No christmas tree how else can I decorate living room?

My living room is small so this year the tree is going in the conservatory which is fine but I want the living room to still feel christmasy.
Any ideas? I was thinking maybe a garland on the mantlepiece but the ones I've seen are £££s

This one on Amazon is only £6.99. Is that the sort of thing you mean?

Personally, I love trad slightly tasteless decorations. so I'd make paper chains or crepe paper garlands with dc and string them up across the ceiling.

Or if DC are older you could be far more tasteful and go for real greenery Christmas tree sellers often give away or sell very cheaply loose branches which you can trim down to make a display of real fir then add candles and a few giant baubles.

Twinkly lights and some real foliage (I make a candle holder each year with leftover door wreath supplies) and a bunch of festive greenery and berries in a vase.

Caspianberg · 01/10/2023 10:50

a Poinsettia plant is nice.

You can usually go to anywhere that’s sells real Chrismas trees and they will give away or sell for cheap off cut small branches for you to use on mantle piece. Just cut with garden clippers to fit along according to side. Add some Christmas tree decorations like baubles in between branches. Add pine cones

Festive berries and greenery in a vase is a great idea. I've never had a poinsettia plant so that's something I'll get.
I'm looking for subtle but festive, sometimes with everything squeezed in it can look like Santa's grotto, not the look I'm going for this year.

When we first moved into this house we had no living room tree (later bought a slimline, pre-lit one in the sale).
I bought a £5 garland from B&M (was essentially twine with pine cones, berries, wooden stars and some Holly on it), attached some extra greenery and wrapped a set of berry lights around it. That on the mantle piece with a little red lantern with battery tea light candles on either end looks very festive.

Lights in the window, candles in festive jars/holders and touches of greenery are always nice (tucked on the corner of pictures on the wall etc), plus cushions and blankets (not necessarily Christmassy but tartan/green/red etc).

Or you could always go the more is more route, hang the old school foil decs from the ceiling, paper chains, bunting, fairy lights hung everywhere etc.

Not everyone's cup of tea (and wouldn't suit every house) but our old house was Victorian and had very high ceilings.
One year, to cheer me up, DH hung a set of fairy lights from our hallway ceiling, having them crisscrossed from side to side.
Sounds weird but the effect was really nice Xmas Smile

I use stuff from our gardens or whilst out in the woods etc

I bought a plain garland I think it was about £15 and wrapped lights around it, glued baubles to it and clipped some decorations from the garden centre on. It looks lovely and festive

Gettingbysomehow · 01/10/2023 11:16

Im thinking about getting one of those artificial tall very thin trees you can get that will fit into a very small corner. They look OK.

TheGirlWhoLived · 01/10/2023 11:28

It depends on what you mean by £££ but I got a great bushy garland last year from we R Christmas I think for £50. It’s prelit too so no faff with lights

Dd always makes us a dressing for our mantelpiece with the off cuts from the lower branches of our tree. She ties them together using wide festive ribbon that I usually have from Costco so no need to buy anything extra, and then she weaves in tiny battery operated lights (could be a fire hazard so I’m not going to recommend it but it’s what we do!!) and then uses floristry wire to tie on decorations. It always looks so lovely and just uses up bits that we have already.
We do have our tree in our front room but also hang lights in the bay windows and I put my tall nutcrackers guarding the fire. I’ve also got some star bell things (in the shape of a star but constructed of lots of rows of little bells) that I hang from some of the window handles.

I immediately thought of this wall "tree".

Our tree goes in the dining room but our tiny living room looks very festive. We have a garland on the mantel, paper chains on every book shelf, some festive bunting strung round the room. We also have snow globes on the hearth, a nativity on the windowsill, candles, couple of Christmas cushions, doorstop, some willow decorations I made a few years ago (string of stars across the curtain rail, mini trees on the shelves, couple of reindeer beneath the television) and I also put some festive scents in there via either a reed diffuser or some pot pourri.

It's my favourite room at Christmas.

The other effective decoration (and smells glorious) is hyacinths grown in multicoloured glass vases like the ones pictured. I arrange them with candles/tealights and they look so festive.

Lights are always Christmasy.
I got a wall tree from Homebase last year, we had a new puppy so didn't want a big tree out.

Battery fairy lights in a clear glass vase look so pretty and are a pretty cheap option. Stick some Christmas themed cushions and a throw in your sofa and it will look festive and cosy.

Don’t do what I did and cut ivy. Wasn’t very Sunday supplement, more invasion of the creepy crawlies!

AnneButNotHathaway · 05/12/2023 11:00

Fairy lights
Jar lights (they look VERY pretty!)
You can also use a christmas collage maker to create picture collages (family pictures or scenes from Christmas movies), print them out and put on the walls
Or you can add Christmas backgrounds to family photos (there is a guide on that) and print them out as well
There are also various DIY ideas for wall decor if you'd like to start a creative project!

That is so pretty. I've never seen this before. I'm going to do one too. Thank you for the fantastic idea and inspiration.

In my Doctors surgery they have pinned green fabric zig zagging about so it looks like a Christmas tree on the wall and pinned on some decorations. Whoever did it has done a very good job and it wouldn’t look out of place in a designer boutique.

Marionberry · 05/12/2023 11:28

@Minttee Poinsettia's are extremely poisonous to cats, I love them but my cat loves chewing plants so I just can’t have them. Just in case you have a kitty.

Zamzamzamdeedah · 05/12/2023 11:28

My mum has flat wall hanging "tree" from garlands and such. Looks smashing

Goldmember · 05/12/2023 14:54

You could always go with a Danny Dev-tree-to? 🎄

A garland over the mantle piece with lights and baubles looks great. If you don’t want to buy one, a few pieces of tinsel with lights wrapped around them looks good too as a garland (colours that match your decor works best).

Ive used a large glass candle holder before (like this in the photo). Put a set of Christmas lights inside and then fill it completely with baubles. Looks great on a windowsill.

A Christmas Twig? We find the branchiest branch in the woods, spray it white or silver or gold and then dangle decorations off it
