Hi all,

Would love some help for ideas for my mum - she is pretty tricky to buy for

DOES NOT LIKE

  • any beauty products
  • any soap or shower products or similar
  • food gifts
  • items of clothing
  • vouchers or experience
  • candles
  • practical homeware gifts (cushions, kitchen equipment)
  • funny novelty gifts

LIKES:

  • crosswords and word games (but has already got all the presents related to this I can think of)
  • rhubarb
  • going to the gym, cycling, yoga (but does not want any clothes associated with this)
  • iPad (not tech savvy though and has headphones)

please help, any ideas gratefully received

House or garden plants, rhubarb gin, app that shows how far youve cycled/calories/hills etc, calming music for yoga, bell for meditation, outdoor fairy lights, escape room puzzle based on codes, word puzzles. She sounds very hard to buy for OP. Good luck.

New leather bike saddle?

Fancier yoga mat than she currently owns?

New yoga class that she hasn’t tried before?

Yoga weekend away. (Longer or shorter depending on your budget.)

Cycling might be the low hanging fruit here. Plenty to buy (mostly expensive, though). What's your budget?

Garmin bike radar (depending on the kind of riding she does)?

Ormally · 27/11/2023 17:18

A book called 'Traffic Free Cycle Trails'.
There is a restaurant called Rhubarb, I think - perhaps more than one. They use rhubarb grown at the estate a lot!

Dizzydials · 27/11/2023 17:19

Fancy pen

coffeeplease16 · 27/11/2023 17:21

Thanks there are some good ideas here - I might explore Rhubarb for the next big birthday.

I’d like at least something she can unwrap on the day! Budget is not defined, anything from £10 to maybe -£200

I like the ideal of the saddle. She’s more of a cycle to an appointment rather than a long distance cyclist.

A book about one or more of her interests? Or just some fiction if she reads novels (you don't list it in her hates).

Has she anywhere to grow rhubarb? If so what about some seeds? Or a thing for forcing rhubarb - I think you call it a cloche?

DelphiniumBlue · 27/11/2023 17:25

An iPad holder or cushion so she can have it propped up to read in comfort? A very nice mug of exactly the shape and size she likes? Quick dry towels for sports? A book - maybe prize nominees?

Flintwhistle · 27/11/2023 17:32

Have you asked her? If the list of things she doesn't like is that long, does she actually want a present?

coffeeplease16 · 27/11/2023 17:35

Yes that’s just how she is, she doesn’t like any of the things listed rather than her being difficult!

I love the rhubarb cloche and will be buying - thank you @Ilovelurchers still on the lookout for something more

Oakley EvZero photochromic sunglasses, change colour in this adaptable light we're having. You have to check the size to get the right one for a woman's face.

AlaskanSnow · 27/11/2023 17:37

Have you given her Murdle? I've got that for my hard to buy for SIL

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/11/2023 17:42

Neoprene cycling overshoes

There's a lovely series of books of walking/cycling's guides called "The Lost Lanes of..." - there are editions for The North, Wales and the West Country. One of them?

Panniers/Saddle bag/bar bag (Ortlieb are the top end of bike luggage)

Kindle?

Lots of bike accessories here

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/11/2023 17:47

Merino wool neck gaiter
Or merino wool socks, or baselayers (Howies are good).

I really like the sound of your mum by the way!

Rhubarb gin

Inextremis · 27/11/2023 17:57

I second the recommendation for Murdle - I bought it with the thought of giving it to DH as a stocking filler, but made the mistake of flicking through it - and now it's mine and lives by my bed - I do one or two puzzles every night before sleep. It's a logic puzzle book, for those who don't know, but with a sort of ongoing story throughout. Cheap too!

madeinmanc · 27/11/2023 18:00

Ortlieb rear panniers are also a good shout, the best panniers out there and she would get years of use from them. They also for with the description of her cycling.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 27/11/2023 18:13

Am wondering now what a 'conventional mother' is. Someone for whom those likes and dislikes were reversed?
Most of us here are mums and all like different things.

On a more helpful note, what about a yoga accessory such as a nice looking bolster or meditation cushion.

greyhairnomore · 27/11/2023 22:04

Another vote for Murdle.
