt do a nice one.

KittyKingdom · 01/12/2023 18:31

I didn’t say she should buy bournville I said she should check what he thinks is a nice dark chocolate as some are so low in sugar or high in cocoa that they are no longer a treat to some people. I gave my mother who has fallen into this trap as an example. Try reading and there is no one who will tell my mother what to do especially not with a condition that took several of her friends out years ago. I did mention your comment to her today though and she laughed at you and said that these guidelines were brought to her attention before any of us were even born and that they didn’t have any of these fancy dark chocolates back then and they were still advising that you could have them. She told me to tell you to put that in your pipe and smoke it. My Mother is amazing and will live forever.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 01/12/2023 18:37

Maybe look at pure heavenly. They are low sugar

Not sure what's funny about pointing out the truth that Bournville is very high in sugar, but glad it gave your mum a laugh.

We take diabetes a bit more seriously in this household.
