Considering buying my DC a Switch for Christmas but I am clueless when it comes to gaming! Please can someone tell me what I'd need to buy, what comes with the main console and what doesn't? Thanks!

@coxesorangepippin I’d say that was the perfect age to be honest!

I originally orders from Asda. its due with my shopping next wednesday, but it also says out of stock onlne....so im wondering if it will arrive?

But to be honest the VERY deal here is much better value if you open an account and get the 20% off

I would want to instantly pay and close the account, has anyone had any experience of that?

I ordered it on Friday for Monday delivery and on Sunday I got an email saying some of my items were out of stock

Btw this is not the oled version. I’ve paid 299 for the oled + Mario kart online in Argos.

We are not gamers either so Can I just ask... we have an new Xbox arrived and are wondering can this work for our 6 year old, will he be able to use it do you think ?

MissGroves · 23/11/2023 09:37

I’ve just bought a controller (like the sort that comes with Xbox) for her to use when she plays Minecraft etc on the tv.

Rollinghill · 23/11/2023 09:37

Thanks OP for the thread I needed, and thanks to all the knowledgeable posters!

To clarify, the advice so far is to get the full Switch, HDMI cable for TV, +/- extra joycons. Set up before Christmas with family accounts.

I haven't quite understood the OLED thing - is there a screen on the switch as well?

TheGirlWhoLived · 23/11/2023 10:35

@Rollinghill the hdmi comes with it so you’ll just need the switch. options are

switch ‘lite’ which is cheaper, purely handheld, no ability to play multiplayer and no ability to dock to tv to play.

standard switch comes in at about £240, ability for two players to play on the tv or can be played in handheld mode.

Oled switch comes in at about £280, this plays the same games as the other switches, all that changes is the handheld screen is bigger and sharper in terms of picture. Two players can play and can dock to tv or be played in handheld mode. This also has slightly more memory than the standard switch (useful for downloading games and for game data)

you can up your storage on the standard or oled switch at any time by getting a memory card. I’d start with what you’ve got and get a memory card if you need to in the future, unless you wanted to download ALL the games on Christmas Day!

For more people to play you will need an extra set of Joy Con controllers. I’d always pick Nintendo but there are third party ones out there. An extra set of Nintendo joycons comes in at about £60 and will add another 2 players to your switch. 4 is the maximum players you can have on any one game.

the only other thing worth considering if you are planning playing 4 player a lot is an external joy con charger. They’re usually about £10-15 and plug in via usb to the switch. Ours can charge 4 controllers at once which is handy! Otherwise they charge when they are attached to the switch whilst docked so it’s only slightly more faff

These are ours for comparison. The kids have the standard switch and I have the oled (white controllers)

They look the same hooked up to the tv so it just depends what takes your fancy

Puddlelane123 · 23/11/2023 12:01

Assuming I got the lites is there really no way to play multiplayer on them? I thought from reading there was a way but that might influence me. I mainly wanted them for long car journeys we do so felt the lites would be better…

Related question (and apologies if it has been answered), if I got them a lite each would I also have to duplicate each game card?

Yes you can play multiplayer, I play multiplayer games on my lite all the time, i think what the pp meant you can't have several people playing in the same device at once in split screen on something like Mario Kart but if you means one thing like two children each with their own switch lite to play multiplayer you absolutely can do that.

Puddlelane123 · 23/11/2023 12:31

Thanks @NotInTheMoodForIt - really helpful. Yes ideally I would like them to be able to play multiplayer with each other, but on their own device if that makes sense.

Related question, do I need to duplicate each game? And also, I’m probably being totally thick but when I went on the Nintendo website I couldnt see a way to filter games to ensure I’m only looking at the ones suitable for the lite version?

NotInTheMoodForIt · 23/11/2023 12:33

And yes @Puddlelane123 you'd need individual cards to play the same game at the same time.

TheGirlWhoLived · 23/11/2023 12:39

Ah sorry what I meant was you can’t play on the same one with the lite - should have clarified! I think all of them are suitable for the lite? You’ll need eg 2 copies of Mario kart to play Mario against each other

Puddlelane123 · 23/11/2023 12:44

Ah I see, thankyou! Can you tell I’m new at this 🤣

I know on pyscial copies on the boxes there's a logo on the back that tells you which systems it's compatible with.

I've included a photo of the back of Mario kart box to show what I mean, is there anything like that in the e store?.

It's seems you can actually have two players playing at the same time on the same switch lite too according that box, Ive just loaded and tried on my lite and if dd pairs her joycons to my switch it lets me select for us to both play on my lite but it isn't fun hunched round the lite

NotInTheMoodForIt · 23/11/2023 12:50

Ignore my last post about two players on same lite, My lite has froze up once dds joycons paired and we're stuck on the mode selection 😂

NotInTheMoodForIt · 23/11/2023 12:59

So after a quick google it's def possible to have two played play on the same lite for Mario Kart. But you need two separate controllers to pair to the lite.

Dd has just messed about and if she pairs both her joycons to my lite and then it works. My mistake earlier was I was trying to control from my actual switch for me which is why it didn't work. She's sent me a photo of my lite with Mario kart in two players on save device. I need a joycon too. It's a faff, but possible.
