Dd has recently decided to be a vegetarian and I’d love some suggestions for a Christmas main course.

OP posts:

MnS nut roast

PortalooSunset · 26/11/2023 16:28

Pigs in blankets made from veggie sausages and fake bacon. Quorn fillet instead of turkey, everything else the same.

fiorentina · 26/11/2023 16:48

As a veggie I’m happy with all the main food - veggie stuffing and gravy and some veggie sausages. But no longer make or buy a veggie main as it’s just too much food for me.

Filo parcel of chestnuts, mixed mushrooms, onion, garlic, leek, bit of sherry, tarragon, whatever she likes. V easy to make.

AdaColeman · 26/11/2023 17:17

Large Portobello mushrooms stuffed with her favourite savoury stuffing, eg vegetarian sausage, rice & herbs, tomato & cheese etc etc.

Quick to prepare and cook,
Won't take up much oven space,
Goes well with other traditional foods
Very easy to buy.

Dd has been veggie for 10 years now, her preference is for a roast dinner with no turkey substitute. So roasties, Yorkshire pud, veg... boiled and roast, stuffing and quorn cocktail sausages wrapped in quorn bacon, and bisto gravy (From the red cardboard tub) (cranberry and bread sauce too).

OooPourUsACupLove · 26/11/2023 17:26

DH has been veggis forever and as long as the trimmings are done separately to the meat he's very happy with veggie sausages, veggies gravy and the same sides as everyone else.

Moreveganice · 26/11/2023 17:30

My DD just wants an extra potion of cauliflower cheese, plenty of veggie stuffing and veggie gravy and all the usual trimmings.

we’ve tried different roast and recipes over the years but they’re not as popular as lots of sage, onion and chestnut stuffing!

Mumaway · 26/11/2023 17:31

You'll have the oven on, so something delicious wrapped in puff pastry. Weirdly the jusrol gluten free one is nicer than the 'real' one. I like Brie and cranberry, but you could also do something delicious and mushrooms with some truffle oil....

How about a roasted vegetable Christmas cracker made with filo pastry and layered with mozzarella ? Serve with a tomato sauce. Yum :)

ElevenSeven · 26/11/2023 17:33

I was a vegetarian for ten years - I just ate the Christmas dinner/Sunday roast with extra stuffing, cauliflower cheese or veggie sausages in Yorkshire puddings

capelmustard · 26/11/2023 17:34

I have 3 vegetarians, last year I made them a mushroom wellington which was really delicious, and very easy if you buy ready rolled puff pastry. You could make the filling the day before and just assemble on the day if you like.

Veggie toad in the hole.

Paperbagsaremine · 26/11/2023 18:02

Vegetarian haggis. Microwave it, bof, done.

Loubelle70 · 26/11/2023 18:06

I made a lovely faux beef wellington last year.
Ingredients:;Ready made puff pastry sheet. Quorn beef roast. Mushroom shallots finely chopped to line the pastry inside mixed mushroom mushroom mix with cream cheese thyme ..salt pepper. I made individual parcels... cooked quorn first..left cool. large slice beef quorn placed on square of puff pastry..mushroom mixture on top..pull pastry up to make a parcel and egg wash top. Was lovely

I'm the only vegetarian but I always cook a whole recipe because I have it again with the annual Boxing Day meal (which in my family consists of abut five different kinds of pork) and other people will usually want to try some. Delia’s parsnip roulade with sage and onion stuffing is a star. It’s rich, full of flavour, feels special and works with the other components of a Christmas meal and is my favourite Christmas centrepiece I’ve made myself. It reheats well, so can can be made in advance and even frozen ahead of time. The meat eaters each had a slice alongside their meal too.

This year I’m going to try kale strata by Ottolenghi which sounds amazing, though I haven’t made it before.

Vegetarian haggis. Microwave it, bof, done.

I’d love this

My husband enjoys a giant mushroom filled with stuffing and goats cheese with a red wine and bisto gravy

If you don't mind buying in then Lidl do some nice veggie and vegan items in their deluxe range. Last year we had their nut roasts and probably will again this year, they're really nice. They come in a pack of two individuals roasts. Lidl also do some nice pies. Most supermarkets gave some nice veggie pies too, Linda McCartney's country pies are also good.

Linda McCartney does a nice festive roast which we've had before. It serves four though so may be too much, although we've had the leftovers with chips on boxing day and also in a sandwich for lunch.

Sainsburys do vegan pigs in blankets which are lovely. A quorn fillet is also nice and some years we just have one of those for ease.

DH and I are both veggie and usually try a whole host of options in our usual sunday roasts in Nov and Dec to see what we fancy on the big day itself.

housethatbuiltme · 06/12/2023 10:54

We do cheese and veg pasta... frankly I hate nut roast and the weird xmas meat wellingtons (If I wanted/could eat meat I would be eating meat, I don't want to eat something designed to replicate something that could kill me).

The Asda chestnut weath is really nice but hard to find and it serves like 18 people, trust me its impossible to eat alone (I have tried... twice)
