Christmas Day Menu

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 05/08/2023 17:56

I usually go to my mum's for the day, where we have prawn cocktail/Turkey/pudding but I want to make the day my own, not recreate hers.

So, what's your menu on Christmas Day? I'm looking for inspiration (especially starters).

Thank you.

We have honeydew melon for starter reminds me of my 80's childhood.

hby9628 · 05/08/2023 22:33

No starters here.
We didn't have turkey last year as we were underwhelmed previously. We will probs get
Gammon
Beef
Roasties & mash
Carrots
Brocolli
Peas
Parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Yorkshire's
Pigs in blankets.
Always get something chocolate for pudding & an Xmas pudding type option too
Lots of Prosecco.
Yum. Roll on December

FirstDayOfHoliyays · 05/08/2023 22:36

"They probably don't deliver Christmas Day
We go to an Indian restaurant on Christmas Day who usually do takeaway but they stop it for that night"

Nobody's eating at night though on Christmas Day.

Hawkins009 · 05/08/2023 22:37

Ours is usually a glorified Sunday roast dinner but with turkey instead.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 05/08/2023 22:41

We could not do Christmas dinner without a starter but that’s just us! You do what you feel is right for you. We tend to have prawn cocktail/ pate / soup for starter depending on individual preference then turkey and beef with all of the trimmings and then Christmas pudding/sponge pudding (again depending on individual preference) but this is usually served two to three hours later when we’ve recovered from the main meal lol! Love Christmas dinner ❤️

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/08/2023 22:48

We don't do starter either amd after years of no-one eating it m don't do pudding ,

On the years when there was DH,me,DS,DD, Mum,Dad,Bro,SIL , I would do a proper cooked breakfast to keep everyone going then Christmas Dinner (chicken with bacon on it rather than turkey) and choice of puddings (Christmas Pudding, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Apple Pie/Crumble )

When there is DH.DS.DS,me :
Only DS eats meat so I do chicken breast , roasted just plain, the cats have a share
We have a Quorn Roast or nut roast (made ahead and frozen)
roast potatoes
carrots
sprouts
sage&onion stuffing
cauliflower cheese
chestnuts
pureed swede
red cabbage
bread sauce
roast parsnips
new potatoes
gravy
yorkshire puddings

We eat after dark , table set
I like to know what I'm having on the day , I can do most of the prep the day before and work out my oven timings .

The other days are time for trying different things ,
I would never eat curry for Christmas Dinner personally

Nottogetapenny · 05/08/2023 22:56

No starters here! We have a selection of bite size canapés with Champagne for the adults and Champomy (fizzy apple juice) which we buy in France for the children.

We have this about 1 hour before we have roast goose and all the normal trimmings that go with the Christmas meal

We then have Christmas pudding and another dessert for anyone who doesn’t like Christmas pudding

Mindovermatter247 · 05/08/2023 23:01

Half of us have prawn cocktail and half pate

usually we have
honey roast gammon
chicken
a lot of veg and potatoes
yorkies

for dessert some have Christmas pudding and the rest of us usually have a gateau 😊

mumda · 05/08/2023 23:01

turkey. with pigs in blankets. yorkshire pudding if I'm in the mood. Lots of roast potatoes, parsnips, vegetables including sprouts, mulled cabbage. Gravy. Lashings o it.
Pudding: cake, mince pies, chocolate.

Crackers and hats are a must but it kills me the waste they produce.

If your so worried it’s august why are you reading a thread in the Christmas section 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think WizzBang is secretly excited about Christmas and "accidentally" found themselves on the Christmas board. 😉

ThePersistenceOfMammories · 05/08/2023 23:22

I wasn’t really thinking about Christmas until I saw this thread. Now I want to put my tree up 😅

FirstDayOfHoliyays · 06/08/2023 08:37

"It’s august"

What a clever girl, you've learned your months I see 🤩 @Wizzbangfizz

It’s august

It’s in the Christmas topic board.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 06/08/2023 11:56

Thank you so much, everyone. This thread has warmed my heart.

I will probably start a new one closer to the time for tips on things I can make beforehand so I don't spend the day in the kitchen.

I know it's basically a fancy roast but I rarely eat them so I'm a roast novice (if lasagne was the traditional Christmas meal I'd kick ass!)

I love the idea of reheating a takeaway. Maybe when it's just my immediate family I'll try that.

