Present ideas for 9 year old girl, who doesn't like toys anymore.

As the title says- she doesn't really play with toys anymore, like Roblox, Squish-mallows ( I already got her a plushie- that is the only toy exception), like to make bracelets and desperately wants her own phone, be a YouTuber and do a TikToks.🙈

I will probably get her some nice and fluffy pjs too, clothes, bits and pieces etc but all I can think are just those small things and cannot figure out the main present.

What are you getting to your girls?

Mine wants an Apple Pencil for her iPad.

You can get a "studio creator" set with ring light, tripod and green screen which is good if you don't mind her making videos (though not posting them)

Big present this year is Olivia Rodrigo tickets - she's asked but I've told her they're sold out. Will be a big surprise.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 09/11/2023 10:23

Big gift ideas…
Bike
Basketball or netball hoop
Scooter
ipad
Experience -theatre, zoo keeper, concert, Harry Potter studios etc
Nintendo switch
TV
Big girl room makeover - light up mirror, rug, cosy chair, bedding, beanbag, desk or vanity

CeeJay81 · 09/11/2023 10:32

My dd9.5 is not getting a lot this year, as there isn't much she wants bar a phone, like yours. I said she can have one for her 10th birthday. She is going to be having her older brothers Xbox One though, as he is getting a Series S. So she is happy with that.

Her main present will be a guitar(she's recently started lessons). Also a couple of Pusheen soft toys she wants, craft bits, board game and her stocking.

Forgottenmyphone · 09/11/2023 10:48

If she likes making bracelets, I definitely recommend a KumiKreator

17caterpillars1mouse · 09/11/2023 11:22

Does she need a main present?

I've bought my dd (slightly younger) the bigjigs wooden sudoku set. She loves numbers and hoping it will keep her entertained in the mornings as she wakes ridiculously early.

Would things like

  • rubix cube
  • lush bath bomb set
  • diamond art set
  • fimo for making her own beads
  • Funko pop characters for her room

Interest her at all?

Tearsofamermaid · 09/11/2023 11:29

My 8.5 year old will be getting walkie talkies, a handbag, purse, a “pink ring” and a watch as her main gifts (split between ‘Santa’, grandparents and us) and I am planning to get some fun gifts/stocking fillers such as colouring books, pjs, chocs, bath bubbles and art materials. She also still loves cuddly toys so I might get her a teddy bear to add to her collection. This does feel like a tricky age as DD is also no longer interested in toys but too young for some other items still.

Colinswheels · 09/11/2023 12:03

My DD is 11 so a little older but she wants:

Handbag with changeable straps
Nike pro shorts / leggings
Beanbag
Ear pods (won't be expensive Apple ones)

Have also got her tickets for a musical.

When she was 9 she got one of the instax poloroid type cameras that instantly prints photos which went down well.

What are you getting to your girls?

The new 'Pictionary AI' , 'Twister air' and 'Bitzee interactive pet'
My 8 year old was able to test these out this week at an exclusive 'top 20 toy for Xmas' event. She's lost interested in dolls and other sorts of toys, but these interactive games really grabbed her interest

cornflower21 · 09/11/2023 12:27

Thank you everyone for a great suggestion- we already have a few things that were mentioned here but there's few things that'll check up.

I think she doesn't need a main present but more like something that she'll be thrilled and excited.

It's a such a tricky age isn't?

Much easier when they were younger.🙈

As someone who was undermined by my ex who provided our child with a phone (when kiddo was aged 8), I should warn you that they become glued to their phone, they refuse to listen and it just causes trauma - people online are often spiteful and you don't always know how old they are. I recommend walking away from a phone until they're at least in secondary school and if you do, keep it basic. You might not be the favourite parent, but you will at least be the good parent.

