I usually get them a restaurant voucher but wondered if I'm missing a great idea..

No idea. Usually get them a restaurant / afternoon tea / garden centre voucher but get the impression they don’t want them as they still have some left to use.

Following with interest.

I'm getting my dad a bottle of brandy and some Lindor truffles, and my mum a bottle of sherry and some peanut brittle. Then for both of them, a hand trowel and hand fork for the garden (requested) and a canvas printed photo of my children (also requested).

PiL are getting cinema vouchers as requested.

Forgottenmyphone · 14/11/2023 12:15

Tickets for ABBA Voyage.

SabrinaThwaite · 14/11/2023 12:57

We make up hampers of nice foody things that they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves. So preserves, pickles, cheese, wine, chocolates, tea, coffee, nuts, oils, olives crackers etc.

My Dad just wants socks. This is all he asks for, every year. Not even colourful ones, just black socks 😂

So he's getting socks, but also I am getting him some NIO cocktails in a little set. He has a bar at home, so I thought he might enjoy them. Who knows, but it's at least a bit more exciting to open 😂

For Mom, I am getting an LSA Canopy Self Watering Planter, along with a garden centre voucher (so she can buy something to go in it) and her obligatory bottle of Stone's Ginger Wine.

My parents are the type who have everything, so they are incredibly hard to buy for but I think I've done ok this year.

After much deliberation, DH and I decided to get MIL an Oodie. She is even more difficult than my parents to buy for, but she's asked for dressing gowns etc in the past so we think this might be a decent idea.

i’m getting my dad a remote controlled boat that you use whilst fishing to release bait. my son told me that they’d seen someone using one and my dad wouldn’t stop talking about it. i can’t wait for him to open it! i’ve bought my mum an oodie because she loves mine, and will get her some perfume and a chanel lipgloss to go with it.

MirandaGreenwood · 14/11/2023 13:41

I have absolutely no idea. No clue at all. I'm hoping for some inspiration!

It's just my mum.
She's in poor health so doesn't go out much. She has diabetes so hampers and sweet treats are a no-no. She doesn't have a TV.

Her house is falling apart and I'm happy to throw money at it to remedy that. But I live quite far away so its challenging to organise things and she won't do stuff for herself.
Example: She hasn't had a cooker for years. I've told her that I'll buy her one, she just needs to measure the space where it'll go. She can't measure it. So that's that.

@Stephisaur I got my mum an Oodie last year, she loves it.

Stephisaur · 14/11/2023 13:44

@MirandaGreenwood glad she likes hers! I have one and DH has recently asked for one too but I don't think his Mom even knows what they are, so hoping we haven't missed the mark.

Is there like a home helper service you could pay for for your mom? Someone to come and help her with the jobs she can't do? No idea if that's a real service, but maybe worth finding out?

gazingatgoats · 14/11/2023 13:51

@MirandaGreenwood Just a thought, could you buy your mum an air fryer instead of a cooker. My FIL loves his, finds it easy to use and clean, he hadn't used his cooker for years but uses the air fryer all the time.

Parents live back in Germany. For the in-laws we ask and yes, it is a bit of a business exchange but we still like it. We normally send a small parcel with some treats and tea.

My mum - she is determind not to have anything dust catching. So I normally get her books, jigsaw puzzle, calendar, some really good hand cream. I order that via Amazon.de to get it shipped without issues. She also gets a treat parcel.

Nah, I'm sure once she figures out how to wear it she'll be a convert.

That's a great idea but she's bloody stubborn as a mule. And its complicated by the fact she used to work as a carer so is quite resistant to having people coming in to provide help - I think she sees it as a bit of an indignity.

For her birthday this year, I said I was going to organise and pay for a cleaner to do a weekly clean for her. She didn't want it and actually got quite miffed about it. I think if I'd just organised one and told her that one was coming, it might've been fine but living so far away makes it difficult.

Weird you should say that - she has got one and actually finally, after about 10 years of gathering dust, dug it out of the cupboard last weekend.

I haven't talked to her since but I'm hoping its been a revelation and she'll start using it rather than frying or microwaving every single foodstuff she buys.

I've got my dad the cocoba advent calendar, he has cancer and swallowing food is becoming an issue, fancy hot choc should work out okay.

Otherwise I'm pretty stumped. I'll get him charging cables and socks but not sure what else yet.

Cheesecake53 · 14/11/2023 14:50

I got my mum last year this footmuff https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1070431313/wool-foot-warmer-foot-muff?ref=yr_purchases and it was such a hit that my sister asked for one this year. It took a bit long to arrive because they are made to order, but it was definitely worth it.

poignant · 14/11/2023 15:09

My parents live abroad so I order Xmas bunch of flowers for them through interflora. They seem to appreciate them.

PIL got induction job this year so some pots and pans for them.

So sorry it's taken so long to thank you all for your great ideas!

It's just my dad now 😞 he knows I'm struggling so has said to get nothing but I've got him his fave aftershave, socks and pants (every year) and I'm making up a sweetie hamper (doing one for everyone) of his fave sweets. I might get him a jumper too

TeenDivided · 19/11/2023 09:02

My DPs are late 80s/early 90s. They have everything they want.
We have just delivered: a calendar, a leg pillow, a book on prime ministers, a fleecy rug, some chocolates and a half bottle of red wine.

AuntieMarys · 19/11/2023 09:10

Ds has bought me Richard Hawley tickets, dd theatre vouchers. I don't want " stuff". Just need not to die till I use them!

TeaGinandFags · 25/12/2023 08:43

We got Mum a porch hood thingy so she doesn't get wet when fumbling for her keys and a box of bath smellies with a mini bath lily. The porch went up in November when it started raining in earnest. Dad is no longer with us so he's getting a toast at Christmas dinner.
