Record player for dd

This is probably going to be on dd's wish list. I haven't ever owned one and would be grateful for some recommendations. Also is a record player the same as a turn table?

It's April...

A record player is not the same as a turntable. The turntable is just the rotating bit that the vinyl record lies on. You also need an amplifier and speakers. The whole lot together comprises a record player. If it also has a facility to play cds, cassettes and radio, then it’s called a music centre or music system.

You could pick up a basic record player from Argos for £20 a couple of years ago, but they seem to have vanished and all look a bit more high tec now. There’s still lots in Argos though to give you an idea of the basic ones and the differences.

What does she want it for? Is it just to play vinyl? Or does she want to try her hand at DJing?

OttisSuit · 28/04/2023 13:56

Thank you, Argos is a good idea. Just playing vinyl, not DJing.

Also does it make a difference if the speakers are 'analogue' the usual old fashioned ones or if it play over bluetooth. I'd have thought that you lose the special vinyl playing quality of listening over BT? Are 'Jam' ones any good, they' are about £80.00.

I have one from Amazon its 1byOne and its brilliant and quite cheap if you're on a budget. Avoid Crossley as they are not good!

You can pick up record players that connect to bluetooth speakers/headphones on amazon for under £50. I like the look of the ones that look like little suitcases.

Tbh, I don't think quality matters. I work for a label and some music fans go mad for 'vinyl' as they call it so it has become more of a status thing.

I got one last year from Amazon and was about £50. It works great so I'd take a look there

febrezeme · 30/04/2023 09:48

My primary ager asked for one last year - I got her a Crosley one as it's a bit more decorative and a bit of fun really. Don't expect it to last more than a year or two but didn't want to invest in a more expensive/professional one if it was a bit of a fad interest

I have a Sony record player, which was about £250 (was a 50th birthday present from my kids) which has Bluetooth but tbh it had problems connecting so we have hardwired it to our sound system.

If you have a Richer Sounds near you, pop in and ask for some advice. They are really good at this kind of stuff.

DH has a Pro-ject turntable, it’s (apparently) a very good make.

@OttisSuit Is she after a HiFi turntable? If so, I can recommend Pro-Ject, they make excellent turntables. I have a Debut III, which is several years old now. It's fitted with an Ortofon OM-10 cartridge. It needs a little setting up, but once this is done, it will delight your ears!
