My two love Lidl's Hansel and Gretel one because it comes with a Hansel, Gretel and a witch. We always add extra sweets and icing pens.

Whatever you pick, buy Dr Oetker's edible baking glue to stick it together. It's easy to use and has never failed me yet.

@ItStillLooksLikeRainDear Fabulous price on that cutter kit

DD and I always get the Home Bargains one. Cheap and cheerful, but we found it had more sweets and icing than more expensive kits! Nicely flavoured biscuit as well.

Flying Tiger do a nice one as well, they also do a good strong edible glue.

MrsWhites · 30/10/2023 08:01

IKEA have got a lovely one this year, also sell a pack of different gingerbread people/animals. They are selling baking glue and decorating kits too. Very reasonably priced, think the house, the people, glue and decorating kit cost around £10.

I like the ikea and tiger ones.
The trick is to allow a lot of time for building it, and do it in stages.
Start with two walls, and prop with a box until firmly set. Then add the other walls and prop. Then one roof piece at a time.

I like to add crushed boiled sweets to make windows. Put parchment on a baking sheet, and sprinkle the crushed sweets into the window spaces and pop into a 180 oven for a few minutes. Let cool. Or you can just melt the sweets into windows shapes and glue with icing from the inside.

I also put a battery tea light inside - you want the ones that come on by themselves for 6 hours. Set it the evening before if you’re making the house in the morning.

I only involve the dc at the decorating stage, when the house is fully built and solid as they don’t have the patience. Obviously a pre-built house kit would be more sensible!

Wow amazing ! All great tips.
just wondering if I can be bothered to drive to ikea…..

I usually get the Asda kit, but definitely recommend extra icing and decorations. My dd will sit there for hours decorating! I've just looked on the Asda website and I can't find anything on there for this year but this was last year's https://groceries.asda.com/product/luxury-biscuits/asda-gingerbread-house-kit/1000383132847

The Morrisons one is £5 and really good, we had a halloween one too which was great.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 30/10/2023 15:08

Lidl one is tasty and m and s one. Need to add more sweets though.

Walnuthhwip · 30/10/2023 17:07

Costco is the best one I’ve ever had, came with tons of icing and sweets and was delicious, didn’t taste ‘cheap’ like some of them do

Goldenphoenix · 30/10/2023 17:28

We always have an Aldi pre built house. I buy loads more sweets to go onto it though as they are stingy with them in the kit.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 30/10/2023 19:12

Just bought one from Markies think it was about a fiver . I will buy extra tubes of icing and maybe some Smarties . My kids are adultsBlush , and I just like making them and everybody enjoys a bit of gingerbread house .

OtherSideofNowhere · 30/10/2023 20:20

I don’t know if they still make it, but I used a Bakedin kit last year. It was great because it’s basically a tent and it made it super easy to stick together, two triangle ends and two rectangles. I used a couple of tins from the cupboard to prop it up while the royal icing glue set.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 30/10/2023 20:23

IKEA is the best by far. Plus the instructions are done in the exact same style as IKEA furniture instructions which always makes me laugh 🤣

mixedpeel · 30/10/2023 22:01

Another vote for the ikea ones. Don’t know if they have them again this year, but last year they had a pack of mini houses so you could make a little village.

Saisong · 30/10/2023 22:04

Costco without a doubt. Lots of bits, loads of decorations. Kids absolutely love it.
Gingerbread House with Santa, Sleigh & Tree Kit, 1.74kg |... (costco.co.uk)

It does need some stiffer icing to stick together - or lots of support while it sets

Trumpton · 31/10/2023 14:09

I make little ones with the DGC and hang them on the hot choc mugs. Yes yes to Dr Oetker(sp) glue. I buy the Tesco gingerbread mix.

Been buying the IKEA ones for years. They also do little characters, sometimes little houses and they also have gingerbread tree decorations.

I always make my own caramel to glue the bits together. Sets in seconds and is tornado proof.

Then ice and directorate as desired.
