Anybody else who will be working on Christmas Day?

I’m a nurse and I’ve been put in to work Christmas Day. I don’t mind too much, DS will be with his dad but I’ve never worked it before and feel a little bit weird about it. I’m doing 7-5 so nothing dramatic, DP will go to his mums for dinner and he waiting for me at home with leftovers and a massive baileys!

Not me, but ds(19) is now working PT as bar staff in a hotel while at uni and will be working throughout the holidays including Christmas day. He doesn't know his shifts yet which is a bit irritating as I want to start planning when we see family, when we can have our "Christmas" and when best to book my annual leave.

Yes I will be. Men's prison. Can guarantee it will be a full on shift

I'll be " Hotel 1 " 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

I always work Christmas , regime is a little more relaxed , good spirits , less codes

And now less hooch as we are sugar apple and orange free

I work in a care home. I'm in early in Boxing Day this year.
Out of interest do people get more money for Christmas Day, Boxing day etc? We get nothing extra whatsoever....

Londonnight · 05/10/2023 06:22

I'm a housekeeper in a hospital and will be working Christmas day and Boxing day.

fourelementary · 05/10/2023 07:42

Yes we get more as Christmas is a public holiday. That’s shocking you don’t get extra…

paranoidnamechanger · 05/10/2023 07:53

Health and social care worker here too. I don’t mind it at all, Christmas is just another day to me. The best thing about it is double time pay.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 05/10/2023 09:32

Yes, been a nurse for 13 years and expect to work Christmas Day one year and Boxing Day the next!
I like to be 'festive' for the whole of December! My birthday is December also!

I think of it as just one day! Make most of my other days off! And that it's pretty shitty to be poorly at Christmas and needing a nurse to come to your house (I'm an NP in the community who treats people with minor injury and illness at home, unplanned DN calls, home IV's and OOH palliative care)

My dad was a police officer so often missed Christmas dinner etc but we made up for it in other ways!

Normally we have a nice shift! Put some tinsel in my hair and hopefully cheer some folk up! We also bring in stuff for breakfast if we're an early shift or buffet if we're late or night shift

I’ll be working Christmas Day in a children’s home. I’ve worked christmas the last 5 years as we’re not allowed time off over the festive period and I always volunteer so that those with kids can have the day off. It’s an incredibly sad time over Christmas as all our kids are with us due to their parents inability to look after them. We try hard to build traditions and have a nice time, some kids will have family who they can spend the day with and they’ll get gifts from but most of them won’t get as much as a card or a message from their own parents. It’s heartbreaking.

HCA working Christmas Day. Worked NY last year so will do this one. Will have Christmas on NY as going to visit son and his partner in Scotland for The Bells.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 05/10/2023 21:41

I’m on Christmas Eve, day and Boxing Day, albeit only half days. A little sad for my kids but it’s important to be there for my patients and a little continuity will help

I'm working my first Christmas (well since I was a teenage waitress!) & Boxing days this year. I work in a police control room. My shift is 6.30am-4pm. My DH doesn't want to celebrate another day (he has his reasons but I'm still frustrated by it) so I'm facing the prospect of not being there for presents etc.

The job is fab so far but I am feeling sad about missing Christmas with the kids and hope we can come to a compromise. It's a kick in the teeth as I'll be the one buying and wrapping and organising and food shopping too!?!

That really isn't fair of your husband. Can't you have the presents on Christmas Eve evening? I think I would bring them out then actually! They could have a stocking on Christmas morning.

Nothing extra for any bank hol including Xmas. I've worked everyone this year, inc the extra coronatiion ones. The law is they don't have to pay any extra or give an extra day.

I often do but we do shifts and I try to get the earlier one that allows me to get home around 4pm and we have an evening Christmas meal and gifts. It’s fun. The DC and DH watch films, go for a walk and do the cooking ready for me to get home, and visit their grandparents in the morning (DH parents) so there are some gifts then.

EnterNowhere · 02/11/2023 17:07

I am working Christmas Day 2.30-11 but will hopefully get off earlier. Will be able to do presents with my 4 y/o and we've got an early lunch booked. I work as an emergency dispatcher - hoping it will be relatively Q. We will hopefully have food and should be a good atmosphere. It works out about £300 extra, so will treat us and book a nice day out or short break with the money when I get paid.

supafish · 02/11/2023 17:10

Yes , me on a 12 and a half hour shift as a Marie curie nurse . Will be fine , having my Xmas on Xmas eve .

Ivyiris · 23/12/2023 12:50

I work every other year and working this one on back shift so get to see the magic in the morning got a 6&4 year old. It's still gutting missing the whole day but needs must. I'm a nurse as well.

YorkshireLandlady · 23/12/2023 14:31

Run a pub, so am working.
Only time I've not in last 25+ years was the one we were closed in lockdown.
Just drinks at lunchtime, cleaning up from xmas eve first thing & then a few drinks with mostly local regulars so not all bad.
After that, clear down, pjs, food & wine on sofa with the dog ready tp start again boxing day

I'm still working but since writing thr above post, I have now volunteered for a shift slide so am working 10am-7pm om Christmas day. My colleagues think I'm mad as they all want to get home and stuck into the turkey & booze but I don't drink so I'm happy with getting to do Santa in the morning then a nice breakfast with the kids before work then steak & board games in the evening!

NormaSnickers · 24/12/2023 00:26

Yep, working a late shift (1-9pm) as a nurse on a ward caring for patients with advanced Dementia. Their behaviour and care needs don’t change just because it’s Christmas so I expect we’ll be as busy as usual but we’re all taking food in and hopefully will find time to sit and spend time all together. Many of our patients won’t get visitors so it’s really important to make their day as special as possible.

Begonias · 24/12/2023 00:48

I'm working both Christmas and Boxing day. I wasn't on the rota this year as I worked both days last year but I'm having to go in due to staff shortages. I'll be cooking early morning so that the teens can have their Christmas meal at a reasonable time whilst I'm at work. Taking some food in for colleagues so it can feel like it's a special day!

On a positive at least I won't be spending money at the sales if I'm at work for 12 hour shifts😆

anybloodyname · 26/12/2023 06:39

I'm also a nurse who work Sunday Monday and today

Don't think I'm a hero but do appreciate that my family recognise I give up that time with them to help others and let my staff with young children be at home while my older children do their thing

It's teamwork
