Board games

Looking for 1-2 for me and 2DC 9 and 6 but older DC has struggles with reading and will struggle with complex instructions.

looking for something suitable for the 3 f us but also potentially they could play together on those rare occasions where they aren’t fighting.

Looking for something short (monopoly drives me crazy) to play and interesting/fun, without too many complicated rules.

We love board games!
A good co-operative game (so no arguing!) is Castle Panic
some others easy enough to play are
Ticket to ride
Copenhagan
Project L
Splendor
Azul
There are also lots of fun card games like
cockroach poker
expoding kittens
love letters

Definitely Dobble!

Would Rummikub be too much for your older DC?

Simplyuglyineveryway · 28/08/2023 14:19

Frustration
Labrynth
Rummikub
Uno
Dobble

bluebird3 · 28/08/2023 14:21

Forbidden island is really good. It's cooperative so you win or lose as a team which is nice so no fighting and everyone can help each other. It's nice for kids and is interesting for adults too.

SBAM · 28/08/2023 14:21

Rhino hero
river dragons
takenoko

Longwhiskers · 28/08/2023 14:22

We love the sock game! Play it quite often with my 5 and 8 year old. You divide into teams and spin a pointer to tell you whcih item to pull out of the long sock, just by feel. The other team has the identical sock and item to find - a cork, a marble, a rubber band etc. whoever wins advances their team’s counter one place up the board. Couldn’t be simpler! https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9443819

Castle panic looks good, is the adults version simple or would junior be a better option? Futration tolerance is not high in the household ☺️

Lots of great suggestions I will take a look at them all. Thank you.

we’ve never played the junior version but my youngest was 8 when we first played it & was easy for her to pick up.
There are some good ‘how to play’ explanations on YouTube that talk you through the game, might be worth having a look before you decide.

Doveylc · 29/08/2023 03:58

Dinky linkee is a favourite in our house.

Autieangel · 29/08/2023 06:17

We have mario game of life which is really easy and the kids love Mario.

Also -

Forbidden island
The mind
Labyrinth

I play a lot of board games. I would say that of the suggestions above, some will definitely be too complex for a 6 year old who struggles with reading and attention.

I would not go for: Ticket to Ride, Forbidden Island, Azul, Splendor, Carcassonne or Quacks of Quidlinberg. These are all games that need a bit of attention/ strategy and following rules.

I'd go for something quick and simple, like Dungeon Mayhem, Dobble, Uno, Exploding Kittens, Throw Throw Burrito, Labyrinth, Herd Mentality, Yo Sushi.

If you like the idea of Ticket to Ride, there is a version for kids called 'Ticket to Ride First Journey' which might be good (haven't played it).

There is also game called 'Camel Up' that I've had my eye on - haven't played it - but that could be a fun one (about camel racing!)

Lillianofthevalley · 29/08/2023 06:52

Mind. It's very simple but great fun..I have played with lots of people and everyone far has really enjoyed it!!

ColdinNovember · 29/08/2023 12:12

Thanks, Labyrinth seems a popular suggestion so will definitely get that. I think Rummikub might be a good shout too. It has some similarities to Uno which we all enjoy.

Qwirkle
Skyjo
Mexican Train dominoes
dobble

JuneBeWonderful · 29/08/2023 14:02

Exploding Kittens whilst awesome does depend on whether a child is happy to lose early on and be out. Castle Panic is fairly easy strategics wise. Forbidden Island we used to not start on the flood level they suggest but lower to give the children a chance against the island but we like co-op games where you work together.

Some games we used to double up for so Dh and one child vs me and one child. Each person in the pair gets their turn but has the assistance of the adult, we started that with games like Bananagrams.

Dobble is good as is Pictureka.

SmallestInTheClass · 29/08/2023 14:10

We like a couple of cooperative games: Outfoxed and Cauldron Quest and now they are older Forbidden Island.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 29/08/2023 22:37

Games we play with both dc (13 and 7) that I haven’t seen mentioned yet:
Kingdomino
Cubluro tricky ways (our favourite at the moment, you compete to create the longest marble run)
Parchis (Spanish Ludo)
Minecraft Heroes of the Village (probably the best coop for a 6 year old, even dh a hardcore board game nerd loves it)

Labyrinth.
Blockus
Quirkle

Taco cat goat cheese pizza

Does blokus work ok with 2 or 3 players?

Dobble and junior labyrinth are good and don't require any reading.

I'm yet to meet a kid who doesn't like throw throw burrito.

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/09/2023 20:10

Uno
Trivial Pursuit junior
