Portable piano

It looks like my DD18 will be moving away next year, she'll probably have to move location a few times as well during training. She really enjoys her piano but obviously won't be able to bring it with her. I was looking at a few folding or roll up options as a Christmas gift, has anyone use one of these?

Sorry OP those are total tat and don't play anything like a piano. They're kids' toys. If your daughter is serious about piano and wants something portable you'd be better going with something like this:

It does only have 5 octaves but is a much better portable option than one of those roll-up ones.
What grade does she play at? What instrument does she have at home?

Roland GO:PIANO

Digital Piano 61 Ivory feel box-shape keys with velocity response, 128-Voice polyphony, Bluetooth 4.2, MIDI format compliant to GM2, Sounds: 10 pianos, 7 electric pianos, 7 organs, 16 more sounds - incl. drumset and SFX set, Multi Effects / Chorus...

Thomann own brand are quite decent for the price point as well. We have one of theirs (full size digital piano), it weighs a good few kilos, more than the Roland does, but when we left Donegal for England it was the best option as we couldn't really take our upright on the ferry!

She uses a full size electric piano at home, not sure of the brand as DH was in charge of it but it's a good one. Unfortunately she'll be going by plane and won't have a car while she's there so a proper keyboard, even a 61 key, will just be too bulky. Thank you for the suggestion though!

Ah that's a tricky one. I can definitely see why you were looking at those. Has she an iPad you could get a piano app for? If not, there's this website that is more functional than the rolling/folding pianos once you get a handle on which keys to use:

I appreciate it's nothing like the real thing, though.

I had a Yamaha keyboard at uni, as missed tinkering on the ivories, it's not the same as piano (although with all the tech advances in the last 30 year it's probably changed loads). It was still quite cumbersome but it was my stress relief (had the bonus of having a headphone Jack so my house mates didn't have to put up with me bashing out endless country tunes...'house of the rising sun' is hardly a ball of laughs!) Great for thrashing out Christmas carols when the housemates wanted a singsong in typical student pissed up fashion!

Ahh missed the plane part, that makes it a bit more tricky.

I think it's best to ask her if she wants this before buying it - it's not a good surprise gift.
Depending what grade she's playing at, it might be good for some basic practice of scales and keeping her hand in whilst she's away from home.
But a lot of musicians would really dislike something like this - speaking personally as a pianist, I wouldn't want one as I see it as cheap and basic and more like a toy.

Part of playing a piano is the weight of the keys. A good electric keyboard has weighted keys so it feels like a real piano. This roll-up one isn’t going to have any movement at all when you press the keys. It’s not healthy for your hands to tap against keys that don’t move or have any give, it can give you carpal tunnel. Drum your fingers on the table for a bit and feel what it’s like - it’s actually painful. I wouldn’t waste my money on it.

We have a Yamaha P-121 which feels like a real piano but small and light enough to take on the tube on your back. It's really quite lovely to play considering how light it is.

It's about £500, you can probably pick one up for £400. Very much worth it. A proper flight case would be another £200, but that would be the same for anything.

Oh don't worry I don't dare get anything that big for her without discussion these days😁

I'll have a look at the apps, she doesn't have an iPad but there may be something that will work with her laptop. Se really does need to travel light!