It’s august

That is correct. It is also correct to note that this is a thread about Christmas.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 06/08/2023 12:42

My family would rebel if I did anything other than my traditional menu! Even my daughter does it when she hosts Christmas dinner. Starters are: leek and potato soup, paté or prawn cocktail. Main course is turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, chipolata sausages, stuffing, bacon, Brussel sprouts, carrots, parsnips, cranberry relish, bread sauce and gravy. Desserts are: trifle, Christmas pudding, profiteroles and cheesecake.

Ok, I am widely known as the queen of Christmas by my friends hahaha, and like you 15 years ago I set out to make my own traditions for my own family.

for me there is no greater celebration meal than the beef Wellington, I serve that with all the usual trimmings. A beautiful table set with nuts and fruit, scratch cards and cocktails.

no starter, no need for us, and pudding comes out a good couple of hours after dinner when having a break from the board games, usually a cheese board, fruit and whatever seems good in the lead up it changes cheesecake, chocolate cakes etc etc

here is my beef welly from 2022, I’m already excited for this year!

Love the fruit. It looks beautiful.

To be honest, all of your Christmases sound so lovely that I'm tempted to say "fuck my family", and invite myself to one of yours instead!

I'll bring an embarrassing amount of alcohol and chocolate.

Ineedwinenow · 06/08/2023 14:15

Another no starter here! We are having bacon cobs in the morning and steak, chips with a Stilton sauce for lunch and Xmas pudding.. make your own traditions with food you genuinely love!

Babdoc · 06/08/2023 14:28

In my house, we start with croissants and Buck’s Fizz for breakfast. Nibbles of chocolate pennies while opening presents.
Big buffet lunch of fancy charcuterie, cheeses, salads, canapés, fruit etc.
We then all help stuff the turkey with spiced chestnut/apricot and plum/ginger/clove stuffings. Wrap it in streaky bacon that’s been soaking in whisky for two days.
Turkey into a low oven, then we all go out up the hills to walk round the loch while it cooks.
Back home, put the potatoes on to roast, turn up the turkey and unwrap it to crisp the skin. Reheat the (prepared ahead and frozen)red cabbage/apple/onion in red wine with clove, cinnamon, a little Muscovado sugar and a tablespoon of cider vinegar.
Carve, make gravy from the roast drippings, serve up with several glasses of good wine, Christmas crackers, candles and silly hats. I usually decorate the table with whatever is available in my garden - viburnum flowers, winter jasmine, hellebores, holly, ivy and a few late roses.
None of us like Christmas pudding, so I serve my home made chocolate chestnut log, iced with melted Nutella and decorated with a sprinkle of icing sugar “snow” and a sprig of holly from the garden.
Anyone still peckish after that lot gets baklava, grapes, dates and cheeses to pick at before bed!

Stompythedinosaur · 06/08/2023 15:52

We've generally had baked camembert for a starter, but I'm hoping to have something cold and premade this year as it is a stress when there are other things that need to be in the oven. Thinking maybe some appetisers (we are a tricky family to feed as lots of dietary restrictions), maybe smoked salmon pinwheels, bruschetta and something else.

Our main course is down to a fine art - rib of beef (plus a small turkey or chicken if my brother is coming who doesn't eat beef), a roast veg, mozzarella and pecan strudel for the vegetarians (can be made ahead), then pigs in blankets, buttered cabbage, roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, parsnips with a maple and mustard glaze, carrots roasted with garlic, brussel sprouts (must be steamed, not boiled).

I buy a pudding, usually profiteroles.

RinklyRomaine · 06/08/2023 17:52

I love these threads. Even if it is august!

We tend to have an antipasti plate of sorts from about 12 - Italian charcuterie, pate, gherkins olives and breads. Just to pick at as family arrive and with bubbles. Then the main event 3/4, turkey, made ahead gravy and pulled gammon, all the standard trimmings plus a cauli cheese. Shit instant gravy for DH 🙄

Dessert at dinner time - usually a trifle and something bought. Turkey pickings at bedtime if you fancy. I have varied the menu in previous years but no one really likes it. I love to cook, do most of it the day before and have an enormous oven so it's fairly simple. Fancy sit down starters are too much hard work though.

Love this thread! I find it really interesting how others celebrate Christmas Day.
Very similar to a few others, I’ll either serve canapés or have a grazing board ready for my parents arriving, which we have with drinks during the present opening. We’ll sit down at the table for the main course and pudding a couple of hours later.
