Ideas for Christmas events for a toddler

Hi all,

I'm looking for ideas for Christmas events that a toddler (nearly 2) would enjoy, I've been googling but not found much inspiration!
We've got a visit to Santa booked.
We don't live anywhere near a Polar Express type event (and it would probably be booked up now anyway!).
The nearest Christmas light trail at a National Trust type place is about 50 minutes drive, I'm wondering if it's worth it.
There are Christmas markets happening in our town and nearby towns but I'm not sure he'll get much out of those.
I think he's too young for Panto.

Or am I overthinking it and shouldn't be putting pressure on myself to have a full diary of Christmas events for a two year old!

Thanks for any advice!

I personally think there is no need to get caught up in all the events and things you see on social media at this age. Little one will enjoy looking at Christmas lights, some Christmas baking like ginger bread or mince pies, Singing Christmas songs, advent calendar etc. at that age they don't really know what's going on and there's not need to spend out unless you really want to!

We've enjoyed making our own little family traditions.

We did a national trust lights trail when my eldest was just 2. He loved it and it was fun but he didn't really understand it and he had the mother of all tantrums when we got to the end!

Don’t over think it. DD was nearly 3 last year and by far her best memory of Christmas (she still talks about it) was the 10 mins we spent choosing a tree in the local florists.

Father Christmas terrified her. The Kew light trail (which everyone raves about and is £££) was too late for her, so she sat grumpily in her buggy all the way around then lost it on the tube home.

Keep it very simple, you DD is still very little. Can you take her for a walk to see all the lights in your local area, in our area people put up some fantastic lights.
Borrow some Christmas books from the library and read them throughout December. CBBC usually put a very child friendly pantomime on television to watch on Christmas Eve.

I agree you don't need to do too much with a toddler, although if you use Facebook your local FB group(s) might be a good place to start.

Some of our local garden centres have some lovely Christmas displays (eg singing reindeer), and a wander around looking at the Christmas trees with their lights and baubles is a free and easy trip.

Thank you all! Some lovely ideas and some good reminders that I shouldn't get caught up in the Instagram idea of perfect family Christmas outings!

Drive around places with decorated houses if there's streets near you. Garden centre with lots of displays? Stick to free stuff so young, they really aren't interested to be honest

Not sure where roughly you are, I'm sure people can share free toddler friendly ideas - perhaps we should have a free Christmas stuff thread.

We still have this issue as dsd has severe learning difficulties, her favourite this is the garden centre and hot chocolate

Yes don't pay for too many things. When DD was little she used to love a drive/stroll to see roads with lots of lights/inflatable Santas in the houses!

DS is going to be about two and a half, we've booked a Santa breakfast at the garden centre (if he doesn't like the Santa, he will like the breakfast!) And then it will just be looking at the Christmas lights, watching Christmas stories, maybe one of the library Christmas craft afternoons. I wanted to make Christmas magical for him this year but after thinking about it I can do that without spending £££!
