What to serve with lamb on Christmas day

TabbyBeast · 22/10/2023 17:28

First time having lamb on Christmas day so want it to be a little more special than the usual Sunday roast fare. So! Looking for suggestions for sides that I can buy or are easy to prepare.

But...

DH has allergies. He has serious allergies to peas, sweetcorn, green beans, mange tout; basically anything in a pod.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Asparagus wrapped in pancetta and pan fried until crispy is vaguely reminiscent of pigs in blankets.

You can also do them in the oven if that’s easier.

FeverBeam · 22/10/2023 18:24

Mint jelly with lamb rather than redcurrant for me.

gotomomo · 22/10/2023 18:25

Red cabbage slow cooked/baked, roasted veggies, green veg that's safe for your ds, rosemary and thyme stuffing

XiCi · 22/10/2023 18:27

I like red cabbage with lamb and swede/carrot mash goes really well. I'd also do some steamed greens either spring greens or tenderstem broccoli. Potatoes would probably be dauphinoise

ButtonDownBev · 22/10/2023 18:27

We always have lamb every year as it's all of our favourite meat - especially our 6 year old 😂
We stick to traditional sides though for the most part.
We have mash instead of roasts as we find lamb rich and fatty so we don't want roast potatoes
I insist on cheesy leeks as it's my favourite
We also have brocoli, red cabbage, roasted sprouts and peas (I love peas with lamb)
Gravy, mint sauce, redcurrant jelly, stuffing and pigs in blankets. Also controversially Yorkshire puddings lol

gotomomo · 22/10/2023 18:29

And potatoes dauphinois works brilliantly though if you prefer roasties, do a cauliflower cheese instead as the creaminess really works well with the lamb. Finally the bisto best lamb gravy with a spoonful of redcurrant jelly stirred in plus chopped rosemary will earn you brownie points for little effort, stir in any juices if not too fatty

The gravy is a total tip, thanks!

Mint jelly with lamb rather than redcurrant for me.

We have both!

I think Greek style roast potatoes go well with lamb, they are not fatty like traditional roast potatoes. If you want a quick way, buy a prepared tray of parmentier potatoes and add a quartered lemon and some fresh thyme prior to cooking.

Keeping the whole meat course light and fresh tasting with plenty of flavour and colour, for vegetables I'd do asparagus and romanesco cauliflower, briefly steamed in the microwave.

AnOldCynic · 22/10/2023 19:38

Oh do a lamb shawarma with a whole leg. And sides to suit. Never done one but I've been meaning to for ages. With @NunsKnickers sides.

That's exactly what I came on to say! Greek lemon potatoes with roast lamb are an unbeatable connection! I was trawling recipes to find the one closest to what I do!

Potato dauphinoise goes beautifully with lamb.

I was going to say this. I bloody love it!

With the courgettes..I just mix parmesan with breadcrumbs and a dash of cayenne pepper or paprika. I cut the courgettes lengthways so they're kind of like chips/wedges. I dip in beaten egg, then the breadcrumb mixture. Bake in oven drizzled with olive oil .

I'm defy trying these, they sound delicious.

EdgeK · 22/10/2023 20:52

Love this thread!
Will only add thst pomegranate molasses (Waitrose, Ocado or any Turkish shop) and cumin is a beautiful marinade for lamb, if you're going for a Turkish or Greek theme.
Other than that, what time should I arrive?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 22/10/2023 20:57

Gratin dauphinois and the braised red cabbage a la Delia. The red cabbage can be made in advance and even frozen and reheated. When I do dauphinois (Not very often) I make double the recipe because everyone loves it and you can never have enough leftover. Roasted carrots if you feel the need for additional veg.

FitAt50 · 22/10/2023 20:57

Lamb, at Christmas - nooooooooooo

Lindy2 · 22/10/2023 21:01

Dauphinoise potatoes, red cabbage with apple and raisins, tender stem broccoli, cauliflower cheese, stuffing, Yorkshire puddings and lots of mint jelly. Also pigs in blankets - They don't go with lamb really but it's Christmas so they are compulsory.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 22/10/2023 21:09

Doing the lamb as a slow roast goes really nicely with ratatouille. Can even break with tradition and do orzo rather than potatoes.

For potatoes confit potatoes are divine as per The Quality Chop House recipe. They need to be prepped in advance and pressed overnight so on the day you just have to slice and crisp them. www.google.com/amp/s/www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/confit-potatoes-recipe/amp?bshm=rimc/2

DogInATent · 22/10/2023 21:10
  • Roast lamb studded with garlic, rosemary and anchovies - trust me on the anchovies, it's a leap of faith but worth it.
  • Braised red cabbage, or ratatouille (always goes well with lamb).
  • Spinach always works well with lamb.
  • Fondant or duchess potatoes.

I must admit, this was my first thought 🤣

Rina66 · 22/10/2023 21:19

We like creamed leeks here, with lamb or pork, as I like my cauliflower to be tossed in olive oil, salt and lemon juice.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 22/10/2023 21:36

Ooh yes - spinach is a good shout. It's good with a grating of nutmeg which will go beautifully with the dauphinois potatoes too.
