Adult male. Absolutely loves trains.
Does anyone have any ideas for train related presents?

It’s august… but a voucher to the Transport Museum in London, or a voucher for a steam train ride.

WestOfWestminster · 24/08/2023 21:48

An anorak?

SugarMiceInTheRain · 24/08/2023 21:51

Afternoon tea on a steam train went down a treat with one of my good friends who is a train enthusiast.

However I'm now stuck for ideas for his birthday next year!

KohlaParasaurus · 24/08/2023 21:51

If you've got a generous budget ... midlandpullman.com/trips-tours/

Or an original/limited edition print artwork of one of his favourite trains.

My dad is a train enthusiast and the problem with buying him anything is that he already has loads of train-related stuff! If I see a book I think he might like I have to ask him if he wants it or it would be a duplicate (or somehow not quite right).

The best train-related present we got him was a go driving a steam train for his 50th birthday. He absolutely loved it!

MugsMug · 24/08/2023 21:52

Wonder whether we could get a sticky thread asking people not to come onto the Christmas board to tell people it’s too early to think about Christmas 😂

The TFL shop has nice vintage maps and posters.

thesandwich · 24/08/2023 21:56

Etsy have lots of stuff- personalised station signs with your chosen name etc.

Diplidocus4 · 24/08/2023 21:59

Depending on budget there are several steam railways that do "driver" days

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 24/08/2023 22:00

Is there a heritage steam railway near to where he lives? They probably have a range of gifts, memberships and vouchers.

Or if not one nearby, does any steam railway offer weekend experiences that family could club together to buy, with accommodation?

WandaWonder · 24/08/2023 22:04

Train lovers puzzle book, it is a hardback blue book

Search vintage railway posters on Amazon and there are lots of lovely ones.

A magazine subscription to a railway magazine

SkaneTos · 24/08/2023 22:38

A special train ride with one of those older trains in beautiful scenery, perhaps?

Or, a visit to one of those interesting train stations from the tv documentary series "The Architecture the Railways Built".

ShellySarah · 24/08/2023 22:44

Thank you. Some wonderful ideas.

He gets all hung up on minutiae and likes timetables etc

Trip to York to the National Railway Museum.

ShowOfHands · 24/08/2023 23:29

I'm a huge steam train fan.

Is he a big reader? I like the Robert Colbeck Railway Detective novels. I also love a vintage poster or sign. I have a couple of metal toilet related ones in my bathrooms and lots of framed posters of places I love but steam train specific.

I also have a model railway. Does he have room for one? You could get a starter set.

StrawberryPi · 24/08/2023 23:44

You can get socks, cushions, bags etc with the pattern of the seat fabric from various train lines! Look at the transport museum website - my colleague recently got very excited when they brought out the Elizabeth line ones!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 25/08/2023 14:51

My Dad is a train enthusiast and we've bought him many train-related gifts over the years.

He has a huge model railway which is his pride and joy and adding to it is an easy option for a gift.

Steam train driver experience or special journey.

He also loves vintage posters of trains, traditional railway station signs, particularly of meaningful places.

We bought him a beautiful train station-style clock.

A train driver hat and whistle.

Ticket to ride board game!

Tiespin · 25/08/2023 15:08

I love trains. I'd love a miniature train set in a suitcase. Several companies make them

Whatsthepoint1234 · 25/08/2023 22:06

I am in possession of a train obsessed dh! Previous gifts include:
Steam train driving experience (I got his at the East Anglian Railway Museum in Colchester but I’m sure there are others!)
Ive got this 3d train puzzle for his stocking https://www.menkind.co.uk/flying-scotsman-3d-puzzle?sku=77796&utmcampaign=PMax_UK_Low_TROAS_2022&gbraid=0AAAAAD45wmHhAwygDo_3I_Ths7XyxnwhM&gclid=CjwKCAjwoqGnBhAcEiwAwK-OkQzklTX-LF-_sVg4DBLihr2Ie3kAeOSmVKZB9W6guPpMRLsSL5vD3xoCWSwQAvD_BwE

Muchtoomuchtodo · 25/08/2023 22:15

We got DH a footplate experience for his 40th. They vary hugely in price depending on the length of the railway so look around.

reluctantbrit · 25/08/2023 22:54

Depends. DH is one but more in building his model railway than taking a trip. He is not against the odd steam train journey but for him that wouldn't be a big thing, we haven't been on one for ages. Same with larger luxury train journeys, he wouldn't see it as something special.

For him, I ask for detailed items. Some years he gets a model, in others he gets lots of small bits relating to his set up. He is currently tearing the whole thing apart and it will be fully rebuilt next year in a differnent room, so I expect a wishlist of cables and connectors, not model locomotives this year.

There is the odd calendar or poster maybe but only as an extra and never expensive.
