I struggle every year for ideas for my husband, not helped by the fact his birthday is on New Year’s Day so have two lots of presents to sort.

this year it’s also his 30th so im feeling the pressure.

I’d love to get him something really thoughtful but feel like I’ve exhausted all options. Is there something you’ve got your partner/husband that they’ve loved?

ideas for others for inspiration I’ve done that went down well; weekends away, photo albums of our son, framed prints made by my son, coffees from all over the world and luxury watches.

I have a dad like this. Wealthy and can buy himself what he likes. This year, as he is 84 and I've run out of ideas, I'm buying him a Lordship. He's earned it for being an all round amazing Dad and a lovely human. He'll even get a bit of land with the title!

GettingStuffed · 07/10/2023 21:19

My husband gets a season ticket to his favourite sports team .

Lagershandy · 07/10/2023 21:32

We buy each other seats in business class when we go on holiday! (We have been married a long time, so we have eventually run out of ideas! )

Things I’ve bought my husband over the years (also a January birthday): good quality chefs knives (he’s a keen cook); wallet; bags; ski trip & gear; record player; whiskey decanter & glasses; weekends away (usually in Europe, January is a cheap time to travel); books (he has a preferred genre so I try to look for ones he hadn’t read yet); athleisure wear; nice clothes; annual diary.

The ski trip was for his 30th, and the week leading up to his birthday I gave him something small every day (not necessarily a gift, one day I made his favourite breakfast etc. And I gave him a paper cut out of a letter) over the week the letters spelled out where we were going to (he didn’t get it until the day we were leaving though 🕵️‍♀️). However I think it helped build excitement and make it feel a bit more special. Also organised a surprise party for the weekend after. I probably peaked there to be honest, his birthdays since have not been as elaborate.

This year he will be getting a new leather wallet and I’m debating a soda stream as he’s been dropping hints.

So many people I know have done an "advent calendar" of sorts. So like 30 days of something he loves ( could be really small like his favourite snack, or a few cans of his fave fizz upto something nicer like a massage voucher/Ann summers voucher (just saying..) and on the last day could be something extra special like a day trip somewhere fun.
My husband prefers day trips out (as we still have little kiddos and they just settle better at home), so one year we gifted him with a day out each month for a year and that's been our favourite. Doesn't HAVE to be pricey, for example a trip to the beach with money in an envelope for fish and chips and ice cream, or Fort building in a forest (seriously- the inner child in a 30 year old man is still there lol), dinner out at a place you've never been to, a games cafe (if you like board games), an axe throwing evening with some beers etc.

My DH has really liked (he prefers experience gifts rather than material items):

Theatre tickets
Drive a tank experience
Bletchley Park tickets
Star Wars exhibition tickets
A small hamper of his fave chocolates

Oysterbabe · 09/10/2023 07:06

I got DH a track session at Siverstone. This year he's getting a Lego McLaren and a coffee machine (he also has a winter birthday)

AnneButNotHathaway · 09/10/2023 10:02

For Christmas I'd go with something more universal: like gloves and scarf set, aftershave set, big box of his favorite chocolate, bottle of good wine, etc.

Birthdaywise, think of something more personalized. Tickets to a show he would love to attend, maybe planning a small getaway for you both, hobby related items (season pass to his favorite sporting event/team, gift cards to stores he's frequent at, subscription to programs he might need for work like passport photo makers or slideshow makers, gym membership upgrade, tools etc).

Making a birthday video with photos and videos of him would be a niсу adding, too.

With the coffee thing I'm guessing he might already have a bean to cup machine? I got one for DH last year (he also has a festive period birthday) and it was a massive hit.

Well if he has "everything" try arranging a day helping out at a soup kitchen for the homeless at Christmas - it's a humbling and thought provoking experience - one that will linger longer in the mind than any material thing.

Daisychain789 · 16/10/2023 20:26

Thanks for all the suggestions! I’ve booked a city break with tickets for his favourite comedian and am working my way through some of the other ideas

The best present we ever gave each other was to agree not to buy presents any more. Instead we spend the day together doing something we'll both enjoy along the lines of a gallery, good food, a trip somewhere special.

Theoldwrinkley · 16/10/2023 20:59

Similar man to buy for, albeit a bit older! Also Dec 19 birthday. Best gift was from last year, a cheese gift subscription. Box of 5 cheeses arrives about 19th of each month. He says it's like having a birthday each month!

Ibizafun · 16/10/2023 21:06

My dh buys certain whiskies as investment. Do some reading up and buy him a bottle? I bought mine a lovely man bag to take on holidays. Or else a beautiful pair of Italian shoes?

🙄

Also, buy him a lump of dog shit and ask him to dispose of it. Very humbling.
