How long does your Christmas last?

I know, it’s August, but inspired by another thread!

Just wondering when your Christmas celebrations start and end?

I realise it will depend on annual leave and many people work over Christmas - if so, do you ever celebrate on a different days instead?

For our family, it starts at 5pm on Christmas eve, and finishes on the 28th, when the family visits stop.

I do usually take annual leave until January and the tree comes down on the 6th, but I count 29th - 6th as post-Christmas period.

I prefer the build up to the actual day. Christmas feels over for me by boxing day night.

I'm the same, I'm always a bit disappointed by the actual day itself and our tree comes down on Boxing Day, but I love the build up!

Rainbow74y4 · 18/08/2023 19:11

For us i'd say from Christmas Eve till New Years

fireflyloo · 18/08/2023 19:19

Ours starts when we put tree up the first weekend of December. Ends on the 28th December when we clear away the decorations and clean before heading off for a new years trip.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/08/2023 19:23

From the minute the schools break up til 4th January - I take the full 2.5 weeks off

And I use a days annual leave to put the decorations up at the beginning of December as I love doing it

LaurieFairyCake · 18/08/2023 19:23

And it's the longest break I take in the year as I'm not allowed longer than a week off during the year apart from Christmas

Ladymama12 · 18/08/2023 20:33

For me it starts December till kids go back to school then that's the day the Dec's come down. I never want it to end

lastseasonstop · 18/08/2023 22:16

1st December until 27th December. House back to normal on 27th.

Mindovermatter247 · 18/08/2023 23:12

Technically for us it starts on dec 1st when advents get opened, I also do a Christmas movie advent aswell. we do several activities, markets, lights etc in the run up… I think when the kids have finished school for Christmas is where it starts to get the most exciting. This year they break up 4 days before so a bit later than usual.

Mindovermatter247 · 18/08/2023 23:13

We usually leave decs up until 6th, only because DS birthday is the 5th and he loves the lights.

Mistressofnone · 18/08/2023 23:39

I love how different the answers to the thread became once it got moved over to the Christmas section 😄 Ours lasts from the start of December til back to school too. I revel in those days between Christmas and New Year when you don't know what day of the week it is. Miss all the Festive ads when it all becomes about Jet2 holidays. Love Big Fat Quiz. Dislike that retail is open on Boxing Day. It used to be an extension of Christmas Day with silent high streets and family gatherings or walks.

FaeWings · 18/08/2023 23:46

Starts 1st December for me and finishes on 31st December. I do love Christmas, the trees, lights, food, excitement. But because of my faith its the message of hope and love that gets me each year. I love taking this time to remember, reflect and to be thankful. I think Advent is a beautiful thing.

I love New Year's Day as a fresh start, taking down the decorations, going for a walk and making plans and goals... setting up a new journal.

Absolutelynotfornow · 18/08/2023 23:50

After grandchild birthday so mid December for Decs . I am a nurse so actual celebration fit in with my rosta !

ChristmasCwtch · 19/08/2023 01:21

I decorate for Christmas around 20th November. Then post all cards by end November and wrap presents before 1st December.

And then I can fully enjoy December. I still potter around the shops and love the feel of decorations, Christmas music, hustle and bustle.

Adore Christmas Eve. I find Christmas Day evening quite depressing though and have no interest in new year celebrations.

YuliaJollyberry · 19/08/2023 02:31

Starts about 4pm Christmas Eve for me. I like to have things done by then and be back at home.
Preparations really get going from the beginning of December with the house gradually trimmed and anticipation building outings/events attended.
Christmas finishes on twelfth night when the trees comes down. The mantle garlands entwined with fairy lights are left up until Candlemas.

CheetosCheerios · 19/08/2023 03:02

Starts in December. That’s when I get done festive cheer. Celebrations proper start when I finish work, usually around 21st/22nd December, and end on NYE.

CheetosCheerios · 19/08/2023 03:03

Done = some!

PurpleWhirple · 19/08/2023 06:01

I have in-laws come to stay every single year. Whenever they sod off home on the 27th or 28th that's when my break starts and I feel I can actually relax. I'm always a bit sad that they're here for the main bits, I'd love not to have to host them and be able to enjoy my Christmas.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 19/08/2023 06:20

It starts on Christmas Eve with the tree being decorated and the shopping done. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are family days, one for each side, and that’s it, all over. Tree down on January 2nd if we are there, otherwise before we go away.
We have our own business and take Christmas as our annual holiday and close from Christmas Eve until the New Year, often going away for a few days.

Spendonsend · 19/08/2023 06:22

It starts in about sept with people arguing about who visits who and the sulking ends in March.

MinnieMountain · 19/08/2023 07:04

Once DS breaks up from school until 28th December.
DH and I have compulsory time off work for different reasons. We’re off until 2nd January but it doesn’t feel Christmassy the whole time.

RuthW · 19/08/2023 07:09

Starts when I finish work which is sometimes 7pm Christmas eve. Finishes when I do back to work which is sometimes 7.30 am on 27th depending on bank hols.

orangeclubsarebest · 19/08/2023 07:33

I finish the same time as the children as I work in a preschool. We usually try and do a visit to Santa or the theatre.

Christmas Eve is when the real celebrations start. We bake cookies for Santa. We go to the christingle service at the church with my grandma. Watch a Christmas movie.

Christmas Day we have family over.

Boxing Day we see my dad's family.

27th we see my mum's family. And that's usually the last thing.

Tiddlywinks63 · 19/08/2023 07:36

48 hours max. Christmas Eve to Boxing Day 😁

Londonnight · 19/08/2023 07:43

I'll be working Christmas day and Boxing day, so our Christmas will be 24 December.

topnoddy · 19/08/2023 07:51

Just the day , not at all if i could get away with it .

It's just over hyped for weeks on end !
