Getting carried away buying for my three year old and need to make sure baby brother has some gifts so it doesn’t seem like a hugely unequal pile! He has all hee old baby toys and don’t want to get extra stuff for the sake of it. Thinking books, cuddly toy, clothes. Anything else I’m missing that won’t be wasteful but will bulk up his stash please? Not sure a pack of nappies will cut it…

ffs
'bulk up his stash'???
don't buy stuff just for the sake of it
tell your dd that babies are too little to understand Christmas and Santa will come for him next year

LittleGreenDragons · 05/11/2023 20:07

Get a toy that he will use soon. You can never have enough stacking cups that are great for holding water, sand, (rice, pasta).

Or a toy that is also sensory. I don't know if they are still made but my DD had an octopus with a bell inside and each leg has a different feel (soft or crinkly etc). She loved it.

EDIT. it's never too early to start with the unequal amount talk. Just because something is small doesn't mean it's cheap or worthless. Talk appropriately about values/worth.

MaliciaKeys · 05/11/2023 20:09

Sensory toys are always good. Things he will enjoy as he gets older - building bricks, shape sorters, bucket and spade etc. You could buy a few cuddly toys from a charity shop to bulk up his pile, they usually have loads, and only 50p - £1.

Rjahdhdvd · 05/11/2023 20:10

We had this and I did:
-baby biscuits
-plate
-sippy cup
-clothes
-book
-toothbrush
-bips
-baby wash
-baby lotion
Basically anything I imagined needing in the next few months so it was useful

DaffyDaffy · 05/11/2023 20:10

I used to wrap up wipes, Muslin squares, dummies, bubble bath, anything!

ooh look, some new wipes!

wishing3 · 05/11/2023 20:10

I’m trying to think of nice things I’d buy for him over the coming year anyway so that I can give them to him on Christmas Day. I specifically said I didn’t want to be buying stuff for the sake of it. So stick your ‘FFS’ .

Thanks-thing is we have all that stuff saved from his sister. Yes, good point on the discussion.

@wishing3 Santa is very clever - he knows that baby’s don’t need as many things because they can’t play yet!

carddino · 05/11/2023 20:13

I honestly don't think kids project like adults.

Mine were three, adopted twins, then just two, and then baby was a week old.

Baby got a star for tree saying her name and I don't recall one of them noticing.

Baby didn't write a list.

Baby just excited to be here.

Yesss, great ideas thanks. Weaning related stuff will be useful and gives him a little pile or gifts.

I know, I think she’d just like helping him unwrap his gifts and stuff.

Bath toys, sensory balls, sit to stand play table, toys he will want as he's nearer one (wrap siblings old ones - unless you think they will remember). Tell sibling that Santa knows he will be getting lots of toys from sibling if they ask.

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 05/11/2023 20:18

Our have 1 present each from Santa - the rest are from mum and dad.
We felt this stops the unfairness between the kids and between our kids and their friends.
Saying that things we would get for littles:
*fun toothbrush and paste
*organix rice cakes
*baby snacks
*small sensory toy
*age appropriate book
*next size clothes/jumper

tbh we don’t go overboard and they might have 10-15 presents in total altogether Inc. from telatives.
Our family’s both do secret Santa and the kids are part of it so don’t get loads of presents from everyone. Which is nice because it doesn’t get too much.

stepintochristmas1 · 05/11/2023 20:18

I would suggest some Christmas themed clothes like hats ,bibs ,socks ,and vests saying how much santa adores him . That way you will get use out of the items ,after all you can never have to many vests .

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 05/11/2023 20:21

and yes to wrapping up all the stuff you'd get anyway - weaning bits, toothbrushes, hat, teethers etc

This i think!

Labradoodlie · 05/11/2023 20:32

We have the same situation, and I’ll do :

Uneven stockings, because trying to balance things leads to madness

Wrapped up wipes, baby toothbrush ect

Recycled baby stuff from DD1 which she won’t remember (eg nice clothes the next size up)

SkalengeckOrSiegbarste · 05/11/2023 20:35

We did lots of weaning stuff including snacks and cutlery etc.
His stocking was fun as he got lots of pairs of socks and bibs. We did a special Xmas dinner bib and socks too. New toothbrush and toothpaste, toiletries, new bath sponge and individually wrapped bath ducks. Lots of what he got for Christmas (and what all our children have got for their first & second Xmas & birthdays) are necessities, consumables & clothing related. A pack of swimming nappies wrapped up were apparently very exciting for baby brother's 1st birthday as it meant he could go in the paddling pool with them.

mandydandy · 05/11/2023 20:43

Dd2s first Christmas I got her a fancy Christmas music box that now comes out each Christmas, she got a build a bear reindeer and a new book. We wrapped up some clothes and the high chair she was going to be needing soon just for dd1s benefit.

CameleonAreFightingBack · 05/11/2023 21:05

i just bought for dc2 as if dc1 wasn’t there but avoided the toys dc1 already had.
Let’s be honest, there is A LOT of possible toys, you’ll find some. Esp if you start going down the ‘gender’ lane (more cars and trains fir dc2 vs more d’OL,s fiR dc1)

I decided early on that being the second child shouldn’t mean dc2 shouldn’t get ‘his’ toys too.

Plus. Mines were slightly closer but dc1 ALWAYS found a renewed interest for toys he hadn’t touched fir months/years as soon as dc2 started to p,ay wth them 😂😂

Isthisexpected · 05/11/2023 21:10

This is putting an adult mindset onto a three year old. Literally wrap anything and explain it's just for the baby to enjoy opening something.

wouldthatbeworse · 05/11/2023 21:21

We just bought a load of weaning things. Lucky baby with all those stackable tupperwares

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 05/11/2023 21:34

My dd will be 9 months at Xmas. Her sister will be 8.5 years. I’ve made sure baby has some nice bits so dd1 doesn’t feel her sister was forgotten. She knows babies don’t need much but it’s nice her seeing her sister have gifts too. I don’t need clothing as family gave us 3 years worth of baby clothes so we’re fully set. Barely any baby toys as we had large age gap and didn’t think we’d ever have another.

I’ve got the following:

foam ball pit and balls (from PILS)
Sensory teething toy lion
Sensory zebra music toy
Picnic basket
Socks
Muslin pack
Thats not my unicorn book with toy unicorn set
Pack of pjs
Xmas pudding onesie
Fluffy blanket and hat set
Bath toy (from grandparents)

I might get her a toothbrush for her stocking as she’s trying to teeth at the moment but she’s not getting any through, she’s delayed.

Theoldwoman · 05/11/2023 21:37

Christmas ornament for the tree (add each year)
Sippy cup
Socks
Swimming towel
Size one outfit
