How many gifts do you change your mind about once bought?

Last year I was determined not to buy a load of presents and then decide against them.
Unfortunately I have already failed. I’ve got my friend two gifts both of which I don’t think I’l give her ( also her birthday soon) One was an original 1950’s train stub from her home town. I was going to make it into a birthday card but then felt sorry for the ticket having survived 70 years probably only to be binned by my friend.
So then I got an old bus display sign of the town as they look good framed but this was too modern and looks like I have printed out her hometown on a big bit of paper. She won’t be impressed
After putting thought into two wrong gifts and spending £20, she’ll probably just get another thoughtless bottle of gin at a cost of another £20.

I shall probably do the same with small gifts for everyone else too. I think it’s got worse when I buy online. Less mistakes with real life shopping.

Please tell me someone else over thinks all their gifts.

Bother. Meant to post in Christmas. Have asked to move it.

Freudian slip perhaps. This behaviour cots me a fortune.

We might be kindred spirits.

Could you make the ticket stub into something that would get used? Eg a bookmark, lid of a small box, or put it in a frame, fridge magnet, that sort of thing?

fernsandlilies · 12/11/2023 08:55

But in answer to the OP, yes I do this. I have presents that I bought in the past still sitting in the cupboard because I know they are wrong, I got carried away at the time.

Good to know about the bus display. I have been eyeing them up, and wondering if they'd lose their charm once cup up and framed.

@fernsandlilies That's a good idea. I was fixated on a birthday card as something she could frame but realistically she won't. She likes a fridge magnet though.

@Thingsthatgo I think they differ. I bought one for myself which is better as its actually got the Brtish rail sign on it and the font looks bus like. However its quite big. Quotes for the frame are £100 plus. I have just bought a linen one which looks much older. I can report back on that!

So far three... not so much because I changed my mind but because they where ordered online and NOT as advertised.

One was an item of vinted that was claimed to be new without tags 'just tried on' but was in shockingly bad condition. Clearly worn to death (there photos didn't show the holes and stains). They should be utterly ashamed of themselves (fit for nothing but the bin).

One was a toy not fit for purpose (turned out to be a cheap plastic Chinese knockoff). Unusable.

One was a belt which is actually perfectly nice but just the sizing was completely wrong. I will probably just keep it for myself since it fits me.
