Something they want, something they need

Anyone else thinking of following that old Mumsnet favourite: something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read? I went really overboard last year so I'm thinking of following this for my DD who will be 3 (and who will also get a stocking and one present from FC that she hasn't decided on yet).

I'm thinking:
Want: toy crib with bedding
Need: peanut ball
Wear: bag for when she starts nursery
Read: Ella Bella ballerina books.

If you're following the categories what will you be getting?

What's a peanut ball?

Heatherbell1978 · 16/11/2023 20:08

What would a 3 year old need a peanut ball for? And what is a peanut ball?

MammaWeasel · 16/11/2023 20:22

OK, I have googled now. It's a sensory exercise ball-type inflatable thing for children.

DD1 (age 11) is sorted:

Want - microbit stuff
Need - purple guitar case
Wear - new riding hat
Read - Mina Lima Harry Potter 3

She's not written a list yet so I'm not sure what gift Father Christmas will bring her. She gets one from him plus a stocking.

Oh sorry, wasn't trying to drip feed but DD is suspected autistic and very very sensory seeking, think it will make a positive difference for her (and be a lot of fun too hopefully)

Not what you asked I know @Muteswan but I wanted to say- my sensory seeking 4yo dd loves her peanut ball, highly recommend! Smile

I think it’s a bit miserable, to be honest. But I agree it can be easy to get carried away. I’m just not a massive fan of that particular saying.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 16/11/2023 20:33

Nope. It's absolutely fuddy duddy miserable and boring

Muteswan · 16/11/2023 21:19

@AlmondButterToast that's really great to hear, thank you!!

Yep always do...but loosely. I wouldn't not buy something because it didn't fit the rhyme so veer off occasionally. And I tend to add one other gift as well - usually a 'something to make/do' but not always. And they get their stocking too.

DS15
Cash for a new monitor for gaming PC
Cricket bag
Mystery football shirt
Football stadium scratch-off poster
LED lights

DD11
Hand-painted high-top trainers
Vanity case
Teddy bear bedding
Clothing voucher
Selection of slimes

DD5
Glow art pad
Mosaic art kit
Swimmable mermaid tail
Set of books
Potion kit

Mumsnet hates this dreaded rhyme...miserable and joyless and all the rest of it. But my DC will be chuffed with their lot and they get lovely gifts from grandparents and wider family too. So they still do extremely well and I don't go overboard!

DD is trying it out this year, I can only remember need and that's rugby boots. If he was given his choice would be booked in three categories want , need and read.

I love doing this and do it for birthdays too! Otherwise we would completely overwhelm our LO with stuff, for Christmas we have

happy hippo game
bike
Patagonia fleece
poppy and Sam bedtime story collection

He also gets a full stocking with scleich animals/tonies/ jellycat teddy and then a million other presents from family so he doesn’t do too badly 😂
