Generic cheap Christmas present for adults

Inanufpr1 · 18/11/2023 22:10

My 3 children have 10 Aunties and Uncles on my side of the family (3 couples, 4 still single) The adults in the family all do secret Santa and spend £100 on one person but despite me saying many times they don’t need to, all of them buy for my kids! There is only one other child so far (that obviously I will buy for) but I would therefore like to buy all 10 a little gift “from the kids”. My oldest DC (5) will make them all cards but I need something cheap and easy for all. Chocolate is the obvious choice but they’re mostly super healthy and I feel it is a waste! Any ideas?

Bake healthy gingerbread biscuits, wrap them nicely, attach card, done.

JustDoItNowForChristSake · 18/11/2023 22:15

I would never expect a gift from DC that I buy for and I would hate for their parents to feel the need to stress about buying something. I would also hate the waste of it all, especially cheap generic stuff.
Martin Lewis has a lot to say about buying transactional gifts!

I wouldnt start buying back, think of 10 years down the road and what it could balloon to. I would just do a card and if pushed have the dc ‘help’ make a home made gift like chutney or something (and enclose a little note saying that dc fingers didn’t get anywhere near the food making part of it all!)

Went to a Christmas Market today & tried this company's spiced apple juice & it was lovely - great if you're trying to avoid alcohol. It was their Chaider.

You really don’t need to buy back. I have quite a big family, we all buy for the kids, not for each other. Just make sure they get a thank you

How about socks? Always handy and lots of colours/patterns to choose from. Or those snood scarves are cool, though maybe not so cheap.

Ragwort · 18/11/2023 22:21

I would never have expected my nieces & nephews to give me presents, and, without wanting to sound rude, really don't want or need a 'cheap filler gift'. What I loved was a hand drawn card and a school photo.

bananabug · 18/11/2023 22:22

Just read other replies, I agree actually, probably no need to buy anything. But if you really want to give something back then it would be nice if the children make the adults a Christmas tree decoration each?

PermanentTemporary · 18/11/2023 22:23

Another vote for a school photo, if anything. But really a card is fine.

AdoraBell · 18/11/2023 22:24

I second the baking biscuits.

SanexExpert · 18/11/2023 22:24

You don’t need to buy back, esp if your DC has made a card.

Inanufpr1 · 18/11/2023 22:25

Hmmmm, maybe I shouldn’t then reading replies. I hate “tat” as well, which is why we do secret Santa with a £100 budget rather than 10x £10 gifts. My kids are just the first in the family and get so spoilt by everyone! We always do handmade Christmas cards for them and I write a thank you note after from the kids too. A fun pair of Christmas socks or a handmade tree ornament are good ideas though, thanks!

If the kids are crafty, find a salt dough recipe and let the kids do a portrait of each person. I used to love seeing how creative my DC would make me look. Add a ribbon or magnet to the back so they can be hung/put on the fridge if small enough.

Poppins17 · 18/11/2023 22:32

I wouldn’t buy back either, but maybe a gesture of a photo of them with your child inside the card?

caringcarer · 18/11/2023 22:40

Let the DC make them a Xmas tree ornament. I still have an egg box cut up and wrapped in tin foil with a pipe cleaner to make a bell my Dniece made me when she was 4 to hang on my tree. I put it carefully away every year. My niece is an adult now and laughs but I think she secretly likes the fact I still put it up every year right at the front of my tree. Your DC could use salt dough and paint it after. A star is easy to do. Use a cookie cutter.

OMGitsnotgood · 18/11/2023 22:43

I would buy a supermarket Poinsettia- not too expensive and love them

Ragwort · 18/11/2023 22:55

The Christmas tree decoration is a good idea ... my niece is 40 now but I still hang up a decoration she made for me every year.

SageLavenderThyme · 19/11/2023 15:10

Socks. I'd go for a wintery print or wool sock rather than Xmas themed.

AwkwardSquad · 19/11/2023 17:49

As an auntie, I love the homemade Christmas decorations that I’ve been given by my niece and nephew; we put them on our tree every year.

The hand made card from your DC is plenty, no need to buy presents.
