Boxing Day ham… with?

Poppins17 · 05/11/2023 21:55

There will be 6 of us at our house Boxing Day evening.

Im planning a ham (please let me know if you have a good recipe), with jacket potatoes, homemade coleslaw, salad, pickles and part baked bread cut into chunks.

Anything else I should serve with it?

Any recommendations for dessert? We’ll be having Christmas pudding, trifle and Christmas cake over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Ideally would like something quite light, perhaps fruity, but not pavlova.

Thanks in advance!

This is the ultimate ham recipe www.sainsburysmagazine.co.uk/recipes/christmas/maple-and-honey-roast-ham

I also recommend this coleslaw www.waitrose.com/home/recipes/recipe_directory/c/christmas-slaw-.html

For pudding you could do Jamie’s honey berry filo smash https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit-recipes/honey-berry-filo-smash/

left over turkey
left over chestnut stuffing
left over bread sauce

PurBal · 06/11/2023 06:23

We use the slow cooker for ham.

Ditch the jacket and make bubble and squeak with the left overs form the night before.

Trifle is under rated.

Double cream mash
Homemade coleslaw
Chutney
Pickles
Leftover bread sauce
Leftover stuffing balls
Cranberry sauce
Leftover turkey also!

Mince pies and brandy butter/cream
Cheese and crackers

Crusty baguettes (the ones that go in the oven to bake).

I've been doing this for years and it does down very well!

I'd perhaps add some cheese and fruit as a lighter pud option.

Nigella’s macaroni cheese deluxe

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 06/11/2023 07:03

Jacket potato???
Bubble and squeak, it's the boxing day law!😂

BoobyDazzler · 06/11/2023 07:08

Nigellas ham in coke recipe is the only recipe you need for ham!

We have ours with bubble and squeak and pickles and maybe a couple of fried eggs.

HoppingPavlova · 06/11/2023 07:10

What’s wrong with the pav?

Nigella’s macaroni cheese deluxe

I came here to say this!

OP, what you describe is almost my ideal Boxing Day food. No mac n cheese - way too fatty and stodgy after Christmas Day.

Rather than baked potatoes or bubble and squeak, you could do old fashioned potato salad - new potatoes steamed or lightly boiled in their skins, tossed in half light mayo, half greek yoghurt with plenty of spring onions and chives and maybe a bit of fresh mint.

GettingStuffed · 06/11/2023 09:12

Cook your ham in cider, whole spices, I use cloves, cinnamon, allspice and pepper. Cook carrots and potatoes in the liquid at the same time. The next day add red lentils to the liquid and blitz if wished for a ham & lentil soup.

Poppins17 · 06/11/2023 14:47

Thanks for all the recommendations.

We don’t really like bubble and squeak so that never even entered my mind, but also we aren’t hosting Christmas so won’t have any leftovers to play with. Same with mac and cheese - it’s just pasta and cheese, right? I may look at it for a smaller side if the others want it though.

We’re going to someone else’s house for brunch, then the cinema so won’t be spending all day at home to prepare to host for the evening, so I need to keep it fairly simple.

Thank you, everyone!

Sounds lovely. I would do cauliflower cheese as a side or red cabbage.

Nippi · 06/11/2023 15:52

I serve ham with a cheesy leek mashed potato thing.
Saute leeks in butter, add a teaspoon of veg stock powder little flour and milk.
Put in the bottom of a tray / lasagne dish. sprinkle with grated cheese. Top with mashed potato and more cheese and bake.
It's divine and I'll be doing that on boxing day for 10 people with ham and something vegetarian as yet to be decided.

We have a cooked ham on Boxing Day as part of a buffet - usually have the following:
Ham
Leftover roast potatoes
Coleslaw
Mexican slaw
Salad
Potato salad
Salsa
Guacamole
Chips
Crudités
Cheese
Pickles
Rolls
Sausage rolls
Cocktail sausages
Leftover turkey

Slow cook the gammon in cider several days in advance. Allow it to cool in the liquid before draining, patting dry, studding the gammon with cloves and painting with a honey and mustard glaze (as simple as it sounds, mix some Dijon mustard into honey). Pop back in the fridge. When you get in from the cinema put the oven on hot and roast the gammon for 30mins or so until the glaze caramelises.

mondaytosunday · 06/11/2023 16:44

We will similar on Boxing Day I think what you have already is fine. For dessert we will have maybe some ice cream or a crumble. There will be seven of us and no one wants to do loads of cooking after Christmas Day (we will have about nine then).

APurpleSquirrel · 06/11/2023 17:23

Oh I forgot dessert!
We usually have Christmas Pudding, chocolate mousse, mince pies, apple crumble, lemon meringue pie & Yule log.
I also make extras like mincemeat brownies, mint aero Rocky Road, Nigella's gelato - that sort of thing.

Bigmousestrikesagain · 07/11/2023 13:26

My mum always did something similar as we hosted on Boxing Day. She also did a Mediterranean vegetable tart, which went down well ( it had roasted veggies, some olive and Parmesan on the top - east with pre made pastry and felt nice and ‘light’). Also a salad with fennel ( if you like it! ) and nuts and a lemony mustardy dressing which go really well with ham.

pudding was always trifle! But also big bowl of stewed fruits ( sounds awful but really wasn’t) served warm in a lightly scented orange syrup with ice cream.

Bigmousestrikesagain · 07/11/2023 13:27

Oh and pickled whole baby beets.

I much preferred it to Xmas dinner tbh!
