Teens & stockings

How have you adapted stockings as teens grow up?

I remember getting Clearasil and pants as a teen so I'm a bit reluctant to pad them out with that kind of thing, but both my teens (Y12 and Y10) have exec function issues. Giving them "things" for the sake of it, even nice ones, seem to stress them more than they really enjoy them. But I think they'd be gutted not to have stockings.

I am wondering about replacing their stockings with knitted ones that might be a bit easier to fill - or would it actually be harder to have less space for things?

I would love to hear what your teens get in their stockings, and how you have adapted things as they get older. I feel like we have done fidget toys to death, and there's only so much shower gel/socks/sweets you can give them.

Some previous hits in this house have been:

  • Ice stay cool gym towel
  • Emergency drying out bag for electronics (came in very handy when DSS dropped his phone in the sink!)
  • Trainer cleaning kit
  • Extra long lighting cables to charge phone from the sofa
  • Chocolate drinking straws for milk

Buying socks/deodorant /shower gel/dental products for Xmas is just odd. Do the gift recipients not buy these things for themselves during the year/have them brought for them if a minor ?

I buy these things for my teens for Xmas. It means they get more presents but it's not costing me extra money (as I'd have had to buy it anyway)and means they're not getting a load of tat that gets wasted. My teens love it.

In stockings I've got:
Knickers
Socks
Chocolate orange
Chocolate coins
Highlighter pens
Revision cards
Glue stick
Shampoo
A 'cracker' with 3 hot chocolate bombs in
Some make up bits
And I try to get a 'blind date with a book' type of book too (last year The Works had some)

I also add in any Xmas envelopes from family at the top of them.

Some fab ideas here, thanks everyone!

Thank you everyone, really kind of you to take the time. Definitely got some new ideas to think about now.

We only ever do around 8 presents in a stocking.
A nice shirt
Magazine
Bath bombs / bubble bath
Fancy socks
Fancy stationery
Chocolate

This year DD will have a sleich Dobby thanks to this board.

Remmy123 · 25/10/2023 11:20

Boys:

shin pads
nije gloves for football
Nike snood
skins for football
t shirts
pants
socks

last year I got my teen boys a iPhone holder from Amazon which was the best gift and use it every day

I don't buy crap for sake of it

@OfcourseitsaNC - erm no they arent

‘’Edible comes from the Latin word edere, which means “to eat.” Anything that people can safely eat is described as edible.’’

Just because you can get some drugs in edible form, it doesn’t mean the word edible is ‘drugs’. It’s just means it can be eaten. They same as a piece of chocolate

Erm, yes they are.

Of course I know the original use of the word edible. It has now evolved into a word with a duel meaning.

https://www.essex.police.uk/police-forces/essex-police/areas/essex-police/au/about-us/cannabis-edibles/

Lovemusic82 · 25/10/2023 11:30

‘Cannabis edibles’ are just that ‘edible cannabis’ doesn’t mean all edibles are drugs.

Anyway I’m sure my 19 year old would be happy with either.

Only on MN can a Christmas stocking thread descend into an argument about linguistics.

I must admit, I think the same. I do tend to put shower gel or bath bits in stockings but it has to be 'much-nicer-than-the-usual' stuff. My 3 DC generally share toiletries so they like to get their own special stuff in stockings.

But things like standard pants, socks, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant etc I've never done. I know for some people it's 'a tradition' so maybe those kids quite like it because it's their thing. But my kids would a think Santa had lost the plot the day they get a tube of Colgate in their stocking! Same applies to a can of pop which I regularly see on these boards. Each to their own though!

Adding the electronics drying-out bag to my list, thanks for that idea!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 25/10/2023 11:47

@OfcourseitsaNC, an edible is something that is suitable to be eaten. Yes, 'edibles' is a term given to drugs in edible form, but the much more usual meaning is something that is eaten.

Context is everything here...I think in a conversation about kids stockings we are not referring to drugs!!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 25/10/2023 11:50

In your link, the clue is in the word Cannabis.

Cannabis edibles = drugs that can be eaten.
Edibles = something that is suitable to eat.

Caspianberg · 25/10/2023 11:53

Yes I was planning on add an edible chocolate Santa in my 3 year olds stocking, not cannabis gummy bears

TeenDivided · 25/10/2023 11:54

re socks.

If buying because DD needs socks they would be boring multipack ones.
Whereas buying for birthday or Christmas means they are dog ones, or wolf, or cat etc. that I have gone out of my way to find. These ones bring joy to DD when she puts them on.

I wouldn't put standard items in, only special versions.

Yes, to me that's different though. I have a friend (and others) who says she sees it as an opportunity to refill the pants and socks drawer! So basically the multipack standard stuff. I'm always a bit Confused Do you not just do that when they need new socks and pants?!

I have in the past put in things like slipper socks, thermal socks, waterproof socks, novelty socks, football socks, grip socks, as again I see them as a bit different and more of a gift that would bring a bit of joy in a way that a standard multipack doesn't 😆

Lovemusic82 · 25/10/2023 14:14

My dd loves getting socks, they are always novelty ones though, sadly she now has way too many pairs of socks so I shouldn’t really buy her anymore. Maybe I will replace them with cannabis gummies 🙄 (joke…..they are much more expensive than socks).

It was only ever said in jest in the first place and pointing out the double entendre!

No one who uses them calls them cannabis edibles. They just call them edibles. The link specifies cannabis is the most popular drug used in edibles.

My humour clearly appeals to a different audience...

Following with interest

And also posting to thank @Aparecium @Caspianberg @Lovemusic82 @CoffeeChocolateWine for the giggle...you know edibles are drugs, right?

I personally wouldn't put edibles into my teens stockings, but each to their own. 😜

I’m just here for the ideas, but all the talk of edibles is making me imagine households full of stoned teenagers on Christmas Day 😂.

DS15 is a nightmare to buy for in general, he’s a techie, not into sports so I’m literally clutching at straws this Year as he pretty much has everything. Stockings are a nightmare because dd11 is easy to buy for with a list as long as the china wall where as he’s only asked for 2 switch games and a new AirPods case. We are getting him new AirPods so that’s fine…as a main present.
so far for his stocking he’s getting
a book about rollercoasters
a conspiracy theory book (he’s not a conspiracy theorist he just loves to read and basically take the piss)
a Deliveroo voucher
a roblox voucher
a box of hotel chocolat hot chocolate sachets
some lynx deo
lynx shower gel
Lindor balls
one of the switch games

still need a few more… gotta have a look around for something that appeals to his taste, It will probably come from menkind as he loves that shop.

How about a kinetic coaster? Have a look on ebay or etsy to see what they are, he might enjoy the novelty of it.
