We got our DM a personalised planter for the garden and some flowers that one back every year

Take her out somewhere, a musical, nice lunch in an RHS garden, weekend away. All three in one weekend.

Is she mobile? You say she loves travelling but is she agile whilst travelling? An RHS membership maybe or a National Trust membership?

An Audible membership?

A dwarf patio apple/pear/plum/cherry tree that could be planted in a nice pot?

A subscription to an indoor or outdoor plant company? So you'd get a nice plant each month . These subscriptions can be for six months or three months if they're a bit pricey.

Travel skin care / makeup kits
Nice toiletry bagfor travelling
Custom photo calendar with pictures of places she's been to or wants to visit
Good headphones if she uses them
Could be something to do with family pictures, maybe a photobook of all the photos you have as of now and of previous generations. There are programs like Photoglory or Photoworks that let you repair old photos if necessary, and you can compose them into an album. We did it for my grandmother, she loved it.
Tickets to shows/opera she would enjoy
Accessories or toys for her dog (not a dog person , so don't know much about it, sorry!)
SPA or nail salon certificate if she likes that
A birthday video would be a nice adding instead of a regular card.

We do engraved crystal paperweights for important occasions. Like here: www.trophystore.co.uk/clarity-diamond-paperweight-award-silver-6-5cm
Other suppliers do large numbers with text around them eg Mary 80 1.3.23

I’m going to be that person and say while we can all suggest a bunch of stuff you can get her, most older people generally don’t actually like getting stuff. It stresses them out.

Things that my elderly mum actually likes getting are lunch out, bunch of seasonal flowers, nice jigsaw. That’s about it! She does love a nice birthday card though.

An experience. Or else nice PJs or a plant. Something that is a treat

SpookyBlackCat · 01/03/2023 06:00

Also, maybe just ask her if there is anything she wants. If she says don’t get her anything, maybe respect that and take her out for a nice lunch or something like that.

Day trip on the Flying Scotsman or similar steam train? It's pricey but a unique experience.

How about some really lovely fingerless gloves?
There are some gorgeous ones on Amazon and Etsy that are in different colours that have flowers or leaves or animals on them. They’re easier to get on and off than proper gloves and they’re great to shove in a handbag. I don’t know if she has arthritis, but I’m 50 and I do, so I have heaps in different colours to go with different outfits.Example Blue Pansies Mitts
Bird mitts

I would take her out for lunch and to a nearby RHS garden.

Not sure where you are but Harrogate has RHS Harlow Carr and there's a Betty's which would be perfect. Unless you're not nearby!

DM was 80 a few weeks ago. She is actually trying to get rid of her life long accumulations of "stuff". We did take her to Betty's for afternoon tea though, and she loved the whole experience.

You can't book afternoon tea at Harlow Carr, and as it was early Jan we didn't want to risk a long queue in freezing rain. We did book for Harrogate town centre Betty's and walked straight in at our time. It was wonderful. We'll go back up Harlow Carr for the gardens in the spring.

DM's priorities are now very much about spending good times with friends and family.
