The best red wine for beginners!

Hello all,

I never drink red wine, usually gin or rosè.

Would love to pair some red wine with our dinner (roast beef joint/chicken with all the trimmings.

What's the best wine to start with? Nothing too strong, and relatively easy to drink.

Thank you.

I've never had a Malbec I can't drink

sgvibes · 22/11/2023 21:37

I'm a big fan of a malbec (they do a nice one at Lidl)

Rina66 · 22/11/2023 22:32

The Guvnor from Majestic is very good -it's a Spanish Tempranillo £8.99, very smooth
Agree with the 19 crimes, The Uprising is good
Aldi French Pinot Noir
Barolo is gorgeous but at least double the price of the other three, so good for a special occasion

I don't think I've ever had an unpleasant Merlot.

Merlots are a bit like ribena imho.

I'd go for a Tempranillo or maybe a nice Rioja OP.

DiscoBeat · 22/11/2023 22:56

We usually have Barolo with beef for special occasions.

Frazzledandfried · 28/11/2023 19:33

Thanks for the Jammy Red Roo tips - I was a stoic jam shedder but got this tonight and it's lovely!!!

Cookerhood · 28/11/2023 19:40

Not Shiraz, it catches the back of my throat.
Merlot, Malbec or Pinot noir. I also like rioja.

Musicaltheatremum · 28/11/2023 19:43

Go for Guv'nor from majestic. Best red I've ever had. Don't buy the VIP version. Was £6.99 a bottle but think it has gone up.

PiggieWig · 28/11/2023 19:55

Another recommendation for Jam Shed. I prefer Malbec to Shiraz - I find it smoother. You can often get miniatures to try it out.

ThreeRingCircus · 28/11/2023 21:10

Yet another recommendation for Jam Shed Malbec. It's very soft, sweet and fruity. Not harsh at all.

Barefoot Malbec is also very good (not as sweet as the Jam Shed one.)

PlumpShady · 28/11/2023 21:22

Another vote for Jammy Red Roo, but I’m going to try Jam Shed after reading this thread! I’m not a huge red fan usually but it’s delicious.

QueSyrahSyrah · 28/11/2023 21:27

Going against the grain but I think if I'd tried Jam Shed first I'd never have drunk red wine again. It's the only wine I've ever poured down the drain, it's far too sweet.

Agree with suggestion of 19 crimes as a reliable brand to try. I also like Beefsteak Malbec but it might be a bit heavy for some tastes.

winowin · 28/11/2023 21:32

@QueSyrahSyrah
I agree. Jamshed is sickly sweet.
I recommend Rioja reserve.

Chewbecca · 28/11/2023 21:33

I'd go for a gamay grape which is what you get in French Beaujolais. It will be labelled as Beaujolais, Fleurie, Morgon and a handful of others. It's a very light red wine with little oakiness or tannin.

BankruptedByBirds · 28/11/2023 22:04

Came here to say jammy red roo but I see I've been beaten to it. Really lovely and easy to drink, goes well with red meat.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 28/11/2023 22:34

Amarone della valpolicella. Guaranteed to get the most reluctant to try red wine. Luscious, rich, smooth and lovely

Goes with everything! It was so easy to drink it honestly reminded me of ribena!

wineoclock90 · 28/11/2023 22:42

I heart merlot is my favourite

buckeejit · 29/11/2023 00:00

I'm just home from my wine society club where we meet monthly & drink 4 white & 4 red, it's ace. We had a £75 bottle tonight. Most of us wouldn't spend that on a bottle.

I love the book 'best wines in the supermarket' you can get it from Amazon & it rates them out of
10. Great way to try things & separated by supermarket. I get it from Santa every year. Highly recommend!
