Dairy free, nut free Christmas dessert

I need to think of a Christmas dessert that I can make that is free from nuts, peanuts and dairy due to a nut allergy and a dairy intolerance in the family. There will be other desserts including dairy like the traditional Yule log and trifle, but it would be good if the person who can't eat dairy had a nice dessert too! I'm a bit stumped, any suggestions? Preferably something that is not hugely time consuming to make.

Nigella Chocolate Olive Oil cake is easy and delicious. Can be made with ground almonds or flour and the flour version is just as nice as the almond one.

Pears poached in mulled wine, served with Swedish Glace ice cream ?

The pears actually go very well with Christmas pudding (honestly!) so I always make loads

Meringue, some kind of pastry with vegetable baking block/dairy free spread are the obvious home made options.

Kind of "sour" like cherry fruit pie with a meringue top. Dairy free cream does exist (Oatly was decent).

Blended frozen banana slices make a lovely creamy ice cream substitute. It only takes a minute but they need to be blended right before serving.

Apple crumble (note most supermarket apple strudels are dairy free) and custard (birds powder made with coconut milk).

Christmas pudding?

Steamed syrup pudding (using rice milk) with rhubarb and custard.

I make custard with rice milk. Must use cornflour else it won’t set.

Meringue with fruit.

Have a look at those instant puddings. You can make trifle with it if you want. Many of them are just add milk and I have done them with rice milk. Rice milk can be gritty so make it 48 hours ahead and the grittiness softens.

Buy a medium free-from everything supermarket christmas pudding, bung it into a liquidiser with 2 cans coconut milk, 3 egg yolks and 4 tbs dark sugar.

If you have an icecream maker just use that and let it do the work. Otherwise, put the mixture in the freezer, get it out after 45 mins and whisk it up. Back in the freezer, keep going just brwaking up the ice crystals as they form every 20-30 mins (intervals gradually decreasing) until it gets so frozen you can no longer whisk it.

If you are feeling creative, at the last whisk make sure it is packed down firmly in a round bowl, and later on turn that upside down onto a plate and carve a "brick" pattern to make it look like an igloo. But that's optional.

I could have written this. Teenage daughter is nearly lactose intolerant and struggling a little with missing out. I am going to have a practice run on a dairy free cheesecake with flora plant based double cream and lactose free soft cheese.

I make a vegan chocolate cheesecake for Christmas.

1 pack of crushed digestive biscuits mixed with melted margarine for the base.

1 small tub of vegan cream cheese; 1 pack of plain, soft tofu; 1 carton of vegan cream; big dollop of maple syrup. Whizz in the blender. Melt a big bar of decent dark chocolate and add to the topping mixture.

I sometimes add orange juice or rum and a handful of raisins to vary the flavour.

@sandytoeswales has she tried using lactase tablets? They work wonders and would mean she doesn't have to miss out on anything

Check out The Friendly Baker cookbook - all the recipes are free from dairy and nuts and there's plenty of Christmas recipes

Newuser75 · 10/11/2023 06:36

I'm not sure if you are wanting to make the whole lot by scratch but you can buy dairy free custard, cream and ice cream if that helps?

Simd1 · 10/11/2023 09:48

Oh wow, so many good ideas here! Thank you all so much for taking the time to post. I will look into the suggestions and it'll also give me dessert ideas for future, not just for Christmas. Particularly intrigued by the olive oil cake - love Nigella. I'll definitely make that at some point! The trifle is being made by someone else and the cream kept separate so it can be topped with dairy free cream instead so there is that option too.