From experience I would discuss internet safety with her, 9 year old girls should not be posting videos of themselves online without parental supervision/access to their account. Even online interactions which are targeted for kids and supposed to be "safe" for kids really are not without teaching them the importance of protecting their identity and not giving out passwords (tip: when setting up a child's account, use swear words as a password, this way most sites will star out their password or block any sentence containing their password if it is ever revealed. It may get them disciplined, but better than losing their account to a thief)

I recommend encouraging your child with craft kits, instrumental music lessons, dance lessons, drama class, photography, ice skating, bowling, - anything they can learn new skills because when they ditch toys, they are at a new stage of discovering themselves. It's a good idea to expose them to lots of new things, not necessarily things that they've always enjoyed (it's still a good idea to ask them if they'd like to try it first.) It's a time of change for them and as parents scary for us because it feels like our kid has been swapped for a child we do not know, but still looks like our child. The next stage of their development is wanting to do less and less stuff with adult family members, so make the most of what time you have doing stuff with them now.

My 9 year old girl is getting an Instax camera, very popular among her friends this year. She also is 'too old' for toys sadly 😢

Goneback2school · 10/11/2023 12:03

My 8.5 year old girl has asked for a tablet. Santa usually brings books and a board game- I've yet to decide on those. I'll probably add in some canvases (she loves painting), posca pens and cute supplies for her new room as we are moving soon.

She wouldn't get phone or making videos it's too early- those are her wishes, that's why I'm asking for some other ideas.

My 11 year old still wants squishmallows!! However she’s getting some practical equipment for her horse riding hobby - body protector, boots, hat silk as she has a hat, socks, boot bag etc.

Preciously she’s been gifted (or saved from money given and bought): iPad, Apple Pencil, her sister has AirPods, phone, jewellery making kits - she loves to make ear rings to sell and also bracelets and necklaces with proper equipment, diamond art, clothes, make up, Lego sets.

Im always surprised by these 9 year olds who give up toys and want designer handbags and clothes (a big group were like this in DD’s class a few years ago).

My 15 year old wants ‘nothing’. This is always tricky!! She’s had a mini fridge for her room, same Apple products as her sister, clothes, soft toys, her own tv, echo dot.

I was thinking of getting a telescope.

Kiki16 · 11/11/2023 00:08

I love this! Especially the concert tickets, how fun! Can you be my Mum?! 😉

Lighttodark · 11/11/2023 00:15

vlogging camera to record but not upload online obvs
insta camera

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 12/11/2023 10:31

Would she like a camera of some kind? We’ve been looking at a kids SLR style camera on Amazon for our son’s birthday (he’ll be 7) as he likes to use mine. We gave him my husbands old digital camera but he likes the turn zoom function on my SLR. Or getting a video type one she can shoot videos on (go pro type thing maybe?) but not upload anywhere but can maybe share with grandparents. My son likes to film little videos on my phone and send them to my husband/my mum.

buckeejit · 12/11/2023 12:31

Some good ideas here thanks. My 10 year old wants nothing. She has a phone & loves staying in touch & playing with her friends. She is quite mature though. I might put some treats for the cats & dogs in the dc sacks for filler!

Maybe a light up mirror would be good

Also oodies if they don't have them already - trueface on eBay have these which are the proper oodies according to the Christmas thread & savenow gives 20% off

Stressedoutmammy · 14/11/2023 06:42

My DD is also 9 and we have the same problem, I’ve had to nag her to come up with a list as there isn’t anything she wants/needs. It’s a bit of an in-between age isn’t it, too old for toys, too young to be appreciate clothes etc. she eventually said drum kit but I can’t see the interest lasting so thinking of getting her a roll up one to see how it goes and a hug pillow. Other presents are oodie, Nike pro leggings, board games, but it’s going to be the first year without a big main present.

cornflower21 · 15/11/2023 08:25

It's a such a tricky age isn't, something in between child and teenager.

She does already have a lot of things mentioned here, that's the problem, I think she doesn't really want or needs anything particularly special iykwim.

I told her to a list for Santa this weekend as time is ticking and I would like to get it sorted earlier this year.

She mentioned inline roller skates, but we already have a garage full of scooters, skateboards, bikes etc and she barely touches it.🙈

Wasn't it easier when she was smaller and anything with Skye from Paw Patrol was a huge hit!😃
