Electric Scooter

Ronnie1234 · 14/11/2023 06:31

My 6.5 year old has requested an electric scooter for Christmas her friend has one. Just after some advice please if

  1. They are suitable for that age?
  2. They get used much?
  3. Any recommendations of one to purchase?
Thanks 😊

Well they can be very fast and they're illegal and in most parts of the country and can only be used in private land. That's assuming you're in the UK of course.

Needmorelego · 14/11/2023 06:42

Yes they aren't legal to use anywhere except your own private land.
So unless your child is happy doing circles on your drive they are kinda pointless.

MinnesotaMuffin · 14/11/2023 06:43

I don’t have any recommendations but are you aware that electric scooters can only be used on private land? The ones you can hire in big cities are under some sort of trial scheme.

Currently, electric scooters can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission. It is effectively illegal to use them on public roads, on pavements, in cycle lanes and in pedestrian-only areas. (Halford’s website)

Cupcakegirl13 · 14/11/2023 06:48

Yes a complete waste of money unless you have some acres !

Solongnow · 14/11/2023 06:55

Have you got a lot of land or has the friend got a lot of land for them to play on

SoupDragon · 14/11/2023 07:43

I think they are completely unsuitable and unsafe for that age.

HiyaWatha · 14/11/2023 07:53

Totally irresponsible present.

Oh gosh ok I didn't realise that the kids ones were too! It was a scooter she pointed out in smyths toys catalogue 🙈
Ridiculous them being sold if illegal to use

This is mental, and I'm saying that as someone who has one. I wouldn't let my kids go anywhere near mine. They go really fast (15mph). They're also illegal (although the police turn a blind eye and there's talk of them being legalised next year)

Unless this is some sort of little kids version?

Ronnie1234 · 15/11/2023 06:07

It is a kids one she pointed at in smyths toys catalogue

I had not decided to buy I was doing some research hence my question asking here & doing some research. As I know now that they cannot be used currently on public land & are not a wise purchase I won't be continuing with this idea & reverting to a traditional scooter to tick the box of the scooter request.

We do have private property she could ride it on but seems pretty pointless purchase if they cannot use out & about

To be fair, the listing does explicitly say you can't use them on public land.

Ronnie1234 · 15/11/2023 08:23

@SoupDragon
In the catalogue my daughter just pointed at the scooter & there were no guidelines jumping out at me I came on here to ask questions / research I've most certainly been put in my place about this! I only looked up the online link to post to this page. There is a lot more highlighted information online than in the brochure!
Thank you for pointing out this information which I saw myself after sending the link this morning.

Im really pleased I came on here to ask my question

Don’t worry! Electric scooters are safe for children. My daughter also has a SEGWAY-NINEBOT C2 B e-scooter. In general, kid scooters have lower speed limits, usually around 5 to 8 mph, which is enough and safe for kids. But as a father myself, I advise you only to allow them to ride in the park and less crowded spaces.

Talking about recommendations, I haven't explored much in the kid scooter segment, but my daughter's scooter is also good. I bought this 1 year ago, and it's still running very well.

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 13:05

@Mandy60
Safe..... maybe.
But illegal unless on private property.
(oh by the way......old thread)

JaneandtheLaundry · 15/11/2024 13:10

Argh zombie!!!!

Mandy60 · 15/11/2024 13:20

@Needmorelego I don't know much about the legalities, but my daughter rides it only in the garden and sometimes in our backyard.

Ronnie1234 · 15/11/2024 13:36

We bought one she rides it in park, cycle path etc had a fair bit of use outside as well as at home on land

@Ronnie1234 I am happy for your daughter. 🤗

Needmorelego · 15/11/2024 14:07

@Mandy60 you must have a big garden to make it worth while.
You said "I advise you only to allow them to ride in the park" which is ILLEGAL.
@Ronnie1234 you are also allowing your child to break the law.
Oh well. Your choice.
