Hello everyone,

I am looking for ideas for my son for Christmas he is five, soon to be six. He doesn’t play with typical “boy “ toys. He is very much into learning, he is very bright for his age. He loves the alphabet, writing, reading and maths. Knows all his times tables. Has any one got any ideas? Thank you so much :-)

Does he like construction? Magnetic tiles are loved in our house as well as lego and am looking at knex maybe for this Christmas

Sam202012 · 09/09/2023 11:35

He does love lego, thank you! I will check out knex as well :-)

Just a few ideas 😀

Sea Monkeys
Magnetic dartboard
Look inside books
Vtech camera
Dobble
Smyths have some arcade games which are really good and well used at our house

My son is similar age. Loves Lego, bike, scooter, books and marble run.
Gravitrax looks good too, more advanced than marble run.

Not sure yet what he’ll ask for, I’ve picked up an analog watch and the vtech camera so far. Watching this thread for more inspiration.

yoshiblue · 09/09/2023 14:08

Agree with Lego and Gravitrax. Have you tried other things he could build like Brio train track, Lego train tracks?

What about board games? My son sounds similar to yours and like all sorts of board games. Happy to recommend some?

Also look at Think Fun games and IQ Puzzler type games.

Sam202012 · 09/09/2023 14:34

Thank you everyone, some great ideas. I have also been recommended the VTech challenger laptop which is reduced at the minute so will look at that. He also loves maths activity books and writing books so will stock up on these for stocking fillers xx

I've got my nearly 6 year old a Bookeez - they can write and illustrate their own stories then bind together. She also loves the Orchard games, there are some for older children such as telling the time (think it's called what's the time Mr Wolf), money match cafe, times tables, and magic maths which he might enjoy if theyre not too easy for him.

Sam202012 · 09/09/2023 17:15

Thank you, I’ve got the globe also. Hoping he likes it. Xx

Just seen bookeez, this is definitely something he would love as he loves reading and writing but I can’t find a boy version lol! He loves the orchard stuff too but some are bit easy for him now xx

If you type horrid Henry Bookeez onto Amazon they have a yellow and blue one that looks more boyish, not sure what parts are Horrid Henry though x

Sam202012 · 09/09/2023 17:54

Thank you, I think I will order it ! Xx

My 5 year old loves his Yoto player, lots of different types of stories on there to listen too educational and none educational. I'd wait to see how they are priced in the Black Friday sale though if looking to buy new.

Sam202012 · 09/09/2023 19:48

Thank you , we have tonie. Which he likes, but I’ve heard that yotos are better. Wished I had got that x

Kapla.
Chess set. We got dc1 a magnetic travel set for his 6th birthday. It was his favourite gift.
Board gamewise Junior ticket to Ride and My first Carcassonne are firm favourites in our house but I'd also consider the adult versions.
Smart puzzles. We have a couple of them. Portable, lots of levels to work through and fun.

Was coming on to suggest chess..sounds like it could become a favourite. Also for his stocking a pack of cards as he sounds like a candidate for lots of card games.
What about a musical instrument?

Sam202012 · 10/09/2023 20:48

Thank you, his dad is very musical and has tried to get him into playing an instrument before , he hasn’t shown much interest. He loves cards though and chess sounds like a good idea :-). He absolutely loves maths, there doesn’t seem to be many maths based toys available for his age or upwards. X

IDEAL | Tapes: The family measuring and guessing game, where size matters! | Family Games | Party Games | For 2-8 Players | Ages 8+ https://amzn.eu/d/7gHxkoE

My little number fan (also a 5yo boy) loves this game

MsFrog · 10/09/2023 21:27

Oh and this as well Deal: Thinkfun Math Dice Junior - Mental Maths Game for Boys & Girls Age 6 Years Up - Educational Activities https://amzn.eu/d/0pRGGSE.

And another brilliant gift we got him were dominoes meant for building. He watched lots of videos on YouTube and got really into it - this is an excellent set https://amzn.eu/d/f2Duue2

And he's also well into Rubix Cubes - a 3x3 or even a little 2x2 might be fun for him, and you can get nice books on learning to solve them. There's videos on YouTube as well, but the books are nice for kids and something to capture his interest, maybe, if he's bright and mathematically minded
