Stocking fillers - 60ish woman

AuntMarch · 28/11/2023 16:24

Not one for stuff- sees ornaments as clutter and tries to limit waste.

Any useful little bits and bobs anyone recommends?

so far; trolley token, one of those packaway shopping bags and a lip balm. Not a very filled stocking!

Perishables. Olive oil, coffee, tea, chocolates, little baileys bottle.

MissyB1 · 28/11/2023 16:33

Christmassy scented soap bar
Christmassy hand cream
lovely chocs / sweets

AutumnCrow · 28/11/2023 16:48

I've hit 60, and I'm a woman. Yay.

I would like to be given some chocolate - Lindt orange would be great - and some tomato seeds for the spring.

I need a new mouse mat and/or soup mug, and I'd quite like one with an ancient family photo on it. Failing that, a still from the Erasure video for Sometimes or Respect or a poster from the 1980s.

Whiskey/whisky, a lemon and ethical honey.

I do not want or need a 'lovely scarf' or stuff for the bath. I'd probably come out in hives Grin

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 28/11/2023 17:15

Very politely, if she hates waste and doesn't want to buy stuff for the sake if it what is the reasoning behind getting a stocking ? Wouldn't this be contrary to her values trying to find something to buy to put in it ?

given her views I would suggest consumables that you know she actually enjoys as your view if a treat might not be hers :)

sixteenfurryfeet · 28/11/2023 17:22

Speaking as a 60ish woman... not soap, candles, gloves or a scarf! Aaarghh!!!!

Vanilla pods would be nice, or some saffron. I also quite like those pepper grinders with all different-coloured peppercorns in them. Also lemon-flavoured olive oil. After Eights or some other minty chocolate perhaps. A kitchen gadget like really good quality poultry shears maybe.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/11/2023 17:41

I am 61. I like candles but not bath products although hand cream is acceptable. I never use lip balm but I like eye shadow and lipstick. I also love socks. A small card holder would be welcome but not a massive purse. Hope this is helpful.

Funderthighs · 28/11/2023 17:58

Nail varnish, a Starbucks/Costa voucher, something nice from Hotel Chocolat?

She puts a lot of thought into doing it for others, so I'd really like to do the same for her.
I won't take any ideas that I don't genuinely think would be enjoyed or useful, but if I can put something together I know she'd love then I'd be very happy! I think I'd recognise what she'd appreciate when I heard/read it, if that makes sense, so just wanted to reach out to the hive mind.

Thank you. I couldn't do make up, I don't wear it myself so wouldn't dare attempt to pick colours for someone else! But handcream and a nice pair of socks are both going on the list!

Consumables - good olive oil or balsamic vinegar, nice mustard if she likes it, onion chutney, posh biscuits.

WineThirty · 28/11/2023 18:31

A box of M&S milk choc florentines. That is my favourite Christmas treat. My mum sends me a M&S hamper every year and there is always a box in it and this is the best item. Not sure why i never think to add them to my normal ocado order though!

Leeds2 · 28/11/2023 18:49

A scratch card.
Crossword/suduko book.
Book of stamps.
Paperback.
Magazine.

SoddingWeddings · 28/11/2023 19:04

I do things like a toothbrush and toothpaste because mum used to do that to us 😂.

Chocolate orange in the toe. Chocolate coins. Body wash or bath oil. Nice soap. A facecloth. Teatowels. Socks.

GoodVibesHere · 28/11/2023 19:06

Fluffy socks

Minniebojangles · 28/11/2023 19:18

I am 60 and recent Christmas stocking s have included Christmas book, face mask, lip gloss, flavoured coffee, Costa card, choc orange, miniature alcohol, fingerless gloves and a m&s blueberry muffin.

BlueFlyStinking · 29/11/2023 00:37

Does she garden? A big ball of garden twine. You can get ones like giant cotton reels which are cool with a pair of snips which slot in the hole. Gardening gloves, hand cream, seeds, labels - maybe attractive copper or zinc ones, a dibber, birdseed, a small houseplant you could have poking or trailing leaves out of the top of the stocking.

Redskyatwhatever · 29/11/2023 02:20

Nice quality notebook or diary, photo lens cloth or a neck cord if she wears glasses. Favourite edibles or an upgrade to normal purchases like some biscuits from Fortnum and Mason. Something small but practical like a manicure set. Costa/Starbucks or similar card. Small item for a hobby or interest. Tiny handbag umbrella. Lottery ticket

mathanxiety · 29/11/2023 02:31

I'm not quite 60 but I'd like nice quality chocolate, nice quality coffee, nice bottle of wine. Maybe a pair of nice gloves or a nice hand lotion.

No to sudoku /crossword puzzles / book of stamps.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 08:39

I think a book stamps would make sense if accompanying a pack of creative/arty postcards from a gallery, museum etc. I do like sending the odd postcard with birthday wishes etc to some of my friends. But perhaps I am strange.

If she wears reading glasses thin optics do thin glasses that fold up into a key ring, or fit in a case that sticks to the back of a phone. Everyone I’ve given them to as gifts raves about them. Google to find a more local supplier though.

Bookaroo do a range of notebook accessories - pen/glasses holders and tech organisers - that might be nice if she’s a notebook kind of person.

I also like these bookmark/pens

A glass nailfile is one of those items that you don’t see the point of until you try it and then you’ll never go back.

perfume travel atomiser is really handy.

A slim folding phone charger - I’ve just picked this at random to show what I mean. I got one for dh last year for travelling that was appreciated.

Lindt crispy bites (that might just be me though)

I'm 61. I can never have too many books, notebooks, pens, earrings, nail varnish. Bar Soap is good, candles can be good. Nice socks are great. I have my eye on the Turtle Doves cashmere wrist warmers that everyone raves about. I like a new tree decoration. I live beads.

OMGitsnotgood · 29/11/2023 16:56

Obviously don't know your friend's tastes, but am a similar age.

I second the Leighton Denny glass nail file, absolutely fabulous. M&S used to stock them.

I like to have a set of lovely notecards, I still like to write thank you notes for gifts etc.

I'm also an avid list maker, I use a pretty hard backed notebook from Paperchase. TK Maxx usually have good ones (and notecards).

One of my favourite stocking fillers was a variety of herb seeds, much cheaper than shop bought.

I never used to use hand cream but do so now my hands are aging rapidly!

DelphiniumBlue · 29/11/2023 17:09

Body butter from the Body shop, BurtsBees tinted lip balm, New Kings coffee bags, a nut selection box, paint pens ( great for labelling plastic/glass/stone), silver earrings ( loads on Notonthehighstreet for well under a tenner), minature prosecco or Frexinet, or a can of premixed cocktail, books. Turtle Doves wristwarmers are so cosy and also reduced at the moment.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 30/11/2023 06:21

I'm in that age group - I second (or third!) the Leighton Denny glass nail file - I've had one for years and it's brilliant.

I'd appreciate nice chocolates, the M&S Florentines mentioned by a PP, a mini pannetone, nail polish, hand cream (L'Occitane do small versions of their large tubes), lovely bar soap (L'Occitane again) ... Someone bought me a gorgeous notebook from Waterstones one year, so something like that - I love writing lists!

I, personally, wouldn't want alcohol, anything wool/cashmere (I'm allergic), coffee/chutney/mustard (or other foodie stuff) or scarves/jewellery.
